Dear Fellow Kachchhi Oswals,
Jai Jinendra!
Thank you for electing me as President of the Kachchhi Oswal Jain Association in North America
(KOJAIN). I’m truly humbled. I would like to express my thanks to outgoing President, Navin Dedhia.
Navinbhai provided KOJAIN with good sound leadership. Under his leadership, a consensus process
for resolving issues has been firmly and clearly established.
Since inception KOJAIN has supported Kachchhi villagers in Kachchh via not-for-profit Indian
organization like Vivekananda Research & Technical Institute (VRTI), Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust
etc… to promote rural development in Kachchh, to provide medical help and follow-up care
throughout the year etc… The current Board of Directors (BOD) will continue that tradition for
supporting the Kachchhi community in India. In that spirit we’re planning to take up a new initiative,
subject to BOD’s approval, to support our community brethren in Mumbai via Awas Yojana. This
yojana is coordinated by Kachchhi Jain Foundation, a non-profit organization. Details will follow.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all the past Presidents Harilal Shah, Tansukh Maru,
Kalyanji Mota, Vijay Chheda, & Navin Dedhia for establishing KOJAIN on solid footing and for their
continual support.
We hope that all members have received a very informative & excellent 2013 Directory. Our thanks
go to Navin Vora (Burtonsville, MD) for publishing the directory & to Nitul S. Haria (Fremont, CA),
Jaideep J. Shah (San Jose, CA), and Navin Dedhia (San Jose, CA) for transcribing & collating Oswal
community member’s information.
If you want to share any major family events like birthdays, graduation, marriages, achievements
with other community members, a KOJAIN newsletter is the perfect way to communicate. Also any
group activities like Bowling, Picnics, and/or Diwali programs, contact your regional director to get it
published in the KOJAIN newsletter.
If you have any comments/ideas for improving KOJAIN, please let us know. We’ll make every effort
to discuss it in our in BOD meeting and if feasible we’ll implement it.
Let us all move forward to improve KOJAIN further with vigor and determination.
KOJAIN President

BEYOND BOLLYWOOD EXHIBITION SHOWING AT SMITHSONIAN – BY DR. MASUM MOMAYA, PH.D.
From Elgin, Illinois Dr. Masum Momaya. PH.D., alumni of Stanford and Harvard University is Kutchi, & practicing Jain.
Her parents, Hansa Momaya, and Hemendra Momaya, from Kochi and Mumbai respectively.
“Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation,” detailing the history of Indian Americans
and their contributions to the United States from the 1700s to the present. The 5,000-square-foot
exhibition shows at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History Feb. 27, 2014 through
August 16, 2015 and is curated by Dr. Masum Momaya. The exhibition features Indian Americans’
migration experiences, working lives, political struggles and cultural and religious contributions.
Highlighted artifacts include a dress worn by First Lady Michelle Obama designed by Indian American
Naeem Khan; the 1985 National Spelling Bee trophy awarded to the first Indian American winner, Balu
Natarajan; and Mohini Bhardwaj’s 2004 Olympic Silver Medal for gymnastics.
When asked by the press, why the name Beyond Bollywood, Masum replied, think visitors will be
surprised to learn that the first person of Indian origin to set foot on Indian soil came in 1790, just 14
years after this country was founded. Early Indian immigrants in the 1800s and 1900s built
the railroads, worked in lumber mills, established small businesses and trade links with South Asia and
labored on and later owned farms, some of which are still owned by the same families five and six
generations later. For me, and I hope for others, this history sheds new light on contemporary debates
about patriotism, and who is American. The link below is a Fox news video on the above subject that
is interesting to watch and listen.

