Dedicated t o

EMIL LUDWIG SEIBERT, Walhausen, Saar

whose research on the Seiberts

i n Germany covered 4 centuries

Bflrgermeister, I n

gründen v o r z e i t i g pensioniert, und meine E l t e r n zogen i n

den Heimatort meines Vaters, nach Walhausen, wo mein Vater

bis zu seinem Lebensende b l i e b .

Er hatte sich schon früher mit der Familienforschung

befasst, aber erst nach seiner Pensionierung hat er seine

Hauptarbeiten auf diesem Gebiet g e l e i s t e t und fa s t jede f r e i e

Minute mit seinen alten Akten und Urkunden zugebracht.

Er hat eine Eeihe heimatgeschichtlicher Fakten meist i n

Zeitungsartikeln veröffentlicht. Die Geschichte, die ich Ihnen

schickte, i s t meines Wissens die umfangreichste seiner Ar-

beiten. Er stand mit einer Beihe von anderen Heimat" und Fami

l i e n - f orschern ståndig i n Verbindung, und wenn er I h r Interesse

für sein Arbeiten noch erlebt hatte, hatte er sich sicher

sehr darüber gefreut. Er starb 6,10.1960 i n Saarburgj er wurde

auf dem Friedhof i n Walhausen begraben, so wie auch meine Mut

t e r (I967). Hannelore Wilhelmus (seine Tochter)

Introduction

This i s the story of Jacob Seibert (d l ? 6 l Pa), his brother, Wendel

(d 1740 Pa); and t h e i r second cousins, Jacob Seibert (d 1758 W Va), his

brother, Wendel (d 1802 W Va). The f i r s t Jacob and Wendel were sons of

Jacob (I678-I726) of Eitzweiler, Saarlandj the second Jacob and Wendel

were sons of Christopher (b 1682 Ei t z w e i l e r , l i v i n g 1?10 Wolfersweiler,

d 1732 Sötern). See map on page 9 and ancestral chart on page 28. A l l

four with one mother and possibly some sister s landed at Philådelphia

i n the f a l l of 1738 and went to the Tulpehocken region i n what i s now

Berks County, Pennsylvania.

When the w r i t e r published THE SEIBERT FAMILY i n 1959 he was aware

only of Jacob (d 1761 Pa) and Wendel (d 1802 W Va). These were the two

families w r i t t e n up i n the Seibert RECORD, a manuscript work by William

H. Seibert (1831-1915) and John R. Seibert (1834-1922) of Pekin, I l l i n o i s ,

I903. The Pekin book said that Jacob of Pa ml 1739 (Mary) Elizabeth

Theiss, m2 (date unknown) Susanna Schütz. The w r i t e r did not question

this. In the spring of 1958 he wrotet The r e l a t i o n of Wendel to Jacob i s not known. They came over i n the same ship, October 25-I738. They s e t t l e d i n the Tulpehocken region. Their sons went to Maryland. Wendel died i n Martinsburg, West V i r g i n i a i n 1802. They may have been cousins. The name Wendel does not appear i n the Jacob branch...Wendel was born cl720.

I n the f a l l of 1958 the w r i t e r found i n German church records from

Wolfersweiler parish (Koblenz) the record that Jacob (d 1761 Pa) was

baptized March 2-1716 and had a brother, Wendel, baptized May 15-1721.

Since Wendel was an uncommon name, he assumed that Wendel b 1721 was the

one who died i n W Va i n 1802. He had not discovered the Sötern Wendel

and Jacob Seibert, sons of Christopher ( S t o f f e l ) Seibert.

As a r e s u l t of l e t t e r s from David L. Greene of Demorest GA and Charles

B. Beverage of Richmond VA, and a f u r t h e r search i n Germany, he has

found that Wendel (b 1721) died i n 1740 i n Tulpehocken} that Wendel (d

1802 WVa) was a second cousin of Jacob (d 1761 Pa). Their relationships

are shown here i

The Wendel Seiberts

Mr. Greene found an estate i n the Philadelphia County courthouse

(where a number of Tulpehocken estates were s e t t l e d before the formation

of Berks County i n 1752) dated January 3-1741 (Administration Book D,

page 152, #127) f o r Wendel Seibert, "brother of" Jacob Seibert. Christian

Lauer was a bondsman. The estate was small (L 6-12-4 = $ 17.65). Wendel,

a t a i l o r , was l i k e l y single. Jacob made his mark i n place of a signature.

(He did the same when he landed Oct. 25-1738.) This Pennsylvania Jacob

(d I76I) was a shoemaker. The other Jacob (d 1758) could sign his name.

He was a farmer. The West V i r g i n i a Wendel was a blacksmith.

Mr. Beverage reported an Augusta County, V i r g i n i a estate i n which

Wendel Seibert i n 1758 was l i s t e d as next-of-kin (brother) t o Jacob (d

1758). A study of Pennsylvania church records showed that i t was Jacob

of West V i r g i n i a who married (Mary) Elizabeth Theiss February 26-1739.

