    Dear Participants,

    the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is celebrating its an-

    niversary, and youll be at the party!

    When the starting shot was red at the premier inthe Grunewald Forest on October 13, 1974, not oneo the 286 participants could have imagined howthis event would develop over the coming decades.

    The course made the leap into the city in 1981. Inthe ollowing years, the BERLIN-MARATHON develo-ped into one o the largest road races in the world.In 2003, it moved into the heart o the city. Thecourse with the start and nish between the Bran-denburg Gate and the Victory Column (Siegessule)draws 40,000 runners and 8,000 skaters every year.

    This programme includes all o the important in or-mation you need to know about the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON: How do I get to the starting area?What all is included in the supporting programme?

    What ood and drinks will be provided along thecourse, and how do I recognize the pacemakers? This participant in ormation magazine will answerall o these and more questions.     The traditional Break ast Run one day be ore the race is nowa regular part o the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON.Everyone who participates in this event will get a taste o the upcoming marathon atmosphere on Sunday. Amidst a

    un atmosphere, the throng o runners will leave the Char-lottenburg Palace at9:30 a.m. or a nice and easy jog tothe Olympic Stadium, carrying ags rom their clubs, cities,and countries, and playing instruments.This is no time or over-ambition, but rather a chance to simplyhave un loosening up your legs. As a special highlight, the 6 kmcourse will end directly on the blue track in the Olympic Stadi-um. A ter this early-morning achievement, you will have earneda proper power break ast. Just the right thing or lling up your

    energyreserves! Now is the time to preserve your strength andstart your mental preparation or the marathon race.

    The atmosphere in Berlin is world-class, as well. The runnersare li ted by the musical support along the attractive citycourse with about 80 bands putting on their own musicmarathon and are carried to the nish by countless specta-tors. It is an un orgettable experience or every marathon an!

    Entrance to the Starting areaNEWFor security reasons, the start area will only beopen to participants with ofcial race numbers and

    upon presenting your wristbandwhich will be tied toyour wrist when etching your race documents. Thestart area will be opened at 6:30 a.m.

    Please say goodbye to your riends and relatives be-orehand. The start/ nish is only open to participants

    (no accompanying persons).

    In order to avoid cramming the entrances and having to walklong distances, we recommend that you choose where you enterthe start area according to the location o your clothing drop-o .

    In the extended starting area between the Reichstag and theFederal Chancellery there are changing tents and sufcienttoilets available. Please use them!

    Clothing Drop-o You must drop o your clothing by 8:30 a.m. (at the latest) atthe tent allocated or your race number. Please only use theclothing bag, which you received with your race materials,you will receive a sticker with your race number on it to stickon the bag.

    Do not leave any valuable or breakable items in the clothingbag.We recommend you to take your valuables along,such as hotel card, car key, etc., with you or leavethem with riends or amily. The organiser is not lia-ble or any damage or loss o your items.

    Changing tents and toiletsPlease see the start/ nish map on page 14 15 or the loca-tion o the changing tents and toilets.The changing tent and toilets with wheelchair access arelocated between the start and the Siegessule (Victory Co-lumn) in the direction o the race. Un ortunately there havebeen repeated the ts o shoes with the chips attached romthe changing tents. Please do not leave your shoes unattended!!!

    Race NumbersOnly entrants with an ofcial race number or the BMWBERLIN-MARATHON 2013 and a duly tied wristband wil

    permitted to compete in the race.Race numbers are nottrans erable.

    There is anEMERGENCY PASSPORTon the back o yourrace number. For your own sa ety and to assure prompt assistance, please ll in your personal data.

    Please include your address in Berlin (hotel, etc.),room and telephone number. Please insert an emer-gency contact person including his/her telephonenumber.

    The number or all emergencies is:112 (Fire department), Keyword:MARATHONYour race number DOES NOT provide or ree transportaon the public transportation network (except on race day

    rom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. i you drop out o the race).

    Bibs must be worn on the chest so that your numberis clearly visible. They may not be altered in any way.

    Do not alter any letters or characters that appear onyour bib. Any orm o alteration will result in disqua-li cation!

    Be on the alert or runners without race numbers who maytry to mingle in with the ofcial competitors at the start.Such runners serve only to adulterate the per ormance -gures o the ofcial runners, and they take un air advantageo the support and aid services intended only or registereentrants.

    TimekeepingNo chip no timekeeping!The timekeeping will be kept solely with the ChampionChip

    Please asten the chip securely to your shoelaces (notwith metal) or your time will not be kept.Your net run-ning time can only be measured i you step on the contactmats laid out on the starting and nishing lines. Likewise,you must step on all mats laid out en route.Intermediatetime checks you will be disquali ed i your intermediatetimes are not recorded.

    The hire charges or the chip (6 euros) were paid upon regis-tration. I a chip is not returned a ter the event, an additional25 euros will be billed to your account.

    You must return your undamaged chip by 5 p.m.(atthe latest) on the day o the event in the clothing drop-o area. For technical reasons, the start-time recording or the

    ChampionChip will be switched o 30 minutes a ter the starto the race is signalled. Later starts are not possible.

