3 General product data (system, device, module, component) 3.1 General product requirements 3.1.1 Brief description of the product

RLS47_SPS_2895 The sensor's task is to acquire a signal to control the front windshield wiper depending on the wetting situation in the sensor area of the windshield.

RLS47_SPS_2896 The sensor's task is to acquire a signal to control the low beam depending on the environmental brightness.

RLS47_SPS_2897 The sensor's task is recording the brightness directly in front of the vehicle, with the aim to support the brightness control of the Head Up display.

RLS47_SPS_2898 The sensor's task is to to acquire a signal to trigger the air conditioning unit for the climate on the vehicle interior.

RLS47_SPS_170 The automatic wiper control features are to be regarded exclusively as comfort functions. They do not release drivers from their operating obligations set out in traffic regulations. It remains the driver's responsibility to pay attention that the wiper system is functioning perfectly. The highest priority for switching on the wiper belongs to the corresponding operating switch. The customer must secure the functionality in the entire vehicle system.

RLS47_SPS_1333 The automatic light control features are to be regarded exclusively as comfort functions. They do not release drivers from their operating obligations set out in traffic regulations. It remains the driver's responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is illuminated correctly. The highest priority for switching on the light belongs to the corresponding operating switch. The customer must secure this functionality in the entire vehicle system.

3.1.1.1 Rain function

RLS47_SPS_174 The rain sensor takes the strain off the vehicle user by automatically switching the front wiper in rainy conditions to such an extent that almost no manual intervention is necessary, even in different rain situations.

RLS47_SPS_175 Contamination of the sensor surface by dirt can lead to an unwanted trigger up to continuous wiping. For longer lasting dirt, the system responds with sensitivity reduction. The contamination can be caused e.g. by salt residues or insects.

RLS47_SPS_176 On account of the subjective evaluation of the wide range of different types of rain that occur (drizzle/cloudburst, raindrop size etc.) by vehicle users, not every driver will consider the rain sensor parameter settings perfect. For this reason, the sensitivity of the rain sensor shall be selectable by the driver.

3.1.1.2 Light function

RLS47_SPS_180 The sensor for light detection is an integral part of the sensor. The light sensor sends messages about different reasons for switch-on which cause the light module to activate the driving light when the main light switch is in an appropriate position. The priority for switching on the lights lies with the light module.

RLS47_SPS_181 The second sensor of the system responsible for the front light is an integral part of the light sensor system. It is used for the tunnel and bridge determination and to verify the reset of the light request.

RLS47_SPS_183 The light sensor is a driver assistance system and is to be regarded exclusively as a comfort function, since influences which impair the view, such as fog, mist and smoke, cannot be detected. Special attention has to be drawn to this point in the operating manual of the vehicle.

RLS47_SPS_184 Due to the variety of lighting and tunnel geometries, in individual cases an impairment of tunnel detection could occur.

3.1.1.3 Climate function

RLS47_SPS_186 The humidity sensor is an optional part of the sensor. The relative humidity and temperature at the windshield is measured and communicated by a message. This information can be used by the air conditioning system in order to control the compartment climate.

RLS47_SPS_187 The solar sensor is an optional part of the sensor. The solar sensor sends a message about the sun radiation levels measured through the windshield, separately for right/left. This information is evaluated by the air-conditioning control unit and used to control the climate of the vehicle interior.

3.1.1.4 HUD function

RLS47_SPS_189 The HUD sensor is an optional part of the sensor. It sends a message about the brightness values in the front of the vehicle. The values are used for brightness control of the Head Up Display.

3.2 Product environment 3.2.1 Overview of system interfaces to the vehicle (overall system)

RLS47_SPS_3237 The system overview illustration presents one exemplary possibility of how the sensor communicates with other system components in the vehicle.

Illustration: System overview

RLS47_SPS_212 The sensor only provides information; the sensor itself cannot intervene directly with other actuators. The respective modules (e.g. light control or wiper control) must ensure that a safe state is entered in the event of the sensor information failing.

3.2.4 Interface specification 3.2.4.2 Connection of the sensor

RLS47_SPS_333 The sensor can be powered by the superordinate control unit (LIN - Master), respectively can be connected to a switched voltage.

