Warning:Always keep the firearm unloaded until you areready to shoot. When the firearm is loaded donot touch the trigger unless you intend to fire!

Warning:If the KAHR Pistol appears to be operatingimproperly for any reason, danger of an unin-tentional discharge exists. The firearm mustbe immediately unloaded and not used until itis repaired. Make sure that the pistol is prop-erly repaired and checked by KAHR ARMS or

an authorized gunsmith before using it again.

    How the Kahr Pistol Functions

FOR TESTING FUNCTION, ALWAYS USE ANUNLOADED PISTOL WITH AN EMPTYCHAMBER AND WITHOUT THE MAGAZINEINSERTED. (as described immediately below)

    1. Without placing finger on the trigger, removethe magazine. Make sure that there is no roundin the chamber by pulling the slide fully to therear and carefully checking that the chamberand bore are empty. The pistol is now unloadedwith the magazine out.

    2. Keeping finger off the trigger, cock pistol bypulling slide fully to its rearmost position andletting it run forward. The pistol is now partially

cocked, i.e. the striker spring is partially ten-sioned. The trigger is fully forward.

The following describes the functioning ofKAHR Pistol when it is loaded and fires.

As the trigger is pulled (pressed to the rear), theinternal passive striker block is released, i.e. aprotrusion on the cocking cam lifts the strikerblock so that it no longer blocks the striker from

moving forward past the breech face to fire achambered round. Simultaneously with thisaction, the cocking cam pulls the striker backfrom partially tensioned to a fully cocked posi-tion under full spring tension. Completing therearward pull of the Trigger allows the Cockingcam to release the Striker. With the Striker Blocklifted, the Striker is free to move fully forward tocontact and fire the cartridge.

The recoil impulse of the fired cartridge movesthe Barrel and Slide backwards. After approxi-mately 1/2 in. of movement to the rear, the cam-ming action of the recoil lug of the Barrel andthe Slide Stop/Locking Pin in the frame pulls therear of the barrel down to unlock it from theSlide. Unlocked, the Slide continues fully to the

rear of its travel. During this rearward travel, thecartridge is pulled out of the chamber by theextractor and is then thrown out to the right bythe ejector.

A ramp in the slide rails disengages the TriggerBar from the Cocking Cam. This allows theCocking Cam to reset itself and reactivates theStriker Block.

The Recoil Spring begins to move the Slide for-ward toward its original locked position.

    As the Slide moves forward:

    1. a loaded round is pushed out of the magazineinto the chamber;

    2. the Striker is caught and put under partial ten-sion by the Cocking Cam, and

    3. the Barrel is pushed forward and upward, locking it with the slide.

CAUTION: THE PISTOL WILL NOW FIRE IF THETRIGGER IS PULLED.

After the last round has been fired and ejected, the slide is held open by the Slide Stop Lever.

    Important Safety Information

    14

  • 8/13/2019 Kahr Manual

    15/28

Safety Rules:1. Always handle any firearm as if it were loadedto avoid unintended discharges.

    2. Never point any firearm at anything you do notintend to shoot.

    3. Never take anyone's word that any firearm isunloaded. Check for your-self, with fingers offthe trigger, and the firearm pointed in a safedirection.

    4. Always be sure barrel and action are clear ofobstructions. First remove the magazine andunload the pistol, then clear obstructions imme-diately so that firearm will function correctly andsafely.

    5. Never squeeze the trigger or put your finger in

the trigger guard until you are aiming at the tar-get you intend to shoot.

NOTE REGARDING SLIDE RELEASE OPERA-TION: When the slide is held open on an emptymagazine, the slide release is very hard todepress. This warns the shooter that the maga-zine is empty.

To easily release the slide, either remove the

empty magazine or replace it with a loaded mag-azine. Depressing the slide release will then bemuch easier.

    STRIKER BLOCK:

In the partially-cocked position, a spring-loadedStriker Block projects into a recess in the Striker, preventing it from moving forward. The strikerblock is only released when the trigger is fully

pulled to the rear.SAFETY FUNCTION OF THE COCKING CAMDESIGN AND POSITION:

The forward movement of the Striker is blocked bythe Cocking Cam. Due to the design and position-ing of the Cocking Cam, there is no way for theStriker to move forward past the Cocking Camunder normal use unless the Trigger is pulled.

    Sights & Sight Adjustment

These consist of a rear sight which has a whitebar insert under the sighting notch and a frontsight which has a white dot insert.

Windage adjustments are normally made withthe Rear Sight Only.

