Wir haben die Einrei-chungen zu Buchpreisen und Teilnahmen an Messen ebenso aufgeschoben wie viele unserer Partner ihre Ausstellungen und Publikationen.Unterdessen haben uns – wie sicher auch Ihnen – all die klei-nen Dinge gefehlt, die das Leben lebenswert machen: der Restaurantbesuch mit Freunden, ein Kurzurlaub am Wochen-ende, eine spontane Kaufentscheidung beim Stadtbummel. In month four of the global corona crisis, we have gotten used to home offices and digital team conferences, face masks and social distancing. Arctic Heroes takes a poignant look at the fate of the Greenland sled dog. In Greenland, where the melting ice sheet is irrevocably disrupting the hunters’ 4,000-year old traditional way of life, the stark reality of global warming is an immediate and direct threat to their everyday survival. The Greenland sled dog, essential to Inuit settlement and survival, now faces extinc-tion as hunters are forced to adapt to the van-ishing world around them. In over 150 images, and through hunters’ per-sonal stories, this book bears witness to the animals’ magnificence and the deep, integral role they play in the hunters’ lives. The subjects of Icelandic photographer Rag-nar Axelsson, also known as RAX (b. 1958), are people, animals, and landscape, but the focus of his work is the extraordinary relation-ships the people of the Arctic have developed with their extreme environment.

Bangert impressively describes his inner conflict between the over-whelming, but also selfishly driven feeling of doing something meaningful, which he wishes to experience over and over again, and the knowledge of the worries of his family and friends, which he forces to go through an emo-tional hell. What he experienced will accom-pany him throughout his entire life. But one thing is certain: he will never again go to war.

Drei Jahre lang hat Sibylle Fendt die jungen Männer regelmäßig besucht und porträtiert. Drei Jahre lang hat sie mit ihnen gewartet und die Zeit verstreichen lassen. Drei Jahre lang saß sie mit ihnen hinter zugezogenen Vorhän-gen in ihren Zimmern, während draußen die schöne Schwarzwaldlandschaft lag. Sibylle Fendt ist Mitglied der Ostkreuz-Agen-tur der Fotografen und Dozentin für Fotografie an verschiedenen Hochschulen. Ihr erfolgrei-ches erstes Fotobuch Gärtners Reise erschien 2012 und wurde letztes Jahr in zweiter Auf-lage veröffentlicht.

Deep in the Black Forest, in the Holzbach Val-ley, lies the refugee shelter H8, where refugees have lived for over twenty years. The Holzbach Valley is not a place; it is only a road, a stream, in the middle of the forest. The men have noth-ing to do there except wait, sleep, cook, use their mobile phones. If they are fortunate, after a few months they can attend an integration course in the next larger town. If they are unfor-tunate, they wait in vain. For three years, Sibylle Fendt regularly visited and portrayed the young men there. For three years, she waited with them and let time pass. For three years, she sat with them in their rooms behind closed curtains while the beautiful Black Forest landscape transpired outside. Sibylle Fendt is a member of the Ostkreuz Agency of the Photographers and teaches pho-tography at various universities. Her first photo book Gärtners Reise was first released in 2012; a second edition was published 2019.

For most people, Cape Cod is about summer vacations by the sea. Sun-drenched days at the beach, splashing in the ocean, and just being lazy. But, summer is short. By Septem-ber and October, there is a mass exodus. The tourists have gone home. Cottages are boarded up. Motels, restaurants and clam shacks shut down for the season. And, the coastline is pummeled by powerful winter storms. It is quiet, lonely, and raw. With his large format camera, Boston-based photographer Brian Kaplan focuses on this other side of life on the Cape. His portraits of seasonal workers, deserted landscapes, and narrative still lifes give us a unique insight into this fascinating place and its multiple, contrasting worlds. Kaplan developed his passion for photography while working for Stan Grossfeld at The Bos-ton Globe. He served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Griffin Museum of Photography.

