It was a Spanish Night when “the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in splendid form” under the baton of Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado celebrated “a spirited music fiesta” (Münchner Merkur) at Munich‘s Odeonsplatz.

The ballet music El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) by Spain’s Manuel de Falla, with its three dances that characterize three Spanish regions, opened the lively proceedings in the open air, and somewhat later there was an excerpt from Falla’s opera La vida breve, delighting its audience: “The Spaniard Pablo Heras-Casado conducted in the Spanish temper, aflame with passion and vigour. The excerpts from Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat and La vida breve were pulsating with hot-blooded life”, enthused the Munich Abendzeitung. Falla’s works are complemented by the Iberian influences in the other works written by composers outside Spain, such as Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, premiered in Madrid and now showcased as the highlight of the evening in a high-calibre programme with star violinist Julia Fischer as soloist. The second and third movements in particular – not least thanks to the use of castanets – show clear signs of Spanish influence in the rhythm and melody. “Julia Fischer delivered a stimulating and exciting concert with wit, verve and breathtaking virtuosity. Even in the melancholy opening bars of the first movement she captivated her audience with her bewitchingly sweet tone and in the third movement she rocked the stage with her electrifying, rhythmically accented playing, as if the composer’s name had been Rockofiev” (Münchner Merkur).

The musicians rounded off this Spanish night in Munich with Claude Debussy’s homage to Spain, “Ibéria”, and Maurice Ravel’s “Alborada del gracioso”.

In the picturesque setting of the Odeonsplatz at the evocative evening hour, the Odeonsplatz Concert is entertainment of the highest standard, given the world class of the artists and the quality of the programmes presented here year by year. It is justifiably known as “Munich’s finest classical event” (Klassik Akzente).