    Important Safety Information

    15

Both the front and rear sights are held in placeby the tight fit of the sight to the dovetail. On theCW and CM Series the polymer front sight ispinned into the slide and cannot be moved.Windage (side to side) adjustments are made bypressing the rear sight in the direction that youwant the bullet placement to move. For example,

if the pistol groups to the left of your aimingpoint, move the rear sight to the right. This willmove the bullet placement to the right.

Note: Sight adjustments should be made with asight adjustment tool that is designed to movethe sight without damaging the slide, dovetailcut or the sight itself. When pressing the sightsto make an adjustment, use a non-marringmaterial against the sight and the slide to avoid

    damage.

    7. Never shoot at a hard surface, such as a rock,or a liquid surface, such as water. A bullet mayricochet and travel in any direction to strike youor an object that you cannot see.

    8. Always be sure your backstop is adequate tostop and contain bullets before shooting so thatyou do not hit anything outside the range area.

    9. Always be sure of your target and the areabehind it before you shoot. A bullet can travelthrough or past your target up to 1 mile. If in

    doubt, do not shoot.

The magazine is filled by pushing individualrounds into the magazine. Rounds are pushed, base first, into the front of the magazine. Firstpress the round down to overcome the pressureof the magazine spring, then push the partiallyinserted round fully to the rear.

Note: be sure that all rounds are pressed fully tothe back of the Magazine.

Insert the magazine into the magazine well at thebase of the grip until the magazine catchengages fully.

Pull the slide fully to the rear and lock it backusing the Slide Stop. Next push down on theSlide Stop to chamber the first round into the

barrel. Do not chamber a round by pulling backon the slide and letting go of the slide. This maycause the slide to not go fully into battery.

The trigger finger must remain outside the trig-ger guard until the target has been identified andyou intend to shoot.

    Reassembly (K Series)

First, assemble the slide components reversing

the order in which they were dismantled. Then, before installing the Slide onto the Frame, do thefollowing:

    15. Failure to fire:Keep the firearm pointed toward the target andwait 30 seconds after if fails to fire. If a hangfire(slow ignition) has occurred, round should firewithin 30 seconds. If round does not fire, remove the magazine, eject the round and checkfor an obstruction. Then, examine the primer. Iffiring pin indent on primer is light, off center, ornonexistent, have the firearm examined by acompetent gunsmith. If the firing pin indent on

primer appears normal (like similar previouslyfired rounds) the ammunition may be at fault.

Segregate misfired round from other live ammu-nition and empty cases, and continue firing.

Note: Dispose of misfired round in accordance

with ammunition manufacturer's instructions.16. Never discharge a firearm near an animalunless it is trained to accept the noise. A startledanimal could injure itself or cause an accident.

    Dismantling (K Series)

The KAHR Pistol is dismantled to its main com-ponents in the following steps:

    1. Remove the magazine and visually check to besure that the chamber is empty by pulling backthe slide. (photo #1 and photo #2 on page 16.)

    18. When preparing to fire, be sure that the area behindthe slide is free of obstructions (watch your thumb) asthe slide will move back sharply upon firing.

    19. Never drink alcoholic beverages or takedrugs before or during shooting as your visionand judgment can be seriously impaired, makingyour gun handling unsafe.

    20. Always seek a doctors advice if you are tak-ing medication to be sure you are fit to shootand handle a firearm safely.

    21. Always wear ear protection when shooting, especially on a range. Without ear protection, the noise of firing can lead to cumulative long-

    term and permanent hearing loss.

Make sure that the Recoil Guide Rod and Springare parallel to the slide rails and not off to oneside.

Note: Be sure that the smaller diameter closedend of the Recoil Spring is against the flange onthe rear of the Recoil Spring Guide. (see photo#6a)

    Magazine Disassembly,Maintenance & Reassembly

    Disassembly

Ensure that the Magazine is unloaded. Insert a1/8 or smaller pin (or length of stiff wire, etc.)through the bottom sight holes in the MagazineTube (A), between coils of the Magazine Spring(D). This will contain most of the spring tensionduring disassembly. Using a small punch (or

ball-point pen or similar expedient), depress thelocking stud of the Magazine Base Lock (B)through the hole in the bottom of the MagazineBase (C) (see photo #12).

Push the Magazine Base forward off theMagazine Tube. The pin previously inserted inthe bottom sight holes of the Magazine Tubenow contains the Magazine Spring under some

compression. Point the bottom of the MagazineTube in a safe direction, contain the Springs freeend protruding from the bottom with yourthumb, and carefully withdraw the pin from theMagazine sight holes.

CAUTION! THE MAGAZINE SPRING IS UNDERPRESSURE. Be sure to contain the Spring whenwithdrawing the pin to prevent damage and/orinjury. Eye protector should be worn.

