Tri-State UJA Contributes More Than $1,000,000 Advance Gifts More than $1,000,000 was contributed last Sunday, Apri l Z9 in ad-

vance g i f ts to the United Jewish Appeal at a Tri-State Regional Conference at the Will iam Penn Hotel, ojiening the Western Pennsyl-vania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia phases of the 1951 nationwide United Jewish Appeal campaign f o r Israel aid, overseas relief and assistance to newcomers to the United States.

The advance funds were pre-sented by more than 800 leaders on account of 1951 U J A drives in 75 Tri-State communities. The con-ference hailed the approaching third anniversary of the State of Israel, with Eddie Cantor, distin-guished star of Hollywood and ISroadway, leading the Tri-State group in a rising toast " t o the gal-lant State of Israel . . . a strong-hold of democracy, charting new paths of independence and freedom for its heroic people."

Pointing out that the next 30 days posed a supreme emergency for the Jews of Iraq who must leave that country f o r Israel be-fore May 31st, the deadline on Jew-ish emigration set by the Iraq Government, the conference Guest of Honor, Dr. Dov Joseph, Israel Minister of Communications, de-clared that only funds provided by the United Jewish Appeal can com-plete the rescue of 70,000 I r a q Jews in time.

Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, execu-tive vice-chairman of the U J A , re-ported to the conference that f rom coast to coast close to 1,000 U J A campaigns were already in pro-gress but he warned that the real test of the success of the 1951 U J A campaign to meet needs totalling 5203,684,577 would come in the next oO days.

The keen sense of duty of the Tri-State Communities to the cause of the United Jewish Appeal was amply demonstrated when Meyer S. Mintz, the Tri-State U J A Direc-tor called upon the community leaders to present to Dr. Joseph the checks they had broug'ht with them.
