FROM THE PRESIDENT _ I hope everyone is enjoying the winter. So far so good, halfway through February and no major weather incidents. This has been some of the most pleasant winter weather I can remember. Lets hope it continues!

Our change to having committee meetings in January was very encouraging. Attendance was super and to see a packed room for the first National Convention committee meeting was definitely exciting. Its safe to say there is a lot of interest and excitement among our members in the upcoming 2015 National Convention. Believe it or not it’s spring show and sale season. I hope to see many of you along the way. Good luck to all

involved whether exhibitor, consignor, buyer, or spectator. One of the changes

made during the January committee meetings included a move for the 2012 Illinois Championship Show from the Interstate Center in Bloomington to the Logan County Fairgrounds in Lincoln. The decision was made due to a variety of reasons and I look forward to seeing another outstanding show there. As I looked through the news archives on the Illinois Holstein Association website I couldn’t help but notice all of the great Holstein people that we lost during the past year. People that touched lives across the state and beyond in many ways, People that will be remembered for some time to come for their contributions. It seems our industry sees never ending advances in technology, from the field to the barn. There are a multitude of newly developed tools available to make us more efficient and profitable. It’s definitely an exciting time in agriculture! Be sure to find what works best for you and keep moving forward!

Kevin Wendling

2011 was a great year for business activity for Holstein USA. Over 360,000 holsteins were registered which was the most since 1995. There continues to be lots of interest in adding value through registered Holsteins. Holstein USA has a new dairy herd management software program that is available now. Dairy “Rythms” is tailored to meet the needs of breeders through the ability to synch information between the Holstein USA database and your home PC. Classification and genetic information can be quickly accessed which will make management of your registered Holsteins more convenient. Contact Callie Unruh to learn more and get set up with the program. Your Board of Directors continues to work with other dairy industry sectors to maintain a reliable genetic evaluation system. The Holstein Association recently presented a proposal to the industry that would allow breeders to have a major voice in how the system works and who controls the database. We firmly believe this is critical to keep U.S. genetics the gold standard for the world. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about this issue. I am looking forward to spring so that we can replenish our short forage supply. I hope to see you at one of the spring sales. Remember to make plans to attend the Convention in Springfield, Mo. It will be a great time to make new friends and enjoy good Holstein fellowship.

_LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Page 8 Spring 2012

ILLINOIS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING President Wendling called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m., on January 4, 2012, in Bloomington, Ill. Secretary Tina Yagow took the roll of members in attendance. Minutes from the last meeting of the Board in December were handed out and a motion to approve them was made by Jim Schumacher, seconded by Dale Drendel and approved by the group. New Treasurer Carol Jones was introduced and President Wendling informed the Board that the checking account is being transferred to Campus State Bank near Carol’s home with a balance over $52,000. The following 2012 Committee Reports were read to the Board:

Dutchess and Little Miss Holstein Committee Report

Chairman: Lori Lyons The 2012 Dutchess competition will be held the evening before the Junior Championship Show with a 5:30 p.m. start time. It will be held in the show ring or another site on the fairgrounds and the deadline for entries will be June 15th. Last year there were two Dutchess and two Little Miss Holstein Contestants and we would like to increase participation in the future. There seem to be very few girls in the Dutchess age group, however. It was suggested that we have an activity to attract participants, perhaps a spa day or something like that. Proposed program changes include allowing Little Miss Holstein “designees” to participate for multiple years rather than limiting them to one year. Budget for 2012-13 is $675 in excess of Revenue.

Futurity Committee ReportChairman: Wendy Erbsen The Futurity Show takes place at the State Championship Show, deadlines are July 1 for two-year-old and five-year-old renewal and November 1 is the deadline for new futurity animals and renewal of second year. The Committee would like to promote the new opportunity to be published in the Herald, with payment due May 1st. The Committee discussed making up for lack of payment of 5% to animals in the ring for 5-year-old class in 2011. The Committee asked that the purse be rolled into the next show with a new rule change – “If less than 20 animals are shown, the portion of the unclaimed purse shall be applied to the future five-year futurity for the same animals nominated.” Budget for 2012-13 is to breakeven.

