Holy Families in our Midst I was moved recently by a newspaper story featuring the headline: “Indianapolis church cages Holy Family in immigration protest”. The flight of Mary and Joseph with Jesus is starkly similar to what many immigrants today are routinely suffering. The retired Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, Arizona, a native of Chicago, points out in a statement on immigration policy, “The Holy Family experienced being strangers in a strange land. They felt the fear, the anxiety of being displaced. They were turned away and shunned. If they were on earth today, they would qualify, under international law, as a refugee family.” In southern Arizona bordering Mexico, Bishop Kicanas has witnessed firsthand many crimes inflicted upon immigrants. We too know that many immigrants live in our Rogers Park neighborhood. A few years ago I worked with Loyola University in settling a refugee family from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The family of seven had fled the Congo to Tanzania where they lived in a refugee camp for almost 20 years before being granted visas to travel to the USA. They were settled in Rogers Park through Catholic Charities’ refugee service. This past spring many parishioners assisted a family from Lebanon to settle in Chicago as they fled the deteriorating conditions in their country and the displacement of Christians. This family received their visas through the US State Department’s lottery. This couple had no refugee organization to sponsor them but as Catholics they came to the nearest Catholic Church, St Ignatius. They found they were welcomed as strangers. The expression of support from parishioners moved me deeply. It was one of my first experiences of seeing the St Ignatius community putting its faith into action. On this the feast day of the Holy Family, how might we pay attention and learn about the plight of migrant families today? Might we ponder Bishop Kicanas’s statement in considering that we have many holy families around us? Although immigration is a complex issue, we should not be deterred from our responsibility as Christians to learn more about this issue and to take up the cause of these our brothers and sisters. I would recommend reading the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, “Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration and the Movement of Peoples” Pope Francis noted “Despite the problems, risks, and difficulties to be faced, great numbers of migrants and refugees continue to be inspired by confidence and hope; in their hearts they long for a better future, not only for themselves but for their families.” As we approach the New Year let us remember the many holy families in need of our support through constant prayer and material support.

Sagradas Familias en Nuestro Medio Recientemente me conmovió un artículo periodístico con el titular: "La iglesia de Indianápolis enjaula a la Sagrada Familia en protesta por la inmigración". La huida de María y José con Jesús es muy similar a la que sufren muchos inmigrantes hoy en día. El obispo retirado Gerald Kicanas de Tucson, Arizona, originario de Chicago, señala en una declaración sobre la política de inmigración: “La Sagrada Familia experimentó ser extraños en una tierra extraña. Yo recomendaría leer la Conferencia Católica de Obispos de los Estados Unidos, "La enseñanza social católica sobre la inmigración y el movimiento de los pueblos" El Papa Francisco señaló: “A pesar de los problemas, los riesgos y las dificultades que enfrentan, un gran número de migrantes y refugiados continúan inspirados por la confianza y la esperanza; en sus corazones anhelan un futuro mejor, no solo para ellos sino para sus familias ”. Al acercarnos al Año Nuevo, recordemos a las muchas familias santas que necesitan nuestro apoyo a través de la oración constante y el apoyo material.

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD On January 1, we will celebrate a new year on the secular calendar. On the liturgical calendar we celebrate the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. What does this mean? In 431, there was a bitter controversy among theologians over the role of Mary in the Catholic Church. They debated the question: Who is Mary in God’s plan? In the end, the bishops declared that Mary is really the mother of Jesus and Jesus is really God. So, it must be said that Mary is the Mother of God. The oldest Christian greeting of Mary was proclaimed when Mary’s relative Elizabeth called her “Mother of my Lord.” When Elizabeth welcomed Mary, she recognized both the great privilege God had given Mary and Mary’s great faith in accepting it. For centuries, Mary has been praised because she believed. She is Mother of God because of her faith in God. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, celebrates Mary’s faith and trust in God alone. SOLEMNIDAD DE MARÍA, MADRE DE DIOS El 1 de enero, celebraremos un nuevo año en el calendario secular. En el calendario litúrgico celebramos la Fiesta de la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios. ¿Qué significa esto? En 431, hubo una amarga controversia entre los teólogos sobre el papel de María en la Iglesia Católica. Debatieron la pregunta: ¿Quién es María en el plan de Dios? Al final, los obispos declararon que María es realmente la madre de Jesús y que Jesús es realmente Dios. Entonces, hay que decir que María es la Madre de Dios. Justo cuando José y María huyeron con Jesús a Egipto, muchas familias hoy se ven obligadas a abandonar la tierra donde nacieron. Al igual que la Sagrada Familia, huyen de un gobierno opresivo en busca de un lugar para criar a sus familias en paz. Muchos de los refugiados que llegan a la comunidad de Rogers Park han pasado tiempo en campamentos de refugiados. Durante su tiempo en estos campos no tenían idea de dónde encontrarían paz y estabilidad. Una familia de refugiados tiene pocas opciones de dónde se establecerán. Muchas de las familias que vienen a la despensa de alimentos llegan a Chicago sin tener idea de cómo será la ciudad, y mucho menos de cómo el clima es diferente de su tierra natal. Cada semana en la despensa, los voluntarios dan la bienvenida a los recién llegados a Rogers Park. Son recibidos con una sonrisa y una comida ofrecida. La despensa ofrece alimentos básicos que son comunes a la mayoría de las culturas: arroz, frijoles, papas, pollo y carne de res. A los adultos y a los niños se les ofrecen libros para ayudarlos a aprender inglés. Una vez que nuestras familias se sienten más cómodas, a veces solicitan recursos adicionales para ayudar a aprender sobre su nuevo vecindario y país. Intentamos ayudarlos con información y referencias. Este año ha sido un año interesante con familias de todo el mundo que han llegado a Rogers Park. Con su apoyo, hemos podido ayudar a nuestras familias a sentirse como en casa en los nuevos alrededores de Rogers Park. A medida que comience el nuevo año, Ignatian Services continuará siendo el comité de bienvenida al "extraño en nuestro medio".