Remove the Magazine Spring and MagazineFollower (E) through the bottom of the MagazineTube.

    Photo 12

Now, carefully insert the Slide Stop at the 4:00o'clock position approx. half way through theframe opening and the kidney shaped cutout in

the barrel lug (see photo #10). At this pointadjust the Slide Stop to the 3:00 o'clock positionto allow the slide stop spring to catch the top ofthe landing on the slide stop. Make sure the slidestop does not miss the kidney shaped cutout asthis will result in the gun being returned to thefactory for service.

CAUTION: Keep the slide stop in the 3:00 o'clockposition to allow the slide stop spring to catchthe top of the landing on the slide stop.

Finally, draw the slide back 1/4 of an inch con-

firming the slide stop lines up with the half-moon cutout in the slide. Next, gently push theslide stop the rest of the way into the frameopening until it stops (see photo #11).

The Magazine is now completely disassembled(see photo #13). Clean all parts thoroughly withsolvent. Wipe all parts lightly with lubricant-moistened cloth before reassembly.

    CAUTION! DO NOT OVER LUBRICATE.

Lubricant can penetrate the primer of ammunition

and render it inoperative causing a failure to fire.Inspect the Magazine Base and Magazine BaseLock for cracks. Inspect the Magazine Tube forcracks or voids in the seam weld area.Inspect Magazine Follower for chips and cracks.Check the metal follower pin in the MagazineFollower for correct depth and tightness of fit(see photo #13). Ensure that the MagazineFollower moves freely inside the Magazine Tube.

Replace components as required.Check the Magazine feed lips for distortion, burrs or nicks, and especially for smoothness atthe magazine catch slot.

Note: Magazines should always be handled withcare. If a Magazine becomes damaged as aresult of being dropped on a hard surface, itshould be replaced. Do not attempt to repair it.

    Reassembly

After cleaning, inspection and lubrication, reassemble the Magazine in reverse order fromdisassembly, again using a pin or wire throughthe lowest sight holes to contain the MagazineSpring for ease of fitting the Magazine BaseLock and Magazine Base.

Ensure the empty, reassembled Magazine seatsfully when inserted in the pistol, and ejectsfreely from its well when the Magazine Catch isdepressed.

    Checking Safety Devices

The following safety check is to be carried out atregular intervals and before the pistol is used:

With the Slide removed and the Barrel disman-tled, the Striker is drawn back manually about1/4 inch and then eased forward again. The tip

of the Striker must not project beyond thebreech face of the Slide.

Note: When easing the Striker forward, be care-ful not to depress the Striker Block which sitsnext to the Striker. If it is depressed during thesafety check, it will allow the Striker to projectbeyond the breech face.

Note Regarding Primer Indent and DistortedSpent Cases

Upon examining fired cases, youmay notice that the primer indentappears distorted or elongated. This is normal for the striker sys-tem design of the KAHR pistols. You may alsonotice that the spent case becomes slightlydeformed into the shape of a "D" instead of an"O" shape. This is considered normal for theKAHR pistol and is caused by the spent casetouching the bottom of the ejection port when

exiting the gun. Neither of these two situationsare a cause for concern and it is not necessaryto contact the service department.

Extractor as a Loaded ChamberIndicator (except P380)

The extractor on all Kahr pistols protrudes out-ward from the surface of the slide when the

properly designated caliber ammunition markedon the barrel is loaded in the chamber. Theextractor is located on the right side of the slide

Cleaning & LubricationBefore the initial shooting of the new KAHRPistol, the pistol should be disassembled fol-lowing the instructions in this manual andcleaned with a commercial gun cleaning solvent. After each shooting session, the cleaningprocess should be repeated to remove firingresidue from the inside and outside of theBarrel, Slide, Frame and Magazine.

Once cleaned, all parts should be lightly lubricat-ed with a commercial gun lubricant. Follow sol-vent and lubricant manufacturers instructions.

    24

directly behind the ejection port (see photo#14). The extractor protrusion allows the extrac-tor to be used as a loaded chamber indicator(LCI). The extractor protrusion permits visualand tactile (felt) confirmation of a chamberedround.

    SAFETY WARNING

The loaded chamber indicatorshould never be used as an

unloaded chamber indicator -meaning that it should never be

used by a firearm handler to confirm that achamber is empty, to the exclusion of manuallychecking the chamber as explained on page 17in the Unloading section of this manual. Theuser must know that the surest method to deter-mine the absence of a round in the chamber isto visually and manually check the chamber of

the firearm by pulling and locking the slide tothe rear.