RLS47_SPS_338 The responsible ECU switches off the voltage supply 5 seconds at the earliest after the LIN communication has stopped.

RLS47_SPS_334 The sensor can be powered with battery supply respectively connected to a permanently existing voltage (CL30).

3.2.4.4 Communication interface 3.2.4.4.1 LIN communication

RLS47_SPS_344 The sensor system must allocate a LIN interface for communication.

RLS47_SPS_340 All the exact timing requirements can be found in the LIN specification.

RLS47_SPS_352 At project commencement the customer provides the valid LDF (LIN definition file).

3.2.4.5 Windshield requirements 3.2.4.5.1 Transmittance and reflective properties

RLS47_SPS_3337 There are three ways of providing the factor of correction: 1. LIN signal: The factor of correction is generated on the basis of the screen samples provided by the customer and is archived inside the sensor. 2. LIN master: The factor of correction is generated on the basis of the screen samples provided by the customer and is archived inside the master. 3. The LIN master provides the sensor with 16 transmission values, and the sensor autonomously carries out the calculation.

RLS47_SPS_360 At project commencement, the customer provides Hella windshield sections of each windshield where a sensor will be mounted. Based on the windshield section, Hella will determine the transmission curve of the windshield.

RLS47_SPS_3338 The windscreens provided by the customer at project commencement and measured by Hella are defined in the "Hella customer's drawing". These windscreens are regarded as tested and compatible with the sensor. All windscreens released will be documented in the customer's drawing.

3.2.4.5.1.2 Climate comfort windshield (infrared-reflecting)

RLS47_SPS_366 When using infrared-reflecting windshields, the infrared-reflecting foil must be cut in the area of the rain sensor so that the transmission curve corresponds to the Hella windshield requirements. A windshield sections containing the cut out has to be provided by the customer.

3.2.4.5.1.4 Transmittance and reflective properties for the rain sensor

RLS47_SPS_374 The transmission spectrum of the windshield influences both the selection of the suitable wavelength range for the transmission diodes and the required electronic reinforcement of the circuit. The transmission of the windshield in the wavelength range of 800 nm - 1100 nm must not fall below 18 % and must not exceed 80 %. Deviating windshield transmission values must be necessarily agreed upon with Hella. The transmission limits must be also met by production tolerances and aging.

3.2.4.5.1.5 Transmittance and reflective properties for the light function(s)

RLS47_SPS_2886 The transmission spectrum of the windshield means for the ambient light sensor a minimum transmittance of 75% in the visible range (380...780nm) and for the front light sensor a minimum transmittance of 18% in the IR range (800...1100nm).

RLS47_SPS_383 The sensor position must not be in the transition area of the green/gray wedge (shade band).

3.2.4.5.5 Positioning of the sensor

RLS47_SPS_386 From our experience the distance between the sensor and the end of the wiper blade overpassing the sensor has to be at least DistanceOverwipe mm. Otherwise the performance of the rain sensor functionality especially at high vehicle speed could be decreased (false wipes, double wipes). If the minimum distance 30 mm cannot be assured an agreement with Hella and the releasing customer specialist department is essential.

RLS47_SPS_387 The distance between the sensor and the end of the wiper blade not passing the sensor has to be at least DistanceNOverwipe mm. If the minimum distance 50 mm cannot be assured an agreement with Hella and the releasing customer specialist department is essential.

RLS47_SPS_501 If there are water drops on the outside of the windshield in the sensor measuring range, the part of the light beam is decoupled in the area of the water drops (see image rain sensor). This reduces the amount of light absorbed by the receiver diodes. This change in light intensity is measured by the electronic evaluation unit. The wiping frequency is controlled depending on this evaluation.

RLS47_SPS_518 The calibration must be completed within 1.0 seconds.

RLS47_SPS_520 Note: If the conditions for the calibration on the windshield are created, it is essential that the windshield is clean and dry in the area of the measuring surface and the environmental temperature in the middle temperature range is (15 - 25 °C).

4.1.2.2.2 Rain channel adjustment 4.1.2.2.2.1 Adjustment to windscreen condition

RLS47_SPS_527 The rain sensor adapts permanently to the respective windshield state. A sudden change of the windshield state (e.g. through scratches on the windshield, stone impacts, residue of insects or soiling) is taken into account through corresponding adjustment routines. The sensor shall not request continuous wiping in this case.