Just as Joseph and Mary fled with Jesus to Egypt many families today are forced to leave the land of their birth. Like the Holy Family they are fleeing an oppressive government looking for a place to raise their families in peace. Many of the refugees that arrive in the Rogers Park community have spent time in refugee camps. During their time in these camps they had no idea where they would find peace and stability. A refugee family has little choice where they will be settled. Many of the families that come to the food pantry arrive in Chicago having no idea what the city will be like let alone how the weather is different from their homeland. Each week at the pantry the volunteers welcome newcomers to Rogers Park. They are welcomed with a smile and an offer of food. The pantry offers basic foods that are common to most cultures: rice, beans, potatoes, chicken and beef. Adults and children are offered books to help them learn English. Once our families feel more comfortable, they sometimes ask for additional resources to help learn about their new neighborhood and country. We try to help them with information and referrals. This year has been an interesting year with families from all around the world finding their way to Rogers Park. With your support we have been able to help our families feel at home in the new surroundings of Rogers Park. As the new year begins Ignatian Services will continue to be the welcoming committee to the “stranger in our midst.”

OUR LADY OF THE CLOUDS This week members of our Ecuadoran community will celebrate their devotion to Our Lady of the Clouds. Here is the history. At the end of the year 1696, the Bishop of Quito, Don Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa, was very ill. Disconsolate at the thought of losing their Bishop, the people of Guálupo, a village on the outskirts of Quito, decided to organize a novena to the Virgin Mary asking her for his recovery. On December 30, they organized a Rosary procession from the town of Guálupo to the Cathedral in Quito. On the return trip, at around 4:30 in the afternoon, the chaplain of the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception of Quito, was leading the group in the praying of the Rosary. He was just beginning to recite the third decade of the Glorious Mysteries when he looked up and saw a figure forming in a large cloud in the late afternoon sky. He pointed to the east and exclaimed to the crowd: “The Virgin! The Virgin!” In the sky between the sanctuaries of Guálupo and Quito, the Blessed Virgin appeared standing on a cloud somewhat darker and denser than the others, which served as her pedestal. She wore a crown on her head and carried a bunch of lilies in her right hand. In her left hand she carried her Divine Son. She was dressed in a white silk tunic that draped to her feet in soft pleats. On her head was a long filmy white veil. The Bishop was immediately healed. He authorized the cult to the Virgin under the invocation The Virgin of the Clouds and erected an altar to her in the Cathedral of Quito. Rosaries will be said in the Chapel at 7 pm on the evenings of December 28, 29 and 30. The main celebration will take place on New Year’s Day at the noon mass.
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LAS NUBES Esta semana, los miembros de nuestra comunidad ecuatoriana celebrarán su devoción a Nuestra Señora de las Nubes. Aquí está la historia. A fines del año 1696, el obispo de Quito, don Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa,
estaba muy enfermo. Desconsolados ante la idea de perder a su Obispo, la gente de Guálupo, un pueblo en las afueras de Quito, decidió organizar una novena a la Virgen María para pedirle su recuperación. El 30 de diciembre, organizaron una procesión del Rosario desde el pueblo de Guálupo hasta la Catedral de Quito. En el viaje de regreso, alrededor de las 4:30 de la tarde, el capellán del Monasterio de la Inmaculada Concepción de Quito, dirigió al grupo en la oración del Rosario. Estaba empezando a recitar la tercera década de los Gloriosos Misterios cuando levantó la vista y vio una figura formándose en una gran nube en el cielo de la tarde. Señaló hacia el este y exclamó a la multitud: “¡La Virgen! ¡La Virgen! ”En el cielo entre los santuarios de Guálupo y Quito, la Santísima Virgen apareció parada en una nube algo más oscura y densa que las otras,

Los rosarios se rezarán en la Capilla a las 7 de la tarde del 28, 29 y 30 de diciembre. La celebración principal tendrá lugar el día de Año Nuevo en la misa del mediodía.
