Air travel is the most efcient way o movingwithin the region. All the major places o interest and cities have airports within easyreach. The Thai and Vietnam service areparticularly well structured: and the othercountries rapidly ollowing suit with anincreasing choice o carriers and budgets tosuit all pockets. Myanmar currently does havea more limited schedule o ights, but with theexpansion o tourism, more will soon becomeavailable. Flying is the ideal means o transportwhen time is o the essence. Indus choose thebest possible option available at the time o booking or their guests.

B Y R O A D

Driving in the region is an experience in itsel. In some places the standard o road is poorand in the monsoon season prone to ooding, however, many new roads are being constructed:connecting all the main towns, cities and placeso interest together. Thailand or example

has an excellent network, Myanmar is slowlyupgrading, whilst Highway One in Vietnamrom Hanoi to the Mekong Delta is virtually a‘super highway’! Don’t orget there are otherorms o transport – ox and bualo cart rides,Remok (tuk-tuk) un,’ cyclos’ (rickshaws),elephant saaris and o course – the buses –oten ast, loud and manic! All Indus guestshave an exclusive private car with a/c, andan experienced English speaking driver, wellaccustomed to the local road nuances! For smallgroups all coaches have a/c and knowledgeabledriver/guides.

B Y T R A I

The rail system throughout the countries variestremendously in style and comort. In Myanmarit’s old, slow but cheap and a great way tomeet the locals – choose between hard or sotbenches! Contrast that with the most romanticway o travelling on a train on the abledEastern & Oriental Express or a touch o pureluxury or rumble along on Cambodian trains -

still with a ew teething troubles ater the Frenchbuilt it 100 years ago. But no matter – this iswhat a holiday is about, meeting wonderulpeople, passing through glorious countryside, eeling the rhythm o the land.

B Y W A T E R

Water, in the area is a synonym or ‘superhighways’. The mighty rivers o the region, theMekong and Irrawaddy with their countlesstributaries have been the main source o internaltransportation or generations. Today visitorscan take a short cruise through the maze o waterways scattered throughout the region orspend a ew days cruising in elegant luxuriouscruise boats taking in the sights and soundso the river bank villages, seeing some o theincredible ancient highlights or simply relaxon the observation deck. Other un waterexperiences include rating, long tail power boatand sampan rides. Indus oers an excellentselection o cruises and day excursions or theirguest’s enjoyment.

t r a v e l w i t h i n

t h e r e g i o nAs with all emerging and developing countries the standard o internal trav el can vary tremendously, and Indus

endeavours to use the best possible means o travel at each destination. With the advent o tourism Air links have

become more widespread as distances to travel can oten be vast. Gradually each country is building a network

o Local and International carriers and upgrading airports. Roads are oten crowded, congested and provide

an unorgettable experience! Many tours take to the water and use some o the luxurious river cruisers – whilst

occasional trips in sampans add an extra thrill! Trains ply the lands and or Indus guests memorable journeys on the

acclaimed Eastern & Oriental Express gives another glimpse into many unseen lands within the region.

Vientiane (Sandalwood City) is a sprawling oldColonial city, on the banks o the Mekong, with alaid back and almost serene atmosphere. Localsconsider it as being ‘mad busy’ in comparisonwith the other Laotian towns! Originally oundedin the 10th C. Vientiane became the capital aterthe all o Luang rabang.

Like the rest o the country, its history isturbulent: reected in the many culturalinuences rom the Siamese, Burmese, Khmers-more recently the French. Charming FrenchColonial boulevards and ancient BuddhistTemples blend seamlessly together.

In ieng Khuang rovince, there lies themysterious lain o Jars. Myth and legendabound but, as yet, no clue is orth coming asto why these jars, apparently cut rom the solidrock 2-3000 years ago, are there. ESCO issponsoring projects to help unravel the mystery.honsavan, the capital o the region, is the maintourist centre.