4.1.2.3 Activation of the rain sensor

RLS47_SPS_541 The activation of the rain sensors automatic mode is done via a LIN signal (See ComDiag eg Klemme R).

RLS47_SPS_2751 Automatic Mode: In automatic mode the wipe requests are generated by the sensor dependent on the moisture/water situation on the windshield. The automatic mode could be selected by the driver by e.g. a switch. Manual Mode: In manual mode the wipe requests are generated dependent on the wiper lever position. In this case the sensor is in passive mode.

RLS47_SPS_542 Activation wiping is triggered as soon as it was changed to the automatic mode. The function can be disabled by parameter enable_activation_wipe_bt.

4.1.2.5 Wiping process 4.1.2.5.1 Parking position signal

RLS47_SPS_341 The timing of the parking information of the wiping motor is very important for the function of the sensor. Special attention regarding the park information timing must be paid during the function's development and testing.

RLS47_SPS_569 As soon as the wiper which passes the sensor leaves the parked position, the rain sensor has to be informed about this by a corresponding signal WiperPosition.

RLS47_SPS_570 As soon as the wiper which passes the sensor returns to the parked position, the sensor has to be informed about this by the corresponding signal WiperPosition being reset.

RLS47_SPS_572 The following minimum conditions are necessary for the functionality of the wiping process: The signal "wiper outside the parked position" reaches the rain sensor at least 100 ms before the sensor is wiped over by the wiper. The signal "wiper in the parked position" is only set after the wiper has wiped over the sensor twice. The signal "wiper in the parked position" is also put out at least once during continuous wiping (stage 1 or 2) if the wiper passes through the parked position.

RLS47_SPS_573 For wiper systems which have different parking and reversing positions for the wiper blades, an agreement with Hella and the releasing customer specialty department is essential.

RLS47_SPS_574 If the wiper blade which passes the sensor is not moved synchronously to the park position signal into/out of the park position, an agreement with Hella and the releasing customer specialty department is essential.

4.1.2.6 Wiper control

RLS47_SPS_584 When the rain sensor is activated, the wiper system is controlled according to the detected degree, type and frequency of wetting of the windshield.

RLS47_SPS_585 The sensor can put out the following wiper requests:

RLS47_SPS_1238 Single wiping processes (stageless interval pauses)

RLS47_SPS_1240 Continuous wipe in stage 1

RLS47_SPS_1241 Continuous wipe in stage 2

RLS47_SPS_1239 Multi-stage systems with max. MaxWipSteps steps. (MaxWipSteps = MWS_max_u8 - MWS_min_u8 + 1)

RLS47_SPS_586 The rain sensor must adjust the wiping behavior to the detected windshield states: • (wax) streaks • dirt • salt. The function has to be adjusted for typical situations for salt, dirt and streaks.

4.1.2.9 Splash detection

RLS47_SPS_627 The splash function is necessary for the following reason: The transitions to continuous wiping are usually carried out through rain intensity calculation. These (due to a state-controlled filter) are subject to an inertia which restricts the capacity to react in the case of a sudden wetting of the windshield, if no wiping or individual wiping was taking place when this occurs. A splash situation is represented by a sudden strong rain impact.

4.1.2.11 Dirt detection

RLS47_SPS_645 If the vehicles in front swirl up damp dirt, a wiping process is triggered according to the humidity - on account of the typical rain detection function. If this occurs often, it leads to the dirt being smeared. A dirty windshield leads to an increase in outcoupling during a wiping process (i.e. to a greater delta). To compensate for this, dirt detection is used to adapt the delta of the rain recognition function to the dirt situation, so that the rain recognition functions perfectly despite dirt on the windshield.

4.1.2.12 Salt detection

RLS47_SPS_1232 In the winter months, the windshield can become soiled by the use of de-icing salt. This soiling could trigger wiping processes. In order to prevent this, the sensitivity is adjusted by means of the salt detection so that the rain detection functions despite the salt on the windshield and to avoid the faulty wiping processes as much as possible.

4.1.2.13 Dew detection

RLS47_SPS_654 The dew detection shall avoid the wiping caused by invisible moisture on the windshield. Invisible moisture is not visible for the driver, but visible in the infrared measurement signal of the rain sensor.