The Pennsylvania Jacob married Susanna Schütz June 7-1741. Both marriages

were performed by J. Caspar Stoever. See Egle's Notes and Queries AVI896.

This s h i f t s the ancestral l i n e of Wendel (d 1802 W Va) from«

I t was f u r t h e r found that a s i s t e r of Jacob (W Va) and Wendel (W Va)

married Christian Lauer. (See the baptism i n 1744 of Magdalena Lauer.)

I n Lauer's w i l l i n 1786 Wendel i s called "brother-in-law". Christian

Lauer on January 29-1739 was married by J. Caspar Stoever to (Anna)

Catharine " S t e r f " , . l i k e l y misread f o r "Steff" . She was widow (Anna)

Catharine Stephan (Steffan). I n Germany she married Jacob Stephan May

22-1731. Jacob landed at Philadelphia i n 1738. So STEPHAN became

STEFFAN was taken f o r STEFFIN and feminine ending " i n " assumed. This led

to STEFF and STERF.

This means that two corrections should be made to THE SEIBERT FAMILY

(1959)«

(1) Wendel d 1802 W Va was a son of Christopher of Sötern, not

of Jacob of Eitzweiler;

(2) Jacob d I76I Pa married only Susanna Schiltz, who was the mother

of a l l his children.

I t i s unfortunate that these wrrors were made. I t i s a most unusual coin

cidence that 2 JacobnWftndel sets came at the same time from the same

place to the same place.

Gathering: Data

The story of gathering the data f o r a family h i s t o r y l i k e t h i s i s an

int e r e s t i n g one.

After an unsuccessful attempt i n the early 1950's to locate the v i l l a g e

i n Germany from which the Seiberts had come i n 1738, and to locate the

Pekin Seibert records, i n I958 everything started t o work out f o r the best.

A l e t t e r from Dr. Braun of Kaiserslautern t o l d of locating the Seiberts

at Wolfersweiler. A l e t t e r to the pastor there suggested w r i t i n g t o

Koblenz f o r the records before 1824. Correspondence with Koblenz brought

30 pages of data with a photostat of the baptism of Jacob Seibert who

came to Pennsylvania i n 1738 (designated here as Jacob d I76I Pa). I n

addition, Dr. Hirschfeld of Koblenz found a h i s t o r y of the Seiberts

w r i t t e n i n Germany. I t took several years to get a copy of t h i s book.

The Pfalzische Landesbibliothek at Speyer found a reference to the work

of the author i n the Saarbrücken Zeitung (St. Wendel). The editor of

t h i s newspaper was able to supply the name and address of the wife of

the deceased author. The w r i t e r was able to borrow from the author's dau

ghter the manuscript h i s t o r y .

Trying again at Pekin, Mr. Roy Seibert Preston was located. He made

available as a loan the Seibert RECORD, notes gathered from 1850 to 1930.

More data from Berks County and Maryland were supplied by Mr. Heffner of

Reading and Mr. Piper of Hagerstown. The E. and R, Library at Lancaster

supplied microfilms of öhurch records.

The next project was to f i n d out more about Wendel Seibert, who came

on the same ship as Jacob. The Pekin notes mentioned Martinsburg, West

V i r g i n i a . At the courthouse there the w i l l of Wendel was found. At the

l o c a l l i b r a r y a chance meeting with the son of Mrs. Howard K. Brown

showed that she had a complete record of the Wendel Seibert family.

Herr Schmidt of Wolfersweiler, whose mother was a Seibert, sent pic

tures of Wolfersweiler and E i t z w e i l e r . Members of the American Seibert

family v i s i t e d the old church. Of the 50 names on the Wolfersweiler War

Memorial 1939-1945, f i v e are Seibert, 2 Küntzer, 7 Gisch, 5 Schweigs•

the same names as i n 1738. I n 1958 Wolfersweiler with a population of

II50 had 18 Seibert famLTies; Eitzweiler with 250 had 7 f a m i l i e s .

A search at Speyer revealed Seibert records from the Kusel parish

going back to 1569. THE SEIBERT FAMILY could be w r i t t e n . I t was com

pleted i n 1959. What has happened since then i s t o l d i n the next section.

The 1959 book used two unpublished manuscripts!

A GENEALOGICAL RECORD OF THE SEIBERT FAMILY, described above? and

DIE ALTESTEN GSSCHLECTER DES AMTES NOHFELDEN by Emil Ludwig Seibert,

also mentioned above. The l a t t e r includes many families of which Seibert

i s one. The w r i t e r placed a copy of Herr Seibert's 175-page work i n

the l i b r a r y of the E. and R. H i s t o r i c a l Society at Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Also landing October 25-I738 was Wendel Seibert, brother of JSP.

Perhaps he was i l l or was overlooked because of age. Karl von Frank

found i n German records that Wendel Seibert of H i r s t e i n l e f t f o r Ame

at a baptism October 31-1737.