The mountainous area is one o great strategicimportance – both commercially and militarily– located close to the Vietnamese boarder. By1964, the orth Vietnamese and athet Lao hadestablished vast tunnels under the lain o Jars,as part o the Ho Chi Minh trail. Local ethnictribes live in the remote mountains, includingthe Thai Dam, huan and H’mong, the largestminority group in the area: all still ollow theirtraditional ancestral way o lie.

ntil the mid-16th C. Luang rabang was the Royal capital o the country - Lane ang. Today, itretains an air o old world charm and tranquility; graced by its sotly aded French Colonial legacy.A myriad o ancient streets, hidden alleyways and over 30 glorious gilded Temples create a medleyo culture and history. ot surprisingly Luang rabang is a ESCO World Heritage Site. As dawn breaks, a timeless ceremony takes place, when oerings o ood are given to the solemn lines o saron robed Monks, coming orth rom their Monasteries, to receive alms rom the local people. It’s amoving and very special sight. Luang rabang continues to be the main centre or Buddhist learning in Laos. There are some delightul and ascinating places to visit close to Luang rabang. Take a boat tripalong the Mekong to the sacred ak Ou Caves. Set high in the clis, they shelter thousands o images o the Buddha, many are gold lacquered and let by pilgrims. Bagan, is, as Kipling said about Burma ‘unlikeany land you know’ – as indeed it does – simplytaking your breath away. Temples and Stupasrise majestically as ar as the eye can see – andurther and urther...

Built over a long period the monuments changein style and grandeur as each ruler vied with hispredecessors to make his architectural religiousmark. Sunset changes the landscape as theading rays linger a moment, caressing the stonewith muti-coloured rainbow hues and flling thesky with wonder. Then it is gone. The momentpassed and night comes with darkness.

Yangon is alive and pulsating – yet it still retainsits cloak o turn-o-the-century architecturewith mansions straight rom London andcivic buildings in the immortal Colonial style. The extraordinary Shwedagon agoda orGolden agoda is totally unique – no buildingin Yangon dare rise higher than its GoldenSpire – and encrusted with gold plate and thetop studded with over 4500 diamonds withthe fnal stone being 72 carat. Shaven-headedmonks in chocolate or burgundy robes still walksolemnly, quietly accepting alms in the mistydawn. Markets teem with colour - with hawkerspeddling everything you could possible imagine!Hidden alleys with amazing architecture aretruly captivating. Smiling aces and warmgreetings – this is Yangon.

I L E L A K E

Close to Yangon in the resh green highlandso the Shan Hills, lies the beautiul Inle Lake inan area o outstanding natural beauty. Smallvillages oat on the waters, each with its owngarden tethered in place by bamboo poles –gently rising up and down with the water level.Local fshermen are known or their distinctiverowing style which involves standing on oneleg in the stern and wrapping the other aroundthe oar. It evolved quite simply as a means tosee where they were going as the lake is coveredby reeds and oating plants! Hill tribes live inthe surrounding verdant valleys and soaringmountains. Religious monuments aboundincluding haung Daw with the shapes o its fve 12th C. statues totally obscured by theoerings o gold lea rubbed onto them.

‘The Road to Mandalay’ – the poem immortalizing Mandalay by Rudyard Kipling - still brings a sighto the lips! It evokes the romance and history so closely intertwined in the ormer Royal capital andcultural heart o Burma. The main sights include the Royal alace with its surrounding moat andcountless Monasteries and agodas: all breathtakingly beautiul and demanding a visit. Highlightsinclude the Shwenandow agoda, with its walls exquisitely embellished with woodcarvings, theMahamuni agoda with its gold lea covered Buddha and the Kuthodaw agoda, home to the world’slargest book. It is estimated that 3 out o every 5 monks in Burma lives in the city!

o journey to Mandalay would be complete without a climb to the top o Mandalay Hill encrustedwith wonderul stupas, and to linger, at the end o the day, watching the magnifcent sunset. Mucho the cities lie revolves around the lie giving Irrawaddy River, still a main artery o the country.Mandalay is also amed or its ongoing traditions o nurturing skilled cratsmen who created the“Shwe Chi Htoe” (Golden Weaving) tapestries, and, excel at wood carving and silver and bronze ware.
