L'Association Suisse de Statistique, fondée en janvier

1988, a pour but de promouvoir l'usage et le deve­

loppement de la statistique en Suisse, de représenter

les intér~ts des practiciens, des chercheurs et des

enseignants dans ce domaine et de contribuer à faire

reconnaitre la statistique comme une discipline à part

entière.

le Bulletin est publie trois fois par an: en février,

juin et octobre. Il e$1 en voyê à tous les membres de

l'association. Les frais de cotisation annuelle sont de

Fr . 20 pour les personnes physiques et de Fr. 200

pour les personnes morales.

Mathematical Applications (MA) is a department within Central Research and employ$ 20 applied mathematicians/statisticians. MA supports various chemical, biological and technical fields of the company by applied mathematical-statistical methods.

ln this respect MA has to pursue a twofold task

i) provide the company an efficient and competent service in respect of mathematical and statistical applications

ii) maintain and update the knowledge of statistical competence to warrant long-lerm bene fit to the company

Both tasks have to be percieved in an adequate balance which currently requests for approximately 60% service work for our C!BA-GEICY customers and 40% of our own internai statistical research activities.

Service activities

As a service institution within the company MA supports biological oriented customers (toxicology, pharmaceutical and agrochemical research) as weil as techoical oriented activities. (dyestuff, pigments and production). The tools and techniques caver a .,.,ide tange ot applied statistical methodologies like

experimental design data analysis mathematical modelling & optimisation

• problem structuring & decision support • math./statistical data processing.

Any given service has to be paid by our C!BA-CEICY internai customer at a current rate of about Fr. 1000.-- per working day. Because the demand exceeds the service-capacity, MA can select or reject service requests. MA's main effort is to avoid routine-work as muchas possible, but we cannot escape them completety.

Statistical research activities

An etficient and effective consultancy support within CIBA-GEIGY can only be warranted as long as members of Mathematical Applications maintain excellence and frontienhip in mathematical-statistical methodologies and tools. However this needed expertise can only be acquired by pursuing interna! statistical research projects afid al!ocating appropriate resources. Currently MA is concentrating their efforts on the following four research tapies:

MA-members

MA is a small department in comparison to other research or management service

units. The total staff number is 20, 18 of which do have an academie education, 14

with o Ph.D. ln addition the department has also the possibility to offer post-doc

positions. The departments company experience is characterised by the 5-oomber­

summary and the age-structure by a Boxp!ot.

Hard- and Software

The modern computing environment for a statisticien is a workstation that

combines computing power, man-machine interaction and high-denslty dynamic

graphical capabilities A computing network emerged therefore gradually in MA and

reached currently the status of 10 Apollo-workstations, which includes 6 DN J500

and 4 DN 3000 with a total of 1.2 G8 Harddisk and a computer powe r of JO MIPS.

The terminais ünked t o the c.entra[ IBM mainframe will 9radually be replaced by

the Apollo-network.

The SAS products are the basic software tools, but additions! special purpose software are implemented on Apol!o-workstatlons. These include:

Bayes IV: a system to compute numerical\y marginal posterior densities

ISP: command language for the interactive exploration and analysis of data.

5-Pius: interactive environment software for data analysis and graphies.

Medical Statistics Js a department of the Pharma Division of CIBA-GEIGY

whlch is responsible for the statistical aspects of the clinical research and

development of pharmaceuticals and of pharmacoepidemiological studie.s.

Background: The clinical research and development of a phal"IJIIlceutical

preparation is divided into different phases, at the end of each of which a

"go/no go" decl.sJon bas to be made. Phase I comprises trial& in health

volunteers which are aimed at testing the tolerabllity of the drug. ln

Phase II, clinicat trials are carried out in order to determine the dose­

range in which the drug shows therapeutic efficacy combined with good

tolerabllity. ln Phase IIJ, extensive clinical trials are performed in order

to obtain sufficient evidence for the efficacy and safety of the preparation.

The Phase IV trials are clinical trials carried out aCter a preparation has

been introduced onto the market, in order to answer special questions

concerning tolerabillty and efficacy. Pharmacoepidemiological studies are surveys carried o~et in order to obtain additional information, mainly on the

safety of the use of a drug.

Witbin the framework of these activities the main tasks of the s tatisticians

are the following:

Support in the conœptual planning of dMig-developroent projec ts in the

individual Phases , in order to en sure that adequate data for the

deci.sion-maldng proœss are available at each Decision Point ("go/no

go").

• Statistlcal planning of the individual trials and studiea within the

franaework of the overall project, whereby proposais for the future

statistical analysis are already part. of the planning.

- StaUstical analysls and reporting of the trials and studies.

The statisticians of Medical Statistics undertake these activities in the

project as independent partners, ln close collaboration with the physicians

responsible for the medical aspects. Medical Slatistics is stl"Uctured in four

groups, corresponding to the four therepeutic indication areas. The depart­

ment is in a state of gt'OWth and expansion and at present comprises 20

positions, wtùch are not yet all filled. Currently, the following statistlcians

In the application·related Medical Statistics department 80% of the Ume

available is spent for statistical 1 methodological activities in the dl"Ug

projects. The other 20\ of the avaiiable lime is used for methodotogical

aspects which are of general relevance for the overall tasks. These general

methodological aspects are handled by theme-specific worlùng-gt'Oups,

which are at present actively involved with the foUowing themes:

Cross-over designs, Quality of I..lte, Planning instl"Uments, Standardization

of reporting and documentation.

The main r ""1-)odological interes ls are as follows:

General: - All methods of applied statistics connected with the development

and surveillance of phannaceutical preparations.

Special: - Methods for the decision process in the development of

pharroaceu tical preparations.

Possibilities for the application of the Bayesian approach in

drug development.

Besides participation in seminars and congresses, specialist communication

is also promoted through internai discussions and lectures, by regular

meetings with the department's consultant, Dr. D. Spiegelna.!ter, and close

contacts with other ClBA-GEJGY statistic:ians from the "Mathematical

Applications" department and fr om Group Comparues.

The main publication activity of Medical Statistics consists of collaborative

articles with Medical colleagues for journals in the cUnical fields of

application in whlch members of the department work. Publications appear

in journals such as: Schweiz.Med. Wochenzeitschrift 1 Zeltschrift fUr Rheuma­

tologie 1 British Medical Journal 1 Lancet 1 J. Clin. Oncology 1 Br. J.

Surg. 1 Agents and Actions J Journal of Neurotransmission.
