Der Brexit und die Sehnsucht nach dem alten Nationalstaat sind Zeichen für den Niedergang des Westens.

Fassen Sie den folgenden Artikel zusammen indem Sie die unterstrichenen Textstellen sinngemäß ins Englische übertragen. Erstellen Sie hierfür einen zusammenhängenden Text im Umfang von etwa 150 Wörtern.

Des Albtraums erster Teil

Es ist nicht tiefschwarzer britischer Humor, es ist nicht Monty Python, sondern Boris Johnson und David Cameron, härteste politische Realität also, eine ziemliche Katastrophe. Die Mehrheit in Großbritannien hat sich für den Austritt aus der EU entschieden. Angesichts der ökonomischen, politischen und militärischen Größe des Landes wird dies eine große Lücke schlagen und die Union schrumpfen lassen. Europa wird daran nicht zugrunde gehen, und was aus Großbritannien werden wird, weiß zur Stunde wohl kaum jemand. Bleibt das Land zusammen oder werden die Schotten gehen? Hat der 23. Juni [2016] den selbstverschuldeten Niedergang einer der dynamischsten Volkswirtschaften der EU eingeleitet? War es das mit der Weltfinanzmetropole London? Der Austritt Großbritanniens ist ein bis dato einmaliger Vorgang. […] Die eigentlichen Ursachen für die Ablehnung Europas reichen tief: die Wiederkehr des Nationalismus und der Mythen von einer goldenen Vergangenheit der Nationalstaaten, ethnisch und politisch homogen und ganz ohne die Zwänge der Kompromissmaschine namens Brüssel, ohne Globalisierung, von der zwar die Mehrheit der Europäer in ihren Sozialstaaten sehr gut lebt, sie gleichwohl aber grässlich findet. […]Die innere Kraft der Idee von der europäischen Einheit, die auf den Desastern des 20. Jahrhunderts gründete, scheint sich erschöpft zu haben, jetzt träumt man wieder vom goldenen Zeitalter des Nationalstaats. […] Die Umkehrung der positiven Vision Europa zugunsten des Mythos von einer goldenen Vergangenheit der Nationalstaaten ist nicht nur geschichtsvergessen, sondern auch ein Symptom des europäischen Niedergangs. Der Aufstieg der großen Schwellenländer wie China und Indien wird mit dem Niedergang des alten Westens assoziiert […].Zuerst und vor allem wird Millionen von Unionsbürgern klargemacht werden müssen, wo die wirkliche Macht in der Union liegt: nicht in Brüssel, sondern bei den nationalen Regierungen. Wofür wird Brüssel nicht alles verantwortlich gemacht: für die Globalisierung, die Zuwanderung, Sozialabbau, Jugendarbeitslosigkeit, Demokratiedefizit und vieles mehr. Es sind aber vor allem die nationalen Regierungen, die dafür die Verantwortung tragen. Sie haben auch die EU bisher wirksam daran gehindert, effizienter zu handeln. Noch ist es Zeit zur Umkehr, noch. Oder müssen erst Donald Trump in den USA und Marine Le Pen in Frankreich gewählt werden, um nach dem Brexit den dreifachen Albtraum zu vollenden?

The majority of people in Great Britain has decided to leave the EU. This will leave a huge gap and the Union will be smaller as a result. Never before has a country decided to leave the EU. The actual reasons for the rejection of Europe are: a re-emerging nationalism and the myth of nation states, which are ethnically and politically homogeneous and not having to follow orders from Brussels at all.The notion/idea of European unity seems to have lost its appeal. And the rise of major emerging nations like China or India is associated with the decline of the West.Brussels is blamed for / held responsible for globalization, immigration, less social security, youth unemployment and a lack of democracy. However, up until now it has been the local governments that have prevented the EU from acting more efficiently.

Composition 1

Social media has become a mainstream way of communication. However, ignorant and even hateful posts on a variety of subjects have become commonplace.

Should they be censored? Discuss.

Lösungsvorschlag 1:

Tweets and posts have taken over our way of staying and getting in touch with ‘friends’. There is no denying that social media is a great tool for communicating. However the downsides must not be ignored, such as slander, bullying and hateful posts and nowadays even fake news. But do they justify censorship?

First of all, censorship would infringe upon freedom of speech. This basic right is indispensable for a democracy and an open society. The fact that the proposal intends to stop hateful and ignorant posts does not, in my opinion, justify the loss of free speech, which is much more valuable. There are other legal ways of prosecuting and hopefully stopping hateful posts. In the end it is the readers who just have to ignore and thus ‘delete’ them.

Furthermore, we should take into consideration that censorship might cure the symptom but not the root of the problem. Censoring and monitoring social media might, in the short term, end hateful and ignorant posts, but people will find a way to dodge the censors next time around. It would therefore take a fundamental rethink of values in the minds of social media users to put an end to ignorant and hateful posts for good.

On the other hand, we should not ignore how damaging such hateful and ignorant posts can be for users. Bullying, spreading false news, and slander on social media can not only be annoying to those who are targeted, but it can even drive people to commit suicide. Sickening posts can also remain on the internet. It is not always easy to completely delete them. They could not only influence the social environment of a person, but also their career.

A clear rejection of the idea of censorship is the best solution. It might be a short-term, fix but the price to be paid – the end of free speech – is too high.

Are we in danger of losing control of our lives?

Lösungsvorschlag 2:

Just watching TV commercials shows how far automation at home has developed. You can tell ALEXIA what you want to be done and the machine recognizes this. Via smartphone you can control the blinds at home or you can be reminded that your refrigerator needs to be replenished with certain items. These are the first steps to an automated future. Yet, what are the risks of such a development?

First of all, many novels have been written outlining a dystopia where automation has affected human life negatively. In Disney’s WALL-E, for example, humans have become obese and feeble due to a reliance on an automated lifestyle. Is the conclusion that home automation – and this applies to driverless cars as well – can lead to a dependency on machines, a life full of comfort, inertness, and an unhealthy lifestyle? It sounds far-fetched at the moment, but there is no denying that automation in many fields is in full swing.

Furthermore, there is no doubt that all these machines and devices are vulnerable to outside forces. There have been reports of hackers who have infiltrated complex systems, as was the case with the NHS, causing a lot of damage and thereby even endangering people. While a hacker attacking a refrigerator or the heating system at home is more a nuisance than a danger, taking control of a driverless car, bus or train could be incredibly dangerous.

Despite these negative factors, the benefits of more intelligent technology in our lives should be acknowledged. Intelligent systems driving our vehicles could improve road safety: they could help to reduce traffic jams and much more. Intelligent home technology and automation could help with monotonous household chores. It could deter burglars and make us feel safer at home. All of these examples would not necessarily lead to us having less control over our lives. On the contrary, it would save time, would heighten our comfort, and allow for more time spent enjoying life, meeting new people, etc.

In a nutshell, home automation and more intelligent machinery are not without risk, but in the end it is people themselves who will decide how much they want to depend on technology and not be turned into empty-headed couch potatoes.