Membership Committee ReportChairman: Brian Olbrich Membership went down slightly from 2010 to 2011. The committee recommends mailing membership forms by March 1st, anticipates

dues arriving in April, with the $5 late fee for any dues paid after June 1st. The mailing list needs to be reviewed by the officers of each club to narrow it down a little to save on postage. The committee recommends re-formatting the membership form to make it easier for households to fill out one sheet rather than multiple pages for family members. The committee also suggests adding a box for people to check if they would like their membership form emailed to them in the future, rather than mailed. Budget for 2012-13 is $17,000 profit.

Planning and Evaluation Committee Report

Chairman: Gary Janssen Each Committee Chairman gave a brief description of their committee activities. Boyd Schaufelberger joined the group and mentioned keeping our members up-to-date about FDA testing of milk. Gary asked for a show of hands of interest in moving the state sale to the spring and the consensus was that there is definitely interest. Budget for 2012-13 is zero.

PDCA Calf Sale Committee ReportChairman: Marc Hilgendorf & Gene McCoy The 2012 PDCA Calf Sale will be held April 14th at the Round Barn in Champaign. Entries are due by February 1st for advertising. They are looking for 25-30 suggested show-aged Holstein calves. They need the birthdate of the calf and registration for dam and sire. The Selection Committee will be Steve Irwin, Jerry Smith, Bob Miller, Gary Janssen, Kevin Lyons, Marc Hilgendorf and Jason Oertel. Creighton Barker will be the Auctioneer. Larry Kleiner will read Pedigrees. Illini Dairy Club will do preparation. The Committee discussed the possibility of offering picks/flushes and no decision was made. Budget for 2012-13 is to breakeven.

Promotions Committee ReportChairman: Carrie Pollard; Report given by John Mitchell The Promotions Committee will continue to distribute Heralds at National Convention and World Dairy Expo, with a special Midwest booth this upcoming year next to Wisconsin at World Dairy Expo. There were four entries last year in the Cow of the Year Contest and the winner was Ms. Price Star Meyer owned by the Koehn Family of Peotone. The Display Board was displayed at State Sale, State Convention, State Show and State Picnic and the same is planned for this year. Budget for 2012-13 is $1,000 in expenses.

Publications Committee ReportPublications Chairman: Stephanie Stout;

Report given by Julie Drendel Editor Julie Drendel distributed a handout detailing the financial summary of the Herald as an enterprise. The summary showed this year the Herald lost a little over $800 but there is still one more issue (the spring Midwest issue) during the fiscal year and it usually makes a profit. The Committee recommends the June Herald be a “Midwest issue” and the December Herald be replaced with one or two newsletters (an 8-16 page newsletter after Convention and a 4-8 page following the committee meetings). Julie Drendel will work on a budget analysis to see if the newsletter option will save us any money. Budget for 2012-13 is to breakeven. The Board discussed the publications and it was moved by Joe Engel to give the Executive Board authority to participate in a Midwest Issue if the other states agree to participate too. The motion was approved by the group. Discussion about the winter issue of the Herald versus a newsletter was tabled by Mike Netemeyer until the June Board meeting, motion to table was seconded by Joe Engel.

Website Committee ReportWebsite Chairman: Stephanie Aves The Committee suggests retaining Holstein World as the host of the website, but other options will be explored/considered for webmaster. The Committee discussed soliciting sponsors/advertising on the website. Julie Drendel brought up the idea of enhancing the website with feature sections like a “Breeder Profile”. Budget for 2012-13 is to breakeven.

National Convention ChairmenChairman: Ron Schaufelberger; co-chair: Dale Drendel This was a brain-storming meeting of the National Convention Committee Chairmen. The convention will be held June 29-July 3, 2015. They discussed pre-convention tours, budget and finance, the Trade Show, the sale site, Host-Day Tours, logo and theme, non-delegate tour, Family Night (maybe at Medieval Times), Junior Program (maybe Marla Behrends), Fundraising (maybe sponsors for the gators to run around the grounds and a calendar). Tour sites recommended were Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mint, and the Field Museum. Potential Sponsors named were Alflex, Monsanto, Midwest, DMI, Select Sires, ABS, Cargill, ADM and First Farm Credit. Potential Banquet speakers recommended were Max Armstrong and Orion Samuelson. Emcee nominated was Mike Hutjens.

