A. Pasha Caratheodory, Konstantinopel

1 .,Nas.r al-Dn al-T.us, Abu Djafar Muh ammad ibn Muh. ammad ibn al-H.asan, oneof the best-known and most influential figures in Islamic intellectual history [Seyyed Hossein NasrinDSBvol. 13, p. 508],
born on 17 February AD 1201 in T.us in the northeastern Persian province
of Khurasan and died in Baghdad on 25 June 1274. He was a preeminent figure in medieval Islamic
history, being a major participant in both political and intellectual life during a century that witnessed
monumental changes in the Islamic world. ... Intellectually, he played an even more important role
(sc. than politically), forging an intellectual synthesis that can be compared to that of Zhu Xi (d.
AD 1200) in China and Thomas Aquinas (d. AD 1274) in the Latin West. Tusi, though, was not
simply a synthesizer and rejuvenator of the Hellenistic tradition in Islam; he also made innovative
and significant contributions in science and mathematics [F. Jamil Ragep in: Encyclopaedia of the
History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Non-Western Cultures, 22008, p. 1721].2 , Kit absakl/shakl al-qit. a/al-qat.t. a/al-k. at.t. a, Book on he sector configuration [G.
a landmark in the history of mathematics. This work is really the first in history on trigonometry
as an independent branch of pure mathematics and the first in which all six cases for a right-angled
spherical triangle are set forth [Seyyed Hossein Nasr inDSBvol. 13, p. 510].