CHANDRAKANT M. GANGER
The Chicago and KOJAIN communities have lost one of our pioneer members and a longtime leader
of the Kutchhi community, as we learned with great sorrow and sadness, the news of the passing
away of Mr. Chandrakant M. Ganger of (Niles, Illinois) Chicago, Gam Nagalpur, on Saturday, April
26th, at 11:05 AM Chicago time.
He provided financial help, and guidance to many Kutchhi's who were the early settlers in the Chicago
area. He guided us, educated us, provided shelter and food when needed, and made sure that that
we all succeeded in achieving our goals. He was truly a humanitarian. Although he came from
incredibly humble beginnings, Chandrakant graduated first class from India in 1965 for Engineering.
He immigrated to the US, and received his BSME in Civil and Mechanical Engineering from Chicago
Technical Institute in 1969. He was written about in local newspapers often times for his achievements
and dedication to educating others.
He was celebrated as RSES Man of the Year and received many accolades from his professional
associations related to Energy and Engineering. He was even labeled 'Computer Dad' for a year by the
local Niles newspaper for helping out local school district. He is survived by two sons (Anand & wife
Laura Ganger / Amul & wife Trisha Ganger) and four grandchildren. He was brother of Mayur Ganger;
Pushpa Shah, Vasanti Chande, Sushila Shah, and Kusum Kshirsagar. Let us pray that his soul finds
peace and his memories continue to brighten the lives of his loved ones and many other. We pray for
his soul and deepest sympathy to family members.
Please attend there will be a puja and memorial service for Chandrakant Gangar on June 1st at

MEENA SHAH, HOUSTON, TEXAS
Mrs. Meena Shah of Houston was very excited. She has spent a month working hard in Mumbai,
Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Varanasi, to help in the 2014 campaign in India; she was an active
participant in the Houston arm of Mission-2014. This is an international support group run by Global
Indians for Bharat Vikas (GIBV) to provide a platform to people of Indian origin residing outside of
India.
Prior to going to India, she made hundreds of phone-calls to her relatives, friends and acquaintances
in India. She participated in Houston meetings so the USA members of GIBV can support the election
campaign. Phone lists of thousands of Indian voters were created to make cold calls to strangers in
India. This was an effective strategy since the people in India were very excited and receptive to
phone calls from USA. Meena is a Registered Nurse by profession. She volunteered in several medical
camps of Bidada Sarvoday Trust and Bhojay Sarvoday Trust.

VOLUNTEERING AT BIDADA HOSPITAL – BY JILL SAVLA, MD
Are you interested in medicine or global health? Have you ever wanted to volunteer in India? Would
you like to spend some time in Kutch? If yes, then I enthusiastically recommend that you consider
volunteering at the Bidada Hospital. The Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust is a nonprofit organization
that organizes a free medical and surgical camp every January in the village of Bidada, Kutch, Gujarat.
I have now volunteered twice at the Bidada Hospital, once as an undergraduate college student and
again as a physician. Both experiences have been very memorable, educational, and rewarding
opportunities to give back to my own community!
The first time I went to Bidada in 2006, I did not know anything about medicine yet and was just a
general volunteer. I helped with patient registration, computer typing, taking histories, recording vital
signs, and daily organization tasks. It was an eye-opening experience to see people less fortunate
than me, with no access to medical care, who were still recovering from the devastating 2001
earthquake in Buhl. I was pleasantly surprised by great work being done by many passionate and
dedicated individuals, which inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.
The second time that I visited Bidada was in January 2014, when I was finishing my pediatric residency
and starting cardiology fellowship. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) sponsored me to
work at the Bidada medical camp for a rotation in global health to learn more about health issues in
rural India. I gained first-hand knowledge about specific medical conditions that I had only read
about in textbooks but never seen before in the United States, such as rheumatic heart disease. I
learned many valuable lessons during my time in Kutch that I now use everyday while taking care of
my own patients. I would love to keep coming back to volunteer at the Bidada Hospital every year
and become their regular pediatric cardiologist at the annual medical camp. For more information,
please visit the website www.bidada.com or contact Dr. Jill Savla at [email protected].
