LoC Flickr Pilot Project• Project Objectives:
• increase awareness by sharing content with people who enjoy images but might not visit the LoC’s Web site
• gain understanding how social tagging and community input could benefit the libraries and users
• gain experience participating in emerging Web communities that would be interested in the kinds of material in the Library’s collections

• two collections of historical photographs (~4000 images) covering a breath of subjects, locations, and time periods
• minor investments (no staff member ever worked full time on this project); 222 hours of technical programming work; $24.95 for Flickr Pro Account
LoC Flickr Pilot Project• Project Outcome (Jan - Oct 2008):
• 10.4 million views on Flickr
• 79% of 4,615 photos have been made “favorite”
• 7,166 comments were left on 2,873 photos by 2,562 unique Flickr accounts
• 67,176 tags were added by 2,518 unique Flickr accounts.
• Average monthly visits to [corresponding LoC collection] pages rose 20% over the five month period of January-May 2008, compared to the same period in 2007
“This project significantly increased the reach of Library content and demonstrated the many kinds
of creative interactions that are possible when people can access collections within their own Web
communities.”

• über offene Schnittstellen (z.B.: APIs)
• möglichst ohne technische, rechtliche, oder finanzielle Barrieren
• Public Domain (z.B.: CC0) wurde zum de-facto Standard für Metadaten
• Content (ohne copyright Beschränkung) wird in zunehmendem Maße ebenfalls unter offenen Lizenzen (z.b., CC BY) bzw. in der Public Domain publiziert
• Open Data ist auch mit relativ geringem (technischen) Aufwand realisierbar
• ALLES offen, ALLES frei?
