A Bayes i an app roach to r e s o l u t i o n i s p r e s e n t e d in which a d i r e c t ca lcu la t ion is made of the p o s t e r i o r p robab i l i t y that the he ight of a second peak in a doub- l e t is g r e a t e r than z e r o . Since it m a k e s full use of all ava i lab le i n fo rma t ion , the Bayes i an method should be an e f fec t ive method for r e s o l v i n g peaks . This con- c lus ion i's borne out in a c o m p a r i s o n of the Bayes i an method to deeonvolut ion, second d e r i v a t i v e , c r o s s - c o r r e l a t i o n , and l e a s t - s q u a r e s me thods fo r the r e - so lu t ion of no isy L o r e n t z i a n double t s with v a r i o u s r e - l a t ive he igh ts and s e p a r a t i o n s . In addit ion, the m e a n - ing of r e s u l t s obta ined by both l e a s t - s q u a r e s and Bayes i an m e thods in a low s i g n a l - t o - n o i s e r a t i o s i t u - a t ion is d i s c u s s e d and i l l u s t r a t e d .

A s im p le a tomic f l u o r e s c e n c e s y s t e m , c o n s i s t i n g of a low in t ens i ty cont inuum s o u r c e , a novel g raph i te a tomiza t i on s y s t e m , a s m a l l m o n o c h r o m a t o r and photon count ing e l e c t r o n i c s , i s used to obtain d e t e c t - ion l i m i t s in the ppb r ange for 13 e l e m e n t s . T h e s e e l e m e n t s and de tec t ion l i m i t s (in ng /ml ) a r e : Zn (5), Cd (1), Ni (30), Fe (20), Mn (5), Pb (10), Mg (3), Sn (20), In (10), Bi (10), Cu (2), Ag (0,7) and Cr (40). The hea ted g raph i te a tomiza t ion s y s t e m employs con- t inuous s a m p l e in t roduc t ion for good r ep rodu c i b i l i t y (1, 3%), and no background e m i s s i o n i s o b s e r v e d . The fu rnace is ope ra t ed cont inuously , and a cont inuous p y r o l y s i s t r e a t m e n t of the fu rnace tube p e r m i t s e s - s en t i a l ly indef in i te o p e r a t i n g l i fe . The fu rnace is capable of ope ra t ion at tube t e m p e r a t u r e s of up to 3000~ at power inputs of up to 2, 5 kW.

A new n o n d i s p e r s i v e m u l t i e l e m e n t a tomic f l u o r e s - cence (AF) technique , which o p e r a t e s in the t i m e - d iv i s ion mul t ip lexed (TDM) mode , i s capable of ana- lyz ing 4 to 8 e l e m e n t s in a f lame in l e s s than 3 s e - conds . The technique is r ap id enough to allow mu l t i - e l e m e n t d e t e r m i n a t i o n s on a t r a n s i e n t a tom popula t - ion, such as that p roduced f r o m a nonf lame a t o m i z e r . The s y s t e m e m p l o y s c o m p u t e r - c o n t r o l l e d pulsed hollow cathode l a m p s , a shea thed b u r n e r or nonf lame a t o m i z e r , and a c o m p u t e r - c o n t r o l l e d synch ronous i n t e g r a t o r as wel l as c o m p u t e r i z e d data acqu i s i t ion and p r o c e s s i n g . The e f f ec t s of shea th gas flow r a t e s and b u r n e r pos i t ion on AF s igna l s and f lame back- ground a r e r e p o r t e d fo r the ana ly s i s of Hg, Cd, Zn, and Pb. Detec t ion l i m i t s obta ined with a 4 - c h a n n e l TDM -A F f l ame s p e c t r o m e t e r a r e c o m p a r e d with those obtained with a convent iona l sequen t i a l , d i s p e r s i v e m u l t i e l e m e n t AF s y s t e m . The r e s u l t s indica te that the TDM s y s t e m can ach ieve exce l l en t de tec t ion l i - m i t s for c e r t a i n e l e m e n t s . De tec t ion l i m i t s a r e a l so r e p o r t e d fo r a 3 -channe l TDM, nonf lame AF s p e c t r o -

The i n f o r m a t i o n con t r ibu ted by all of the d i s c r i m i n a n t funct ions may t h e r e b y be used in mak ing p r e d i c t i o n s . This s tudy d e m o n s t r a t e s how the ab i l i ty to c o r r e c t l y c l a s s i f y the s p e c t r a i n c r e a s e s with each addi t iona l d i s c r i m i n a n t funct ion used . When only the l a r g e s t d i s c r i m i n a n t funct ion is employed , 46% of the data se t is c o r r e c t l y c l a s s i f i e d as be longing to one out of a to ta l of fou r - t een poss ib l e c l a s s e s . The five l a r g e s t d i s c r i m i n a n t funct ions p roduce a 90% pred ic t ion , while twelve to four teen d i s c r i m i n a n t funct ions r e s u l t in the c o r r e c t c l a s s i f i c a t i o n of the e n t i r e data se t .

Uber Strukturuntersuchung an kristallinen Salzen vier- wertiger Metalle, die als Ionenaustauscher geeignet sind, wird am Beispiel des wasserunlSslichen Zirko- ninmphosphats beriehtet. Die schichtf6rmige Anord- hung der Kristalle, der Sehiehtabstand und der damit zusammenh~ingende Wassergehalt sowie die Gegen- ionen sind ffir die Austausehereigensehaften ebenso von Bedeutung wie der Grad der Kristallinit~t, der z.B. durch unterschiedliche Darstellungsbedingungen bis zu einem gewissen Grad gesteuert werden kann. Diskutiert werden die Abh~ingigkeit der Selektivit~t ffir gro~e Kationen yon sterischen Hinderungseffekten sowie die katalytisehe Wirkung von geringen Mengen an Natriumionen auf den Austausch gro~er hydrati- sierter Kationen. AuSer Zirkoniumphosphat werden Zirkoninmarsenat und Titanphosphat als schichtfbr- mige und Cer(IV)-phosphat als Vertreter der anorga- nisehen Ionenaustauscher mit faseriger Struktur in die Untersuchung einbezogen.
