Die neue Auslieferung unseres Verlages

Es gehört zur Tradition des Mohr Siebeck Verlags und zu seinen Besonderheiten, daß wir ein Buchlager betreiben und den Versand von Büchern und Zeitschriften in eigener Regie unternehmen. Im Hauptlager in der Christophstraße wird unsere Backlist mit über 6.500 Titeln langfristig lieferbar gehalten. Im Handlager, das sich im Bürogebäude in der Wilhelmstraße befindet, lagern wir Neuerscheinungen und Titel, die sich überdurchschnittlich gut verkaufen. Für unseren Verlag kommt darin sinnfällig zum Ausdruck, daß ein Buch, das als Idee in der Wissenschaft entstanden ist, nach seiner Produktwerdung auch als Ware physisch im Verlag anwesend bleibt – eine Symbolik, die uns stets aufs Neue die Entstehungsgeschichte eines Buches vor Augen führt.

So schön diese Symbolik ist – und auch mir persönlich überaus zusagt –, das Lager und seine Organisation sind in die Jahre gekommen. Nicht nur, daß die Räumlichkeiten nicht mehr den Anforderungen an eine zeitgemäße Lagerhaltung genügen, die Zweiteilung des Lagers ist unter den Bedingungen einer deutlich erhöhten Buchproduktion von ca. 400 Titeln pro Jahr auch logistisch komplexer geworden. Dazu kommt, daß Lager und Versand nicht an ein digitales Warenwirtschaftssystem und an die Verlagssoftware angebunden sind, mit der die organisatorisch angrenzenden Abteilungen wie Herstellung, Vertrieb, Kundenservice und Marketing arbeiten. Schließlich darf man sich fragen, ob es zu den Kernaufgaben eines Verlags gehört, ein eigenes Lager zu unterhalten, wenn »buchnähere« Dienstleistungen wie Satz, Druck und Bindung längst von darauf spezialisierten Dienstleistern eingekauft werden. Überlegungen dieser Art haben uns im Verlag im letzten Jahr intensiv beschäftigt und im Ergebnis zu dem Entschluß geführt, einen Dienstleister mit der Lagerhaltung und dem Versand unserer Bücher zu beauftragen.

Wir freuen uns, mit der Sigloch Distribution GmbH & Co. KG in Blaufelden einen der führenden Anbieter im Bereich der Verlagslogistik als Partner gefunden zu haben, der ab 1. Juli 2019 Lagerung und Versand für unseren Verlag übernehmen wird. Die gesamte Bestellabwicklung wird in der Hand unseres eigenen Kundenservices im Verlag bleiben, so daß Ihnen als Kunden weiterhin die gewohnten Ansprechpartner zur Verfügung stehen.

A New Way for Mohr Siebeck’s Distribution

It is one of our publishing house’s traditional characteristics that the tasks of storing and distributing Mohr Siebeck books and journals have been kept under our own roof. Our main warehouse in Tübingen’s Christophstrasse has been home to a backlist of 6500plus titles which has ensured its longterm availability, while a store at our main building in Wilhelmstrasse has housed our latest releases and bestselling titles. For us as a publishing house, a book that started as an academic idea and is then physically present in the publishing house is a constant symbolic reminder of how it has been created.

But as pleasing as this may be – and it is a symbolism that certainly appeals to me – the warehouse and its operation have grown long in the tooth. Modern warehousing demands, the two separate storage areas, and a marked increase in production to over 400 titles a year have all put a strain on the space available and led to ever more complex logistics. Added to this is the fact that there is not a digital merchandise management system linking the warehouse and distribution processes into the software that adjacent departments such as production, marketing and sales, and customer service work with. At the end of the day, the question had to be asked whether it is necessary for a publisher to have its own warehouse when bookrelated services like typesetting, printing and binding have all long since been bought in from specialised providers. Having thoroughly considered all these matters last year, we decided to entrust a service provider with the storage and distribution of our books.