Kahr External Safety & LoadedChamber Indicator (LCI) Model

    Loaded Chamber Indicator

This model is designed to provide physical indicationif there is a bullet loaded in the chamber. The productis designed with a lever mounted on the top of slide.

The lever is marked as Indicator in red lettering. Whena bullet is chambered it pushes the lever upward andout of position. The operator will visually see the lever

    Photo 14

as it is raised up. Also the operator will be able to feelthe indicator as being out of its normal resting positionas it will not be flush with the top of the slide, thuswarning the operator that the firearm is loaded.

    External Safety

This model has, in addition to the internal safety, an

external safety that will prevent the firearm from firingwhen the safety is in safe position. The product has anexternal lever with two settings. When the lever ispushed completely up and the red dot is fully visible, the firearm is in the armed position and ready to firewith the pull of the trigger. When the lever is pusheddown, and the red dot is hidden the firearm is in safeposition and will not function with the pull of the trig-ger. The safety works in the following manner. When

the lever is in down (Safe) position the connecting camon the lever pushes the trigger bar out of position, dis-connecting it from the cocking cam. If the trigger ispulled in safe mode, the cocking cam will not releasethe striker and the firearm will not fire. When the leveris pushed up (Fire/armed position) the cam moves outof place and the trigger bar moves up, again connect-ing with the cocking cam. The firearm is then ready tofire with the pull of the trigger.

The handgun should be kept clean and properlylubricated at all times. Lubricants can evaporateover time. Therefore, lightly lubricate the hand-gun once a month whether or not it has beenfired. Be sure your handgun is FULLYUNLOADED (Magazine removed and chamberempty) before performing any cleaning or main-

    tenance.Note Regarding Lead Bullets:

Lead (unjacketed) bullets can cause excessivebore fouling. We do not recommend lead bulletsin Kahr pistols with polygonal rifling.

    Notes on Reliability

If this firearm is to be used in lawful self-defense, the user must understand that overallreliability is based upon the interaction of fourfactors: handgun, magazine, ammunition anduser.

A handgun is only a mechanical device. It canfail to function properly despite the use of thefinest materials and the greatest possible care inits design and manufacture. To ensure the high-

est level of reliability, we suggest that youadhere to the following guidelines:

    1. Obtain the guidance of a qualified or accredit-ed firearms instructor before using the handgun.

    2. Use only the highest quality factory ammuni-tion. Avoid reloads, surplus and budget pricedammunition as well as any ammunitiondesigned by its manufacturer for use in carbinesor other shoulder-fired firearms. At times, a par-

ticular model of handgun will not reliably func-tion with a specific brand or loading of ammuni-tion. Selected ammunition should be test fired(100 rounds minimum) to ensure reliability. Also, ammunition manufacturers can makechanges to their ammunition such as substitut-ing a different powder or primer. Consequently, ammunition which proved reliable in the pastmay suddenly begin to cause malfunctions.

Inspect all ammunition for visible defects beforeloading it into the Magazine.

    25

    3. Use only KAHR ARMS manufacturedMagazines. Consider purchasing extraMagazines so that they may periodically berotated, allowing the Magazine Spring to relax. When inserting a Magazine into the handgun, listen for it to click into place, then pull down onthe Magazine Base to make sure that it is seated

and locked.4. Improper shooting technique and grip cancause a variety of malfunctions such as a failureto properly eject or feed. Also, some loadings ofammunition are more sensitive to impropershooting technique or grip than others. Maintaina firm but comfortable grip on the handgun. Theshooting arm should supply resistance to thehandgun rather than serving as a shock

    absorber.

    Warranty & Liability Exclusions

Not withstanding the provisions contained inany other printed Warranty statement(s) madeby KAHR ARMS or by one of KAHR ARMS affil-iates, the following exclusions from Warranty, among others, shall apply:

    1. If the pistol is dismantled by the purchaser or

by third parties further than described in thismanual, and if, as a result of inappropriate han-dling or incomplete reassembly, damage or mal-functions are caused, as a result of which thesafety devices are rendered ineffective, then thepurchaser shall forfeit any claim to guaranteeagainst damages thereby incurred to persons orproperty.

    2. Any change to the basic construction of the

weapon, in particular by the circumvention ofthe safety devices, is strictly prohibited for safe-ty reasons, and precludes the use of theweapon.

    3. No liability whatsoever can be accepted in thecase of criminal misuse, negligence, resale, useunder the influence of drugs or alcohol, modifi-cations, careless handling, etc.

    4. With the Slide removed, it is not permitted totension and release the Striker forward sincethis could damage the Striker Block.
