Alice Lynch

The staff and management would like to wish all parents and students of St. Kilian’s/Eurocampus peace and joy for Christmas and a Happy New Year. I would like to thank the students, parents and staff who have organised and supported charity events in the lead up to Christmas. As always the St. Kilian’s community has been extremely generous in its support for organisations like the Simon Community, Aware, Focus Ireland and St Vincent de Paul. Your generosity means a lot. This has been a very busy term which has been marked by many memorable events. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank the students and staff involved in the 60th celebration. It was a great occasion which reflected the very positive, vibrant and talented community of teachers and students at the core of our work here in the school. St. Kilian's also welcomed members of the German National Team and the DFB to the school in advance of their FIFA World qualification Group game against the Republic of Ireland in the Aviva Stadium that evening. In particular I would like to acknowledge the contribution the parent body makes to the success of the school. Your support and input is valued and appreciated, it enhances the work of the school on many levels. Thank you! Finally, I would like to thank the staff for their commitment and dedication to the students of St. Kilian’s and most particularly for the time they give over and above which makes the learning experiences of their students richer. Our school is a better school because of their efforts. As we approach the end of our 60th year, I wish everybody connected with the school a very happy and peaceful Christmas and look forward to a successful New Year. Alice Lynch

Season’s Greetings to St Kilian's The Principal, the administration and the teaching team of the Lycée Français d’Irlande wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. May 2013 will see a reinforcement of the already strong links between the LFI and St. Kilian's and the creation of new common projects to the full benefit of the pupils.

Careers Fair – Choices 2013 The annual Careers Fair – Choices 2013 was held on Thursday 22nd November 2012 here in the school. The fair has been running for 10 years and is organised by the Guidance Counsellors from Sandford Park, St. Benildus and St. Kilian’s. Over 650 second level students from 10 local schools attended. The evening provided an excellent opportunity for students in 4th, 5th and 6th year to gather information regarding a range of third level courses available here in Ireland and Europe.

Debating/Public Speaking Well done on a very successful term. David Kane of 12th class was chosen as a Rotary Young Leader to participate in Euroscola Day on March 7th 2013 in the European parliament in Strasbourg. He, with a group of students chosen from the North and South, will also visit Stormont, in Belfast, and Daίl Eireann, in Dublin, as part of a Youth Leadership Development programme. The Concern Debating Team of 11th Class, Lucas Hallen, Diane Maguire, Una Connolly, Mary O’Toole and Sara McQuaid have won all their debates to date and are on full points in the League Table.

Careers Fair – Choices 2013 cont…. There were twenty-five Irish universities, European universities, colleges and PLC’S represented at the careers fair. In addition to this, forty current third level students who are studying a wide range of courses were on hand for prospective students to ask questions. Many thanks to everyone who was involved in organising the evening and helped to make it a great success.

Debating/Public Speaking cont….. Molly Flynn, Catey Clarkson, Anna Heisterkamp and Tara Junghenn of 10th Class are through to the Dublin final of the Mental Health Public Speaking competition. Steffi Vollmer-Fox of 11th Class also participated in the Soroptomists’ Public Speaking competition – a first for St. Kilian’s Norbert Rebow and Molly Flynn were successful in the Leinster debates which will continue in the New Year and the Junior debaters of 8th class are also performing well in the league organised by UCD and Trinity College. With a new in-house competition beginning in February interest in debating is certainly increasing throughout the school.

Christmas Fund Raising The Focus Ireland Cake sale raised €604. This was an increase on last year's figure and thank you to all students and parents who helped with this cause. Details of other fundraising efforts will be posted on the school website and school tv screens once available.