On September 3-1739 David Fortune landed at Philadelphia. His wife

was a cousin of Jacob Seibert (Pa). Others could no doubt be found

by f u r t h e r study. David Fortune's brother-in-law, Jacob B r i t z i u s landed

September 15-1748. Bernhard Wommer's father and brother landed on Octo

ber 7-1749. I n 1719 i n Eitzweiler were nine families 1

The t r i p to a port i n Holland took 4 to 6 weeks. After an undetermined

wait the ship took o f f f o r America, with a b r i e f stop at a B r i t i s h port.

The crossing of the A t l a n t i c took 8 t o 12 weeks. There was much hardshipi

illness, death, hunger, storms, lack of water, crowded conditions.

But f i n a l l y Philadelphia was reached, the auth o r i t i e s granted approval

and the weary Germans headed f o r Tulpehocken and friends and r e l a t i v e s .

These are some of the family groups that l e f t Wolfersweiler1

The Seiberts upon landing at Philadelphia proceeded to the Tulpehocken

region of (now) Berks County, Pennsylvania, then Lancaster County. Here

were r e l a t i v e s and fri e n d s . There was a happy reunion. This v a l l e y had

been s e t t l e d i n I723 by a colony of Germans from the Albany (NY) region.

Jacob Seibert (JSW) (son of Christopher) "farmer" married Elizabeth

Theiss i n 1739. He received a t r a c t of land i n Bethel Township from the

Perms a month a f t e r his marriage. Jacob Seibert (JSP) (son of Jacob)

"shoemaker" married widow Susanna Schütz i n 1741. By 1?48 farmer Jacob

had gone to the South Branch of the Potomac, now Pendleton County, West

V i r g i n i a . Shoemaker Jacob stayed i n Tulpehocken, where he died i n I 7 6 I .

Wendel (son of Jacob) " t a i l o r " died i n Tulpehocken l a t e i n 1740.

Wendel (son of Christopher) "blacksmith" l i v e d i n Bethel Township, g e t t i n g

a land grant i n 1755. I n 1796 he moved to Martinsburg, West V i r g i n i a ,

where he died i n 1802. Bernhard Seibert went to what i s now Shenandoah

County, V i r g i n i a sometime before 1750.

To the South

The f i r s t known Seibert t o leave Tulpehocken f o r the south was Jacob

(son of Christopher), who i n 1748 went to what i s now Pendleton County,

West V i r g i n i a on the South Branch of the Potomac River. (Bernhard Seibert

was i n what i s now Shenandoah County, V i r g i n i a by 1750.) A group of Ger

mans went from Tulpehocken t o the South Branch. Among them were Henry

Lorentz, Matthias Theiss I I I and ( a f t e r 1750) Nicholas Haffner. Their

relationship i s shown here 1

Jacob Seibert (W Va) bought a 210-acre farm on May 21-1755, the same

day as Nicholas Haffner bought one adjoining. Indian attacks led to the

k i l l i n g of Henry Lorentz May 16-1757; and on A p r i l 28-1758 Indians at

tacked Fort Seybert. Among those k i l l e d were Captain Jacob Seibert (Sey-

b e r t ) , his wife, his mother. How poorly America treated them! Six of his

children were captured by Indians 1 (approximate ages)

Nicholas 15, Margaret 12, Catharine 10, George 8, Henry 14, Elizabeth 2,

Nicholas was freed i n 1761 and went to Frederick County, Maryland. About

1777 he moved to (now) Highland County, V i r g i n i a , a few miles south of

Fort Seybert. The other children were freed i n 1764.

Augusta County, V i r g i n i a records show that on March 12-1758 (Jo)hanna

Seibert Lorentz signed t h i s statement 1

I do hereby empower my son, Jacob Sivers t o administer the estate of Henry Lorens deceased. W i l l Book 2, page 226,

English clerks always had trouble s p e l l i n g German surnames. On March 15

Jacob was named administrator. On November I6-I758 a f t e r the death of

Daniel Smith. Letters had already been granted on May 18-1758 to Daniel

Smith i n the Jacob Seibert estate. Both the Lorentz and Seibert estates

were f i n a l i z e d August I 9 - I 7 6 I . From the Lorentz estate money was paid

to Wendel Seibert; from the Seibert estate to Christian Lauer.

Augusta County records show the name of Nicholas Håffner i n the estate

papers of Jacob Seibert. He l i k e l y married a s i s t e r or step-sister of

Jacob Seibert. Håffner was naturalized i n Pennsylvania September 25-I750,

i n V i r g i n i a May I8-I762. His name appears i n the records u n t i l June 20-

I769. On that date his w i l l , w r i t t e n A p r i l 5, was probated. Appraisers

were Mathhias Dice (Theiss) and George Dice (Theiss). Elizabeth, the wi

dow of Nicholas, returned to Pennsylvania and on June 30-1770 married

Christian Lauer. Lauer's f i r s t wife was Elizabeth's s i s t e r or stepsister.