State Sale Committee ReportChairman: John Erbsen The Committee had a positive discussion about the possibility of moving the State Sale from the fall to the spring. This would

Page 9: Spring 2012 Illinois Holstein Herald

Illinois Holstein Herald Page 9

involve having two sales during one year and also talking to Clinton County and Northwest Spring Sizzler about the conflict with their sales every other year. The committee asks the Board to discuss and vote on this issue. The 2012 State Sale is scheduled for northern Illinois, either Freeport or Belvidere, on October 27th. The Committee recommends reducing expenses by cutting the advertising in Cattle Connection. Four hundred and fifty catalogs should be printed for the sale. For Sale Commissions, the recommendation to the Board is that the Sale Chairman be paid 1% of sale gross; co-chairman receive 3% of the consignments they secure (with a $500 minimum) and co-co-chairman receive 3% of the consignments they secure (with no minimum guarantee). Ringmen compensation should be 3% commission on animals they secure the final bid on, with a minimum of $500. The Chairman has discretion to choose how much to pay the Auctioneer and Pedigree reader. The Committee recommends the State Sale cease holding money for choice lots in escrow.Projected profit for the State Sale(s) during 2012-13 is $5,000. The Board of Directors discussed sale commissions and compensation. Boyd Schaufelberger moved to approve the

compensation package recommendations and the motion was approved by the group. Dale Drendel moved to authorize Sale Chairman John Erbsen to talk to the Clinton County Classic and the Spring Sizzler to get their opinions on the Holstein Association moving the State Sale to the spring. The motion was seconded by Boyd Schaufelberger and approved by the group. Gary Janssen moved that we cease holding the down payment for Choice Lots in escrow and that the consignor be given their 10% immediately following the sale. The motion was seconded by Bruce Clanton and approved by the Board.

State Show ReportChairman: Brian Wesemann; Co-Chairman: Nate Janssen The dates we hope to hold the 2012 State Show will be July 18-July 20, with animals arriving on July 17. The Interstate Center/McLean County Fairgrounds have issues with having us on those dates with time to clean up afterward, so they recommend we find another location. The increasing cost there every year has also encouraged us to search for new locations. New locations were discussed, including Pontiac, Gordyville, State Fairgrounds, and Lincoln. Going back to Lincoln seems the most feasible and attractive, and the cost was preliminarily discussed as

$3000 for site rental and clean-up. A motion was made by the committee to contact the fairgrounds in Lincoln to get a formal contract drawn up for 3 years at their facility. Committee Chairmen will meet with the facility to discuss donating fans to improve ventilation, the PA system, Announcer Stand, whether the bark will be removed prior to cattle arrival and potential lunch stand/wagon on-site. The Chairmen will contact Chris Lahmers about judging the Open Show, with the next choice being Chris Hill and then Robert Yeoman. The Committee discussed the online check-in for the show and Committee members asked that online check-in paperwork be printed for volunteers to use during on-site check-in. The Chairmen need to make sure Julie Drendel is willing to help design and print the catalog again for 2012. Committee members asked whether entry fees could be lowered if the cost of the show site decreases and that will be discussed in future years. The Committee Chairmen ask for members’ help in soliciting donations from their local suppliers they do business with and they can follow-up after the initial request is made if you let them know who to talk to. Budget for 2012-2013 is breakeven. Boyd Schaufelberger moved to give the Show Chairmen authority to discuss installing fans

Page 10 Spring 2012

at the Lincoln fairgrounds with the grounds managers and report back to the President who will present the options to the Board at the June meeting. The motion was seconded by Dale Drendel and approved by the Board.