The girls performed and argued excellently and ended up successfully beating the Newbridge team. They are now in the Quarter Finals. Primary School There is a lot of excitement at present in the Primary School – Christmas is getting closer by the hour and we are busily preparing for our bi-annual Christmas show on Wednesday. There is a palpable air of happiness in the school with singing, dancing and acting being rehearsed in the classrooms. Wednesday evening will be the last of many events that have taken place this term. In November we celebrated Sankt Martin’s Evening with two celebrations. Once again the pupils were outstanding in their performances and we had such a large audience at the Kindergarten and Lower Primary evening that I think we will have to go the gym next year. Other events include: Science assemblies, Green School workshops, the Accord Programme for our Senior Primary, the Book Fair, Nikolaus and visits to the Theatre for Kindergarten and to the National Concert Hall for some Primary School classes.

In the new year we start with two busy weeks, on the first Saturday of term 5B will be showing their project on “How Can We Make Paper Fly?”, in the Primary Section of the Science Fair in the R.D.S. and on the second Saturday the First Lego League will go with two teams to compete in the National Final in Galway. Alongside all our activities we continue with our normal work maintaining the high academic standard we expect from our pupils. As one pupil said to me recently – “There’s never time to be bored in St. Kilians”. Just what I want to hear! Sarah Finnegan Head of Primary and Kindergarten

School receives the German Irish Chamber Kuratorium Award for 2012 On the 14th December St Kilian’s Deutsche Schule was honoured by the German Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce at its annual Luncheon. The school was presented with the Kuratorium Award for 2012. This award is traditionally given to organisations that have made a significant contribution to German -Irish relations . The award was presented by the President of the Kuratorium Mr Jack Golden and was graciously accepted on behalf of the school by Ms Lynch. It is a fitting tribute to and acknowledgement of the school's contribution to the German community in Dublin and the teaching and learning of German in ireland over the last 60

    years.

Soccer After the qualifying group rounds and early knock-out stages of the Boys' Leagues, we enter the Christmas break with many of our teams in the advanced stages of competition. Our senior team have qualified for the semi-finals of the Metropolitan League and await the winners of Grange Community College and Colaiste de H-Ide. The seniors have also qualified for the same stage of the John Murphy Leinster 'B' Cup, where they will face the winners of Colaiste Pobail, Rathcairn and St Fintanas, Enfield. Both games will be at home. Our younger teams have also done well. The under 15s have made it through to the quarter-finals of the league and will have home advantage, though we have yet to find out who our opponents will be. The under 17s were desperately unlucky not to make it out of their group - they lost narrowly by 3-2 to Deansrath, having drawn against Rosary College and beaten Ballinteer CS.

Jimmy Murakami visits St. Kilian's again St Kilian's was delighted to welcome Mr Jimmy T. Murakami to the school again. Mr Murakami is an Oscar nominated and BAFTA award winning Japanese American film director and animator. Among his most well known works are the animated adaptations of the Raymond Briggs books, "The Snowman" and "When the Wind Blows". Mr Murakami conducted a two day workshop with classes 10A and 10B in conjunction with Ms. Holloway. The students were encouraged to develop their own ideas and produce a storyboard comprising of a number of drawings. Mr Murakami praised their work and he recognised a great talent in some of the students. A number of students' work were selected and it is hoped that they will develop this further. He is hoping to return in January to run another workshop.

Soccer cont…. Our under 14s have made a winning start to their group campaign and are in a very strong position to qualify for the knock-out stages in January. At Primary school level, our team has played a series of friendly games to ascertain their position in the five-tier divisional set-up. Our results have been good and we will compete in the top division in the New Year, with us likely to enter a second team in one of the lower divisions as well.

Christmas Bazaar On Saturday the 24th of November we had a fun filled day with plenty of Bratwurst, Glüehwein and entertainment. Many thanks to all the parents who took part and helped in organising the bazaar. We would also like to express our gratitude to all our sponsors who supported our event this year.

Hockey Our girls lead the way with our senior 1 team unbeaten so far with 2 league wins at senior 1 level. This is excellent form having stepped up from senior 3 to senior 1. Our minor girls have won 2 and drawn 1 and our juniors and first years are holding their own in their respective leagues. Can our girls come good again in 2013 with another league or cup. Our boys are all doing well with wins draws and losses at each age level. The new year games will be important for our boys teams if we want to make the semi finals of the leagues. Our boys have much to do in 2013.
