· (2004/ACE) 30 tracks - a Killer release !!! This prime slice of50s Americana is an important release for all rockabilly fans aswell as followers of the late great Gene Vincent. It all took place in a motel in Mineola, where a bunch of good ole boysgathered for a songwriting session convened by the motel’sowner, Jack Rhodes. A guitarist in small time country outfits,Rhodes didn’t take up songwriting in earnest until the early fifties by which time he was in his forties. His lyrical flair made himsomething of a hillbilly poet. One or two of his songs gotrecorded and pretty soon he was on his way. In 1956 Rhodes’‘Woman Love’ got a free ride on the back of Gene Vincent’smillion selling ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’. Another of his songs, ‘MissingPersons’, appeared onthe B-side of ‘Gone’ ByFerlin Husky a 1957smash on the Capitollabel. Most of thematerial consists ofdemos by Rhodes’accolytes There is acommon thread in thatGene Vincent recordedfive of the songs heardhere and tried out atleast three others writtenfor him in the wake of‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’. Theoriginal denos of ‘RedBlues Jeans And A PonyTail’,B-I-Bickey-Bi-Bo-Bo-Go’ and ‘Five Days Five Days’ are alsoheard here for the first time.