Youth Committee ReportChairman: Glen Meier The Spring Thing will be at The Chateau in Bloomington on March 3rd and 4th. The Youth will travel to the National Convention in Springfield, MO, Illinois Championship Junior Show, Illinois State Fair Junior Show and the Fall Annual Meeting. The group raised $1,900 from silent/live auction at state convention and $2,973.50 from calf donated by Select Sires at State Sale. In the future, the Committee requests commission not be taken out of any sale animals donated to the Illinois Juniors. Applications for the Allen Tucker Memorial Scholarship are due February 20th. The Committee discussed National Convention costs from the past. Ticket and hotel prices for the 2012 convention have not been released yet. The folding display contest will be split into two categories this year – Scientific and Promotions. DJM and YDJM books will be streamlined for 2013 to encourage increased participation. A judge has been identified for

the Illinois Championship Junior Show, we are just waiting to contact them after the dates are set for the show. The budget for the Juniors is kept separate from the Senior membership funds, so they are self-sustaining.

All of the proceeding 2012 Committee Reports were approved by a motion made by Glen Meier, seconded by Brian Olbrich and approved by the Board. New Business A statewide fundraiser for National Convention 2015 was mentioned and discussion was delegated to the National Convention Steering Committee. Ken Meng has resigned his position as Director from the Southern Club. Joann Hartman has been nominated by the club to fill out his term. It was moved by Joe Engel to accept this nomination. The motion was seconded by Beth Weas Cash and approved by the Board. Aaron Mitchell and Sarah Sheehan were nominated as Junior Reps to the Board of Directors and their nominations were approved in a motion by Dale Drendel, seconded by Brian Olbrich, and approved by the Board. Dairy Science Student Profile

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? UW-Madisonwas an easy choice for me; it is a world-class university in mybackyard. Madison provided a large city atmosphere with Big

Ten sports, yet still had a small community on the agriculture campus. What has been your most memorable college experience? Being involved inseveral activities on campus have been invaluable experiences in my collegecareer. Through Badger Dairy Club, Association of Women in Agriculture, NationalAgri-Marketing Association and the Collegiate Dairy judging team I have beengiven the opportunity to travel all over the United States and visit Canada. Thememories through these organizations and connections I have made are thosethat I will never forget. What has been your favorite course? My favorite Dairy Science course has beenDairy Herd Management - it is a great combination of a lot of important topics on a dairy farm in a real world setting. My all time favorite course has been myCampaign Strategy course through the Life Sciences Communication department. This course has taught me many facets of the business world by developing a product campaign strategy. What are your future career goals? Upon graduation I have accepted a positionwith Dow Agro-Sciences where I will be on their sales staff. I also plan to continue tostay active within the dairy industry with Registered Holsteins and dairy promotion.

MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERSIntroducing...

Welcome to Gary's Dairy home to Good-Time Holsteins! This operation all started with a big dream that was fueled by helping on my grandparents farm, and doing relief milking for neighbors on weekends and in thesummer.

During 1995-96 I attended the short-course/schoolfor beginning dair y far mers at UW -Madison, with an emphasis in grass based dairying. In July of 1996, with thehelp of my parents, I rented a barn and milked 20 cows and25 heifers with 4 buckets and a step-saver. In March of1998 I had the opportunity to buy 65 acres of mostly clearland. In the meantime the herd grew to 35 milking with 40head of young stock. In October of 1998 the opportunityarose to buy 13 acres and a 60 stall barn with pipeline; itwas an opportunity I could not pass up. About this sametime my Dad sold his beef herd which opened up a 50x150foot loafing barn for young stock and dry cows. In the fallof 1999 I r emodeled the bar n to put in new tie stalls and comfort mats. Due to a need to milk faster and the willingness to push cow numbers, in the summer I built a

swing 10 milking parlor onto the east side of the barn. In November of 2007 I married. Though I didn’t know it at the time, I later learned that the farm had now

come back into the family since, my wife Holly’s great-great grandparents were actually the first people to farmthis patch of land and built the original section of the barn.

In the summer of 2008 my dad built a 40x80 foot cover-all shed for hay and young stock which is the sametime he started buying some higher end cattle to “play” with. These animals are also milked at Gary's Dairy.

In December of 2009 another 80 acres of land was purchased to bring the farm to its current land size of 160acres. Due to the ever growing herd and storage shortage, I built a 40x144 foot commodity shed in the springof 2011. The shed is used for dry hay, machinery, and calves up to 6 months of age.