4.1.2.14 Wiper start-up suppression

RLS47_SPS_658 The function wiper start-up suppression should prevent the windshield wiper to start if there is ice on the window which could damage the wipers. Such ice situations generally occur after a longer period of vehicle standstill in case of negative environmental temperatures.

4.1.3 Light function

RLS47_SPS_720 The light function must put out the request to switch on the light by using the communication interface depending on the following environmental respectively driving conditions:

RLS47_SPS_722 • Twilight • Darkness

RLS47_SPS_723 • Tunnel

RLS47_SPS_721 • Basement garage exit

4.1.3.7 Tunnel light

RLS47_SPS_786 Tunnel detection: Tunnel detection is based on the following sequence of light conditions: Front light value drops to a certain percentage value (parameter tun_front_adaptiv_u8) Ambient light value drops to a certain percentage value (parameter tun_front_adaptiv_u8) After a certain entry time tun_in_time_u8 the above conditions are checked again. If they are still being met, a tunnel is detected.

4.1.3.8 Underground parking garage exit

RLS47_SPS_797 Underground parking garage exit: A typical situation for this is described below: The car is started up in the dark and the light is switched on automatically. In order to prevent that the front light remains on for minutes after the exit from the garage, there has to be a quicker transition from Night to Day. This quicker path goes through the GarageExit state. Characteristic for an underground parking garage exit is the fast increase in light, both ambient and front light, within the starting distance (typically within the first 1000 meters after ignition on). If the sensor detects an underground parking garage exit, the system changes to the GarageExit state. This state is a purely waiting state (typically 5 seconds). If the light conditions for Day are detected within this state, then the system changes to the Day state when the waiting time has expired. Otherwise the Twilight state is entered.

4.1.3.11 Instrument lighting

4.1.4 Climate function 4.1.4.1 Solar sensor

RLS47_SPS_823 The solar sensor provides an additional reference variable for the air-conditioning system. This variable correlates with the solar radiation absorbed by the passengers. It mainly leads to passengers warming up, rather than to the vehicle interior heating up. This effect is not recorded by the interior temperature sensor. Using the information provided by the solar sensor, it is possible to influence the vehicle climate depending on the sun radiation in such a way that this undesired warming effect on the passengers by the sun is compensated.

RLS47_SPS_825 The solar sensor records the solar radiation acting on the passengers separately for the left and right sides (Solar_Driver_u8, Solar_Passenger_u8) of the vehicle.

4.1.4.1.2 Measuring and detection range of the solar sensor

RLS47_SPS_836 The sensor has to cover a measurement range between 0 W/m² to 1020 W/m² (global radiation according to DIN EN 60904-3).

4.1.4.2 Humidity function

RLS47_SPS_848 The humidity sensor delivers two reference variables for the control of the air conditioning. The relative humidity and the temperature are measured on the inner surface of the windshield. In case of high relative humidity it is possible that condensation is formed on the windshield. With the information from the humidity sensor it is possible to regulate the vehicle air conditioning depending on the relative humidity and temperature on the inner windshield so that the unwanted condensation on the windshield is counteracted before the humidity from the passengers can be observed.

RLS47_SPS_855 For the application inside the vehicle there are some recommendations: · A good air circulation under the sensor cover is necessary for the humidity and temperature measurements. Ventilation slits in the sensor cover should be made as wide as possible at the bottom and top of the design cover. · The climate sensor should be placed in the lower range of the sensor cover and as close as possible to the ventilation slits. · When a camera is additionally placed under the sensor cover, this should be placed above the sensor so that the heat of the camera can be dissipated through the upper air ventilation slits.

4.1.5 HUD lighting

RLS47_SPS_877 In vehicles equipped with head-up display (HUD), the brightness of the image projected onto the windshield is controlled by an external light sensor. Following this sensor is named HUD sensor. The reception characteristics of this HUD sensor is changed compared to the characteristics of the front light sensor. The HUD sensor detects the brightness in the immediate front area of the vehicle. The aim is the acquisition by means of sensors as input of the control of the contrast/representation brightness of a head up display concerning the vehicle information.

RLS47_SPS_3339 A opening angle of 8° (± 1°) must be implemented for the HUD function.
