Vorwort Seit 1924 ist in deutscher Sprache kein kurzgefaßtes, einbändiges

Lehrbuch erschienen, das über die wesentlichen Belange fossiler Wirbel­loser wie Wirbeltiere gleich hinlänglich unterrichtet. Schon ein Jahrzehnt später, als ich an der Wiener Universität die Paläozoologie-Hauptvor­lesungen übernahm, war in den vorhandenen deutschsprachigenLehrbüchern nicht mehr alles als Prüfungsstoff Erforderliche zu finden; denn inzwischen waren etliche Zoo-Fossilien neu gefunden oder mit neuen Methoden untersucht worden und das Wissen über ganze Gruppen, die Vorstellungen über den Ablauf der Lebens- wie der Stammesgeschichte, die Kenntnisse über die Fossilisationserscheinungen, über die zeitliche und räumliche Verbreitung mancher Formen wie die Systematik hatten Ergänzung und Veränderung erfahren. So entstand bald der Plan, den für die ein­schlägigen Vorlesungen zusammengetragenen Stoff in Buchform zu veröffentlichen; seine Verwirklichung haben jedoch der Zweite Weltkrieg und die Folgeereignisse vorerst vereitelt. Als er wieder aufgegriffen werden konnte, war der Stoff neuerlich angewachsen und es wurde schon die Vorfrage zum Problem, ob ein Einzelner überhaupt noch das Gesamt­gebiet der Paläozoologie hinreichend überschauen konnte, um die Ab­fassung eines in diese Disziplin einführenden Lehrbuches wagen zu dürfen. Wenn ich mich trotz solcher Bedenken doch zur Ausführung jenes Planes entschlossen habe, so bin ich mir des Risikos, nicht alles, was vielleicht hätte berücksichtigt werden sollen, in die Hände bekommen zu haben, wohl be"wußt und ich kann nur hoffen, daß gegenüber dem Vorteil einer einheitlichen Darstellung Mängel solcher Art nicht allzu­schwer ins Gewicht fallen mögen.

Das nächstschwierige Problem erwuchs aus der erwähnten Stoffülle einerseits und der unabdingbar scheinenden Umfangsbegrenzung anderer­seits. Es wurde durch Beschränkungen - im allgemeinen Teil hinsichtlich der in meinem (1952 im gleichen Verlag erschienenen) Leitfaden der "Paläo­biologie und Stammesgeschichte" behandelten Fragenkreise, im speziellen hinsichtlich vor allem jener Gruppen, die ob ihrer spärlichen oder meist frag­mentären Überlieferung, ob ihrer relativ einfach gebauten Hartteile oder aus sonstigen Gründen als biohistorische Dokumente eine geringere Rolle spielen - wie durch reichliche Verwendung von Kleindruck, Abkürzungen, Symbolen und selbst telegrammstilartigerTextfassung zu meistern versucht. Daß eine solche Kompromißlösung nicht voll befriedigen kann, ist mir gleich­falls bewußt und wieder kann ich nur hoffen, daß alles in allem doch die Vorteile des eingeschlagenen Weges dessen Mängel überwiegen.

Beschränkung war wie im Text auch bei den Abbildungen geboten. Wie dort ging auch bei ihrer Auswahl mein Bestreben dahin, vor allem das für die einzelnen Gruppen Allgemeine, Typische zur Darstellung zu bringen.

Die "allgemeinen Abkürzungen" sind S. XVI, jene für Raum- und Zeit­angaben S. 28/29 in eigenen Verzeichnissen zusammengefaßt, nur in einzelnen Gruppen verwendete Abkürzungen und Symbole beim jeweils ersten Gebrauche erläutert und überdies durch entsprechende Hinweise im Namen- und Sachverzeichnis leicht aufzufinden.