    Personal Re reshmentsI you pre er, you can drop o your own personal re resh-ments or the various re reshment points. Please deliver yourcontainers (labelled clearly with your name and race number NO GLASS!) by 7:30 a.m. at the Personal Re reshmentsstand (Gate 5, Otto-von-Bismarck-Allee).

    Nonetheless, we would like to state that with thegreat number o individual containers it may be dif-cult to nd your own items at the re reshment points.

    Warm-UpThere will be an organised group warm-up to music between8:00and8:30 a.m. (block H). Stretching and loosening upwill help you to reach your running temperature and reducethe chance o injury.

    Starting Block DivisionThe start will be divided into 8 designated blocks accordingto the personal best times submitted. The lettersA Honyour race number show which block you are to go to. All

    runners who are par-ticipating in their rstmarathon will be in

    the last block. Pleaseollow the helpers in-structions to assure asmooth start.

    PACEMAKEREach starting block will have pacemaker to help set the tempo. They will be carrying balloons and can be identi ed btheir yellow shirts with the texts:PACE 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:15, or 4:30 Start

    NEWThe start or the runners and power walkers will takeplace at 8:45 a.m. at the Kleiner Stern, on both lanes o thboulevard Strae des 17. Juni .There will be balloons when you enter the starting block.Please let yours go when the rst starting gun is red! Themarathon starts in3 waves.

    Medical aid along the courseUp until 15 km there will mostly be mobile units on duty.They can be identi ed through the labelDOCTORor

    MEDICAL SERVICE.

    From 15 km to 36 km, there will be so-called acci-dentassistance stations every 3 km. Medical assistance will beavailable every kilometre (on oot or by vehicle).From 36km to the nish, there will be accident assistant stationsevery kilometre.

    Each station will be manned with at least one doctorand will be marked with a green cross (First Aid). The doctoon duty have the right and the responsibility to remove any par-ticipants with signs o injury or excessive strain rom the race

    I you require medical assistance, please walk to thenext station or contact our medical personnel on the course.I you have to drop out due to an injury, you can wait or thbus at the end o the eld or ride the subway to the nish

    rom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or ree. The race number is valid travel, but only or those who have dropped out. Massage

    Starting at km 25, you can stop to get a massage every 5kilometers.

    Use caution on the course!No wheeled vehicles (cars, bikes, or motorcycles) will be alowed to accompany the runners along the course. It is notallowed to use stroller, roller skates, skateboards or otherwheeled devices (with the exception o wheelchairs and handcycles). Animals are also not allowed on the marathon course

    Headphones at the marathon: To hear the warningsigns rom your ellow runners or rom helpers at the sidethe track wed kindly ask o you to run without music headphones. Dont miss the cheers rom the spectators and thebands.We would like to point out that the IAAF prohibits headphones beiworn during an athletics competition and may otherwise result in disqualifcation.

    Video and Timekeeping control pointsThere arevideo control pointson the course. Please makesure that your race number is clearly visible on your chest

    throughout the entire race.

    There are alsotimekeeping controls (approx. 5 km) onthe course. You must run across all contact mats to provethat you kept to the correct course otherwise you will bedisquali ed.

    Grandstands and Video ScreenStanding room-only grandstands will line both sides o thecourse be ore the nish, which are open to everyone. This isa great way to ollow your riends and relatives on the largevideo screen when they cross the nish line.

    FinishThe nish is on Strae des 17. Juni in ront o the SovietMonument and will remain open until 3:45 p.m. Your timewill be registered when you cross the nish line (the contactmats).

    Please do not remain standing on the nish line, butcontinue slowly to the end o the nish area. This is better oryour heart and circulation and will help you to not suddenlycollapse.

    I you are eeling ill, please make use o the medicalcare available.

    Then you will receive your medal and warming oil. Pleasemove on rom this area toward the re reshments, wheredrinks such as non-alcoholic ERDINGER beer, ruit andcookies await you or take away. Please throw your used

    sponges in the containers provided. I you eel ill, pleause the medical assistance provided. Students rom theBerlin schools o physiotherapy await you or massages

    loosen up your sti muscles. They are there to help you, buremember there are other runners who would like to enjoytheir helping hands too.

    Then go to pick up your clothing bag.The clothing pick-up is only possible in the nish area until 4:00 p.m. upon presentation o your race number. Alclothing bags remaining will be at thelost and oundbooth until 5:00 p.m., or they can be picked rom Mondayon, October 1, at the organisational ofce at Hanns-Braun-Str./Adlerplatz, 14053 Berlin.

    ShowersShowers with warm water will be available or you in a designated area.

    Do not return to the nish area a ter you have pi-cked up your clothing and have showered. Pleasearrange to meet with other runners outside o the

    nish area. Spectating will also not be permitted wi-thin the blocked o area, so as not to hinder the event.

    Spectator crossing at the nish areaIt will only be possible to cross the marathon course in the

    nish area at the special crossing at Pariser Platz. (See themap o the start/ nish area on page 14 15) Please heedthe instructions o the helpers.

    Family reunion areaYou will be able to meet up with your amily, who understandably cannot be in the immediate nish area in the amilyreunion area on the connecting roads between the Reichstagand the Brandenburg Gate, at the sign with the rst lettero your last name (see the map o the start/ nish area onpage 14 15).