The herd has constantly been in a growing and changing state. When I first started it was only a grade herd, with only a few Registered Holsteins and with year-round calving. As time went on the whole herd became registered with most being identified grades (nowup to 93% registered) and a few more registered animals purchased. With the will to milk more cowsin the summer ver y few calves ar e bor n in the winter. In the summer cows utilize pasture as muchas possible and are supplemented with round bales.Cows calve in their own pasture and calves stay ontheir own pastur e for 3 months when they ar eweaned then moved the sheds. Cows have beenbred with the thought in mind that there is no suchthing as a cow too big or too fertile. One line thatstands out started with an old brood cow, Nest-BrosOdyssey Rihanna, who has many animals tracingback to her with an exceptional cow going as my first excellent cow – Good-Time Zander Rihanna. With continued breeding hopefully we can achieve more great cows like this.

Gary’s Dairy would like to thank Marathon County Holstein Breeders for this ad and hopefully your farm isalso a Good-Time!

Many breeder’s have the goal and dream to breed an Excellent cowand it was so rewarding for me to accomplish. I want to say thankyou to my family for trusting me with the breeding program andallowing me to mate cows and select bulls as I see fit. After takingover nearly 15 years ago, I’ve tried a few mating programs and stillprefer my own common sense and researching bulls and cow families and it works! It’s been so exciting to watch our herd changefor the better and the future looks bright.

leadership, the Little Miss Holstein contest was created. Now in its third year, interest in that contest as well as the Dutchess contest continues to be strong. Throughout the rest of the year, Lori was responsible for meeting notices, membership mailings, and general tasks for the Association. Many of her duties ensured that the Association was able to run smoothly and efficiently. Brian and Lori have four children. Erin lives in Texas and is a Business Manager for Lallemand Nutrition who is a major supplier of forage and animal nutrition products. Emily is a first year at Vermont Law and will be interning with the National Pork Producers Council in Washington D.C. this summer focusing on Environmental Law and Policy. Haley is a Junior at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign majoring in Art Education with an endorsement in Ag Education. She is involved in the Illini Dairy Club and Judging Team. Matthew is a Junior at Auburn High School and possibly plans on continuing the family tradition of attending the University of Illinois. He aspires to be a Pharmacologist, studying the effects of drugs in the human body. Their children have are very involved in the dairy industry, and the Illinois Holstein Association. All four have represented the Illinois Juniors at various National Holstein Conventions and exhibited at the local and state level. As their children were involved in the Junior Holstein Association, Lori made sure to support them as well as many of the other juniors. She attended multiple Annual Meetings and Spring Thing events. Today, Lori is a Supervisor at the Rockford Office of Sikich LLP. She is also very involved

in the Rockford-area Illini Club. She still makes time to attend games in Champaign.

The 2011 Distinguished Service award was presented to Lori Lyons, Rockford, Ill., at the Committee Meetings of the Illinois Holstein Association on January 3. Lori has been involved in agriculture since a young age, however, she did not start in the dairy industry. She grew up on a horse farm in Geneva, Ill., spending her youth raising and showing horses. She focused on the English and Hunt Seat disciplines. Lori attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and majored in Animal Sciences. She was involved in the Block and Bridle club, but it is here that she was also first exposed to dairy. She joined the Illini Dairy Club and through a Spring Break trip, met her future husband, Brian Lyons. While at U of I, Lori participated on the Dairy Judging team and was actively involved in the Illini Dairy Club. After college, she and Brian were married and moved to Mt. Carroll, Ill., where Lori began working for a bank. Throughout the years, her duties expanded taking her into the accounting world. Lori first started working with the Illinois Holstein Association 20 years ago. Lori was the Secretary-Treasurer for many years and was instrumental in the runnings of the Association. Lori had many duties that were “behind the scenes” but events would not have happened without her. The Illinois Holstein Championship Show always seemed to go off without a hitch because of Lori’s organization and execution. She was responsible for ordering all of the ribbons and awards, helped with the cataloging of entries, and made sure to keep the ringmen in line! Several years ago, Lori also became the Chair of the Dutchess contest. Through her

I run the meeting at Spring Thing and set up and run the Fall Annual Meeting, as well as setting up any tour we do after the Fall Annual Meeting.
