Frisch trabe sonder Ruh und Rast,

Freshly trot without peace and rest,

Mein gutes Ross, durch Nacht und Regen!

my good steed, through night and rain!

Was scheust du dich vor Busch und Ast

Why shy you yourself at bush and branch(Why do you shy at bush and branch)

Und strauchelst auf den wilden Wegen?

and stumble on the wild paths?

Dehnt auch der Wald sich tief und dicht,

Stretches also the forest itself deep and dense,(Surely the forest stretches before us deep and dense,)

Doch muss er endlich sich erschliessen;

but must it finally itself open-up;(but it must open up in the end;)

Und freundlich wird ein fernes Licht

and friendly will a distant light(and a distant, friendly light will)

Uns aus dem dunkeln Tale grüßen.

Wohl könnt ich über Berg und Feld

upon your slender back fly,

Und mich am bunten Spiel der Welt,

and myself at-the colorful game of-the world

An holden Bildern mich vergnügen;

at-the lovely images myself enjoy;

Manch Auge lacht mir traulich zu

many-an eye laughs me intimately at,(many an eye smiles beckoningly at me,)

Und beut mit Frieden, Lieb und Freude,

and offers with peace, love and joy;

Und dennoch eil ich ohne Ruh,

and yet hurry I without rest,

Bei ihr bald heilten, bald zerrissen

with her soon healed, soon torn-apart(feels when near to her–either to be healed or torn apart–)

Fühlt ich drei Tage nur den Schmerz,

felt I for-three days only the pain,(I felt only the pain for three days,)

Und ach! die Freude musst ich missen!

and ah! the joy had I to-be-without!

Weit sehn wir über Land und See

Far see we over the-land and sea(We see fly far over land and sea)

Zur wärmer Flur den Vogel fliegen;

to-the warmer pastures the birds fly;(the birds to warmer pastures.)

Wie sollte denn die Liebe je

How should then the love ever(How could then love ever)

In ihrem Pfade sich betrügen?

in its path itself deceive?(lose its path?)

Drum trabe mutig durch die Nacht!

So trot bravely through the night!

Und schwinden auch die dunkeln Bahnen,

and fade also the dark pathways,(and if the dark pathways fade,)