We are now pleased to announce that from July the 1st, 2019, Sigloch Distribution GmbH & Co KG, one of the best addresses for publishing logistics, will be working with us in these areas. Th e Hebrew Bible has played an important part in the development of Western culture. However, its central ideas – such as monotheism, the demythologization of nature or the linearity of time – had to be taken out of the national and linguistic milieu in which they had developed if they were to become fertile on a wider scale. Th ey also needed to be rendered palatable to a mentality that had experienced the scientifi c, rationalist revolution prepared by the Greeks. Th e Septuagint – the oldest Greek translation of the Jewish Bible, produced over the third and second centuries BC – is the fi rst important step in this process of acculturation.Over the last twenty years the Septuagint has come out of the shadow of its Hebrew source. Historians of Judaism, linguists, and biblical scholars have come to view the Septuagint as a signifi cant document in its own right. As the discoveries in Qumran have shown, the Hebrew source text of the Septuagint was not identical to the traditional text received by the synagogue (the Masoretic Text). Also, the translators appear to have taken a degree of liberty in interpreting the text. Dominique Barthélemy used the term ›aggiornamento‹: the Septuagint is a kind of update of the Jewish scriptures.Th is largescale collective and interdisciplinary project aims to produce a new research tool: a multivolume dictionary providing a comprehensive article (around 600 articles in all) for each important word or word group of the Septuagint. Th e articles cover a wide range of information: the background of a word in classical and Hellenistic Greek, its use in papyri and inscriptions, the Septuagint evidence, furthermore its infl uence on Jewish literature in Greek, New Testament and Early Christian writings. Filling an important gap in the fi elds of ancient philology and religious studies, the dictionary is based on original research of the highest scientifi c level.

Historisches und theologisches Lexikon der Septuaginta. Band 1.Da s Wörterbuch schließt eine beträchtliche Lücke auf dem Gebiet der biblischen Exegese, der Erforschung der griechischen Sprache und der Religionswissenschaft en. Jeder Artikel besteht aus sechs Abschnitten. Diese behandeln den Gebrauch eines Wortes im klassischen und hellenistischen Griechisch, in den Papyri und den Inschrift en, in der Septuaginta, in der jüdischen Literatur aus hellenistischer Zeit, im Neuen Testament und im frühen Christentum. Auf diese Weise werden Bedeutungsentwicklungen sichtbar, gleichzeitig treten die Spezifi ka des biblischen Sprachgebrauchs hervor.Ziel dieses internationalen und interdisziplinären Projekts ist die Publikation eines neuen Forschungsinstruments, eines vierbändigen Wörterbuchs, das zu jedem wichtigen Begriff der Septuaginta einen ausführlichen Artikel enthält. Ranon Katzoff On Jews in the Roman World Collected Studies

Th e present volume presents a selection of studies by Ranon Katzoff on Jews in the ancient Roman world. Common to them is that they deal with Jews in liminal situations – confronted with nonJewish, mainly Roman, laws, places, government, and modes of thought. In these studies – in which texts in Greek and Latin and rabbinic texts (all in translation) elucidate each other – Jews are shown to be rather loyal to their Jewish traditions, a controversial conclusion.Th e fi rst two sections concern law. Section one searches the remains of popular Jewish culture for evidence on the degree to which rabbinic law really prevailed, through the study of Judaean Desert documents, mainly those of Babatha. Section two sift s through rabbinic law for traces of Roman law. Section three comprises studies of Jews in, to, and from the city of Rome, and section four a miscellany of studies on Jews confronted with nonJewish life.

Loren R. Spielman Jews and Entertainment in the Ancient World Countering the traditional belief that Jews in antiquity were predominantly disinterested in the popular entertainments of the Greek and Roman world, Loren R. Spielman maps the varieties of Jewish engagement with theater, athletics, horse racing, gladiatorial, and beast shows in antiquity. Th e author argues that Jews from Hellenistic Alexandria to late antique Sepphoris enjoyed and exploited, or alternatively resisted and scorned, popular forms of public entertainment as they adapted to the political, social, and religious realities of imperial rule. Including references to ancient Jewish actors, athletes, promoters, and plays alongside analysis of rabbinic and other early Jewish critique of sport and spectacle, Loren R. Spielman describes the diff erent ways that attitudes towards entertainment might have played a role in shaping ancient Jewish identity.

In this study, Marcus Mordecai Schwartz argues that there were two distinct periods in which traditions from Rabbinic Palestine exerted their infl uence upon extended passages of B. Rosh Hashanah. Th is doubling of infl uence resulted in a Babylonianborn text with two distinct Palestinian ancestries. Th is oddly mixed parentage was responsible for Bavli texts that both resemble synoptic passages in the Yerusalmi and diff er from them in substantial ways. Th e main project of this book is to trace the dynamics of this doubled Palestinian infl uence and to account for the mark it left on passages of B. Rosh Hashanah.