Das Studium der Paläozoologie ist, gleich dem anderer Disziplinen, mit der Notwendigkeit verbunden, sich zahlreiche Fachausdrücke und Namen anzueignen. Sie entstammen größtenteils dem Griechischen wie dem Lateinischen; dem, der ihren Wortsinn weiß, erleichtern sie freilich auch das Eindringen in den Stoff, denn sie geben oft unmittelbar Aus­kunft darüber, worum es bei dem betreffenden Fachausdruck geht bzw. welche hervorstechende Eigenschaft der jeweilige Namensträger besitzt. Leider ist die Kenntnis jener griechischen und lateinischen Wörter heute selbst bei den Absolventen von klassische Sprachen lehrenden Mittel­schulen nicht mehr als selbstverständlich vorauszusetzen. Es wurden daher die meisten Fachausdrücke und viele Namen - VOr allem solche der systematischen Kategorien bis herunter zur Überfamilie - durch Bei­fügung der fremdsprachigen Stammwörter, Wortteile und Silben samt ihrer Bedeutung erläutert; gewöhnlich dort, wo sie erstmals gebraucht werden, bei zusammengesetzten Worten nur die noch nicht früher er­klärten Wortteile. Die Stellen solcher Erläuterungen sind wieder im Namen- und Sachverzeichnis besonders kenntlich gemacht.

Die Grundlage für Wissen und Forschung im Bereiche der Paläo­zoologie bilden Morphologie und Systematik, d. h. die Kenntnis des Baues der Formen bzw. Formengruppen und - zwecks Übersicht über ihre Fülle - die Ordnung in ein System. Daher wurden die morphologi­schen Verhältnisse der meist allein überlieferten Hartteile unter Bei­fügung von Hinweisen auf die Weichteil-Anatomie stets am ausführlichsten behandelt und dem zoologischen System wie der Eingliederung der Zoo-Fossilien in dasselbe ein besonderer Abschnitt im allgemeinen Teile gewidmet; im speziellen aber wurde die Gliederung durch entsprechende druckmäßige Abstufung der Kapitelüberschriften schon äußerlich über­sichtlicher und einprägsamer zu gestalten versucht.

Das zoologische System ist kaum erst in seinen Grundlinien ein­heitlich, im Einzelnen wird die Gliederung verschieden vorgenommen, wobei dann meist keine voll befriedigen kann. Welcher ich folgte, wurde meist unter Hinweis auf noch bestehende Meinungsverschiedenheiten, also Kenntnislücken, vermerkt; ebenso die wenigen Fälle, wo ich von üblichen Gliederungen abweichen zu sollen vermeinte.

Die Zoo-Fossilien gestatten und erfordern neben ihrer systematischen Ordnung auch eine nach Raum und Zeit. Angaben über den mutmaßlichen Lebensraum und über die zeitliche Verbreitung samt der für Geologen wichtigen Bedeutung als Leitfossilien sind daher der Besprechung der

einzelnen Gruppen ebenso beigefügt wie solche über die Lebensweise im allgemeinen, über Erhaltung und Vorkommen, über stammesge­schichtliche Stellung und Beziehungen. Endlich wurde auch auf die für Speläologen und Prähistoriker als quartäre Höhlenfunde bedeutsamen Zoo-Fossilien hingewiesen und die Rolle, welche viele von diesen in Volksglauben und Volksmedizin gespielt haben und zum Teil noch immer spielen, jeweils erwähnt.

Bei der Suche nach einschlägiger Literatur habe ich in den Bibliotheken der Geologisch-Paläontologischen Abteilung des Naturhistorischen Mu­seums wie des Paläontologischen und Paläobiologischen Institutes der Universität in Wien durch die Herren Univ.-Prof. Dr. H. ZAPFE, Dr. F. BACHMAYER und Dr. E. FLÜGEL bzw. Univ.-Prof. Dr. E. THENIUS und Univ.-Prof. Dr. A. PAPP wertvolle Unterstützung erfahren. Den Genannten hierfür meinen aufrichtigen Dank abzustatten ist mir ebenso Bedürfnis wie dem Springer-Verlag, Wien, welcher die Herausgabe des Buches übernommen hat.

Ich habe mich bemüht, das Buch von Druckfehleru wie von sachlich unrichtigen Angaben möglichst freizuhalten. Hinweise auf trotzdem unter­laufene derartige Mängel werde ich wie jede sonstige sachlich-konstruk­tive Kritik seitens meiner Fachgenossen dankbar entgegennehmen. Dem Buche selbst aber sei der Wunsch mit auf den Weg gegeben, daß es sich für die Studierenden der Paläozoologie wie deren biologischen und geo­logischen Nachbarfächer, aber auch für alle, die sonst Grundwissen in dieser Disziplin erwerben oder ihre Kenntnisse hierüber auffrischen wollen, als ein brauchbarer Studienbehelf bewähren möge!
