1. Die Republik Marshallinseln (marshallesischAolepn Aorkin
Maje ) ist ein ozeanischerInselstaat im westlichen Pazifischen
Ozean. Der Staat umfasst die gleichnamige Inselgruppe,die zu
Mikronesien gehrt. Die Marshallinseln bestehen aus zwei fast
parallel verlaufendenInsel- beziehungsweise Atollketten: Die
Ratak-Kette (Sonnenaufgangsinseln) mit 14 Atollenund zwei Inseln im
Osten sowie die Ralik-Kette (Sonnenuntergangsinseln) mit 15
Atollenund drei Inseln im Westen.Zu den Inselketten gehren zusammen
rund 1225 grere und kleinere Inseln sowie 870Riffe, die sich ber
ein Gebiet von knapp 2 Mio. km im mittleren Pazifik erstrecken.
DieLandflche von insgesamt 181 km ragt im Mittel rund 2 Meter ber
den Meeresspiegelhinaus.Das Klima ist feucht und hei mit einer
Regenzeit von Mai bis November. Die Inseln werdengelegentlich von
Taifunen erfasst.Zwei Drittel der Bevlkerung leben auf den Inseln
des Majuro-Atolls und auf Ebeye. Dieanderen Inseln sind wegen
fehlender Arbeits- und Entwicklungsmglichkeiten nur dnnbesiedelt
oder unbewohnt.Hauptstadt ist die Gemeinde (Local Government
Council , frher municipality ) Majuro, diedem gleichnamigen Atoll

country is part of thelarger island group of Micronesia, with the
population of 68,480 peoplespread out over 24 low-lying coral
atolls, comprising 1,156 individualislands and islets. The islands
share maritime boundaries with theFederated States of Micronesia to
the west, Wake Island to the north,Kiribati to the south-east, and
Nauru to the south. The most populousatoll is Majuro, which also
acts as the capital. From 1946 to 1958, as thesite of the Pacific
Proving Grounds, the U.S. tested 67 nuclear weaponsin the Marshall
Islands,including the largest nuclear test the U.S. everconducted,
Castle Bravo.In 1956, the United States Atomic EnergyCommission
regarded the Marshall Islands as by far the mostcontaminated place
in the world.