Joachim Schaper Media and Monotheism Presence, Representation, and Abstraction in Ancient Judah

›Symbolising‹ – i. e., representing through the use of media – is a more elementary, more foundational activity than the selfconscious use of the intellect. Its exploration is central to this investigation of the transformation of the preexilic Yahweh religion into the monotheism of the postexilic period. Th at transformation was triggered by a new constellation of key media in the preexilic and exilic periods: writing, images, and money. Th e central objective is to understand how their use contributed to a decisive increase in abstraction in representation and led to changes in the conceptualisation of divine presence and its representation that ultimately resulted in the transition from monolatry to monotheism. In this study, Joachim Schaper explores neglected areas of Judahite material culture and contributes to an indepth reconstruction of Judah’s religious history in its most important epoch, and thus of one of the key developments in the religious history of humanity.

Julia Rhyder Centralizing the Cult Th e Holiness Legislation in Leviticus 17–26

In this work, Julia Rhyder provides new insights into the relationship between the Holiness legislation in Leviticus 17–26 and processes of cultic centralization in the Persian period. Th e author departs from the classical theory that Leviticus 17–26 merely presume, with minor modifi cations, a concept of centralization articulated in Deuteronomy. She shows how Leviticus 17–26 use ritual legislation to make a new, and distinctive case as to why the Israelites must defer to a central sanctuary, standardized ritual processes, and a hegemonic priesthood. Th is discourse of centralization refl ects the historical challenges that faced priests in Jerusalem during the Persian era: in particular, the need to compensate for the loss of a royal sponsor, to pool communal resources in order to meet socioeconomic pressures, and to fi nd new means of negotiating with the sanctuary at Mount Gerizim and with a growing diaspora.

Trotz dieser Bedeutung gibt es bisher keine umfassende Untersuchung zu Gottes Geist in den Schrift en des Alten Testaments. Mareik e Verena Blischke versucht, diese Lücke zu schließen. Eschatological Reconstruction of Stages of Redaction (Fort-schreibungen) in the Book of Job.Th e Book of Job in the Old Testament poses the question, paradigmatically, of a meaningful relationship with God in view of unjust suff ering. In this work, Sonja Feldmar studies those passages which were added during the later stages of writing, a process which took several hundred years, and provide an answer which had not been thought of up to that point: the hope of a relationship with God which transcends death and compensates for the suff ering in this life.

Th ese early chapters present interpreters with a challenging series of issues, including the strategy of revelation in John 3–4, the characterization of Nicodemus, the only references to the kingdom of God in John, Jesus’ role as Son of Man, the erga concept in the Fourth Gospel and the references to John’s baptism and Jesus’ baptism, the background and universal program of the narrative of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the universal program in John 4, and the harvest proverbs in John 4:35–38. Th e last two essays explore the characterization of the royal offi cial in John 4:46–54 and the evidence for associating the Pool of Bethzatha with healing. In this work, Arie W. Zwiep examines the gospel stories of the raising of Jairus’s daughter and the healing of the haemorrhaging woman (Mark 5:21–43; Matt 9:18–26; Luke 8:40–56) from a plurality of (sometimes confl icting) interpretive strategies to demonstrate the need and fruitfulness of a multiperspectival exegetical approach. Among the various (diachronic and synchronic) methods that are being applied in this study are philological criticism, form criticism and structural analysis, tradition and redaction criticism, orality studies and performance criticism, narrative analysis, textual criticism and the study of intertextuality. Such a comprehensive approach, it is argued, leads to an increased knowledge and a deepened understanding of the ancient texts in question and to a sharpened awareness of the applicability of current scholarly research instruments to unlock documents from the past.

Taking 2 Cor 3:6 as its starting point, the new and updated essays here assembled investigate the key passages in Romans, 1–2 Corinthians, Galatians, and Philippians in which the covenant content and eschatological context of Paul’s theology interpret one another. Developed over thirty years, Scott Hafemann’s close reading of Paul’s arguments, with an eye toward their OT/Jewish milieu, also advances the larger thesis that the various Israel /church, works/faith, and justifi cation/ judgment polarities in Paul’s thinking do not represent a material contrast between a »lawway« and a »gospelway« of relating to God. Rather, they epitomize an eschatological contrast between the character of God’s people within the two eras of salvation history in which, by virtue of the Messiah and the Spirit, the Torah of the »old covenant« is now being kept in the »new.«

Das Motiv einer Gemeinschaft mit den Engeln im Gottesdienst lässt sich in frühjüdischen und neutestamentlichen Texten fi nden. Michael R. Jost untersucht erstmals alle Belege aus Qumran und dem Neuen Testament exegetisch und diskutiert sie im Kontext traditionsgeschichtlicher Entwicklungen ausgehend von alttestamentlichen Aspekten bis hin zu rabbinischen und frühchristlichen Perspektiven. Besondere Berücksichtigung erfahren die liturgischen Texte, deren Wirkung auch in performativer Perspektive untersucht wird, womit nach der im Gottesdienst erfahrenen Gemeinschaft gefragt wird. Damit bietet der Autor neue Einsichten sowohl für die Qumran Forschung in der Analyse der liturgischen Gemeinschaft des yaḥad, als auch für die neutestamentliche Forschung und das urchristliche Gottesdienstverständnis.

