FUNERAL SENTENCES

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. John 11: 25, 26

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another. Job 19: 25–27

We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. 1 Timothy 6: 7, Job 1: 21

Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 38, 39

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many mansions. John 14: 1

COLLECT

Let us pray.

O eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life: We beseech thee to shed forth upon thy whole Church in Paradise and on earth the bright beams of thy light and heavenly comfort; and grant that we, following the good example of those who have loved and served thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into the fulness of thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

HYMN Sung by the choir

Christ, whose glory fills the skies,

Christ, the true, the only light, Sun of righteousness, arise,

Triumph o'er the shades of night; Dayspring from on high, be near;

Daystar, in my heart appear.

Dark and cheerless is the morn Unaccompanied by thee: Joyless is the day's return,

Till thy mercy's beams I see, Till they inward light impart,

Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

Visit then this soul of mine; Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;

Fill me, radiancy divine; Scatter all my unbelief;

More and more thyself display, Shining to the perfect day.

READING 2 Esdras 2: 42-end read by Brenda Newey

A Reading from the second book of Esdras.

I Esdras saw upon the mount Sion a great people, whom I could not number, and they all praised the Lord with songs. And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature, taller than all the rest, and upon every one of their heads he set crowns, and was more exalted; which I marvelled at greatly. So I asked the angel, and said, Sir, what are these?

Page 5: Sidney Brian Newey - oxford.anglican.org

He answered and said unto me, These be they that have put off the mortal clothing, and put on the immortal, and have confessed the name of God: now are they crowned, and receive palms. Then said I unto the angel, What young person is it that crowneth them, and giveth them palms in their hands? So he answered and said unto me, It is the Son of God, whom they have confessed in the world. Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stiffly for the name of the Lord. Then the angel said unto me, Go thy way, and tell my people what manner of things, and how great wonders of the Lord thy God, thou hast seen.

Here ends the lesson.

ANTHEM Psalm 121

Sung by the choir

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh even from the Lord: who hath made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: and he that keepeth thee will not sleep.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel: shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord himself is thy keeper: the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand;

So that the sun shall not burn thee by day: neither the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in: from this time forth for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.

Amen.

READING John 20:1-10

Read by Rachel Bentley

The holy Gospel is written in the twentieth chapter of that according to Saint John, beginning at the first verse.

All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

HYMN Recording by the choir of the Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick

Director: Christopher Betts, Organ: Christopher Monks.

Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness, Leave the gloomy haunts of sadness, Come into the daylight’s splendour,

There with joy thy praises render Unto him whose grace unbounded

Hath this wondrous banquet founded; High o’er all the heavens he reigneth, Yet to dwell with thee he deigneth.

Sun, who all my life dost brighten; Light, who dost my soul enlighten; Joy, the sweetest man e’er knoweth; Fount, whence all my being floweth;

At thy feet I cry, my Maker, Let me be a fit partaker

Of this blessèd food from heaven, For our good, thy glory, given.

Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray thee,

Let me gladly here obey thee; Never to my hurt invited,

Be thy love with love requited: From this banquet let me measure,

Lord, how vast and deep its treasure; Through the gifts thou here dost give me,

As thy guest in heaven receive me.

PRAYERS Led by the Associate Archdeacon of Dorchester, the Revd Canon David Tyler

Lord, have mercy upon us.

All Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

All Our Father, which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done; In earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Enter not into judgement with thy servant, O Lord;

All For in thy sight shall no man living be justified. Grant unto him eternal rest;

All And let perpetual light shine upon him. We believe verily to see the goodness of the Lord

All In the land of the living. O Lord, hear our prayer;

All And let our cry come unto thee.

Let us pray. O Father of all, we pray to thee for those whom we love, but see no longer. Grant them thy peace; let light perpetual shine upon them; and in thy loving wisdom and almighty power work in them the good purpose of thy perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Page 9: Sidney Brian Newey - oxford.anglican.org

Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort: Deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn, that casting every care on thee, they may know the consolation of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitations of thy glory and dominion, world without end.

All Amen.

HYMN Sung by the choir

Jerusalem the golden,

With milk and honey blest, Beneath thy contemplation

Sink heart and voice oppresst. I know not, O I know not, What joys await us there, What radiancy of glory,

What bliss beyond compare.

They stand, those halls of Zion, Conjubilant with song,

And bright with many an angel, And all the martyr throng: The Prince is ever in them,

The daylight is serene; The pastures of the blessèd

Are decked in glorious sheen.

Page 10: Sidney Brian Newey - oxford.anglican.org

There is the throne of David; And there, from care released,

The shout of them that triumph, The song of them that feast;

And they who with their Leader Have conquered in the fight,

For ever and for ever Are clad in robes of white.

O sweet and blessèd country,

Shall I ever see thy Face? O sweet and blessèd country,

Shall I ever win thy grace?! Exult, O dust and ashes!

The Lord shall be thy part: His only, his for ever,

Thou shalt be and thou art!.

COMMENDATION

Let us commend our brother Brian to the mercy of God our maker and redeemer.

Silence is kept.

O God our creator and redeemer, by thy power Christ hath conquered death and returned to thee in glory, bearing in his body the marks of his passion. Confident of thy victory and claiming the promises of Christ, we entrust thy servant Brian into thy keeping in the name of Jesus our Lord, who, though he died, now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever: world without end. Amen.