O bgleich seit der Jahrtausendwende der emotional turn in den Wissenschaft en weitläufi g Einzug hält, fi nden Emotionen in der neutestamentlichen Exegese noch immer kaum Beachtung. Diesem Desiderat begegnend entwickelt Tanja Dannenmann anhand emotionspsychologischer und literaturwissenschaft licher Methoden ein Modell des emotionalen Rezeptionsvorgangs, auf dessen Basis die emotive Leserlenkung eines Erzähltextes mittels narratologischer Methoden sorgfältig analysiert werden kann. Diese »emotive Heuristik« wird exemplarisch an drei Parabeln des MatthäusEvangeliums durchgeführt (Mt 18,21–35; 24,45–51; 25,14–30). Dabei zeigt sich, dass die starken emotiven Elemente der matthäischen Parabeln die zeitliche Begründungsstruktur ihrer ethischen Forderungen zu verstärken vermögen. Die Arbeit dient somit sowohl der Vervollständigung einer holistischen Exegese als auch der Untersuchung narrativ vermittelter Ethik.

E va Günther traces the infl uence of the Jewish wisdom tradition on shaping the earliest Christology. While it is well known that Wisdom’s role of a Schöpfungsmittler was transferred to Jesus in early Christian sources such as 1 Cor 8:6 and John 1:1–3, there is another important function of Wisdom, which can be related to the ministry of the earthly Jesus. Th e author demonstrates that Wisdom had come to be seen as an agent in history in some prominent Second Temple texts, allowing for her function of saving and guiding the people of Israel to be transferred to Jesus in the »Lament over Jerusalem« (Matt. 23:37–39 par.). However, rather than being presented as an incarnation of preexistent Wisdom, Jesus is portrayed in the saying as a representation of God like the divine Wisdom, who in turn had taken on features of an »older« divine representative, the Angel of the Lord, in Second Temple texts. In the »Lament over Jerusalem« Jesus is presented as the contemporary form of this mediator.

In this work, Laura J. Hunt looks at Latin use in Ephesus, Antioch, and Alexandria. Th e evidence of intersections between Roman and Greek languages in those cities suggests that the Roman cultural encyclopaedia could shed light on the Gospel of John, particularly the trial narrative. Words that intersect with important Roman concepts include πραιτώριον, βασιλεύς, υἱὸς θεοῦ and ἐξουσία. Th e phrase Ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄνθρωπος in John 19:5 approximates hic vir, hic est from Vergil’s Aeneid (6.791), marking it as a literary allusion. A semiotic analysis of John 18:28–19:22 reveals a Jesus depicted with the words and images of a Caesar. Th e Roman Pilate tests the loyalty of both Jesus and ›the Jews‹ to Caesar, emerging as weak only in relation to Caesar. Although other scholars have looked at empire in the Gospel of John, this study off ers a sustained Roman reading of the Johannine trial narrative.

Tripp examines this oft en overlooked feature of the Fourth Gospel in the contexts of fi rst century pedagogy and literature, as well as early Christian tradition and practices. Attending to John’s direct internal quotations reveals a text at play with its christological and eschatological language, teasing out the fullest extent of its meaning. Th e Gospel of John emerges as a theological narrative anchored in yet unbound by the ideas of the wider early Christian movement.

Recently reconstructed by scholars, Q is one of the New Testament’s earliest source documents. Arguing that Q’s participation in the apocalyptic worldview of late Second Temple Judaism has greater consequences for its compositional history than previously recognized, Olegs Andrejevs performs a new literarycritical, narrative, and philological analysis of a number of Q passages, supplementing it with recent advances made in the study of Jewish apocalyptic literature, particularly the Enochic book of Parables and Qumran wisdom documents 4QInstruction and 1Q/4QMysteries. Th e end result is an updated stratigraphic model which synthesizes the insights of several scholars, most notably John S. Kloppenborg and Dale C. Allison, Jr., and highlights the feasibility of Q’s diachronic study.