The Pretend Villages documents the inhabi-tants and structures of imagined, fabricated Iraqi and Afghan villages on the training grounds of US military bases. Situated in the deep for-ests of North Carolina and Louisiana and in a great expanse of desert near Death Valley in California, these villages serve as strange and poignant way stations for soldiers headed off to war, and for those who have fled from it: American troops encounter actors, often recent immigrants from Iraq and Afghanistan, who are paid to be »cultural role-players.« Christopher Sims photographed in these sur-prising and fantastical realms over a fifteen-year period as US wars abroad fluctuated in inten-sity. With this book, he presents an archival record of »enemy« village life that is as con-vincingly accurate and comically misdirected as it is mundane and nightmarish.

India is a strange country. You come back without being fully aware of what you really saw. Everything that seems real is not. And everything that appears as imbued with super-natural well and truly exists. This doubtful situation is in fact the uncertainty of street photography: everything goes too fast, con-stantly appears and disappears in the view-finder as visions we try to capture, following the impulses of our unconscious. Reinout van den Bergh beschäftigt sich seit 2011 mit dem Fotoprojekt Eboundja. Seit 2009 leben die 30 Familien im gleichnami-gen Fischerdorf in großer Unsicherheit, was ihre Zukunft angeht. Das Dorf liegt in der Mitte eines Küstenstreifens, an dem die Chinesen im Austausch gegen Kameruns Eisenerz einen Tiefwasserhafen bauen. Die Anwohner stehen der Kombination aus korrupter Regierung und größenwahnsinnigen Projektentwicklern wehr-los gegenüber. In seiner Fotoserie zeigt van den Bergh auf sehr engagierte Weise den Nie-dergang, aber auch die Intimität und Schön-heit der kleinen Gemeinde; die Resignation, aber auch den Stolz und den Widerstand.Reinout van den Bergh ist seit 2006 Kurator des niederländischen Festivals BredaPhoto. Seine Arbeiten wurden in verschiedenen Museen in Ost- und Westeuropa und Afrika gezeigt sowie in mehreren Büchern und ande-ren Publikationen veröffentlicht.

Eboundja is a project that occupies Reinout van den Bergh from 2011 onwards. Since 2009, the thirty families of the same-named fishing village in southern Cameroon are in great uncer-tainty about their future. The village is situated in the middle of a coastal strip where the Chi-nese, in exchange for Cameroon’s iron ore, are constructing a deep sea harbour. The inhabi-tants are vulnerable to the combination of a corrupt government and megalomaniac project developers. In a series of photographs van den Bergh shows, with great commitment, the decline as well as the intimacy and beauty of the small community; the resignation but also the pride and resistance. As of 2006 van den Bergh has been curator of the Dutch BredaPhoto festival. His work has been exhibited in various museums in Eastern and Western Europe and Africa, and published in several books and other publications.

Sorgfältig in den intimen Räumen ihrer Kinderzimmer in Szene gesetzt und umge-ben von kleinen Details, die ihre Teenager- oder gar kindliche Welt spiegeln, sind sie in die neuesten Kollektionen der besten polni-schen Designer gekleidet und ähneln so den Models, die sie in ihren Träumen sein werden. Frühzeitig abgeschlossene Verträge mit Profi-Modelagenturen wecken Hoffnungen und befeu-ern Erwartungen. Aber nicht alle werden in der heutigen Modewelt erfolgreich sein. Was macht das mit den Jugendlichen? Prominska (*1985) nähert sich dem Thema aus persön-lichen Gründen. Die Künstlerin ist selbst ehe-maliges Model und weiß nur zu gut, wie die Talentsuche in der Modeindustrie und der Druck, bestimmte Kriterien zu erfüllen, das Leben eines Teenagers beeinflussen können.

The book 12–17 (Waiting Room) is an impres-sive collection of portraits of prepubescent mod-els photographed by Zosia Promin ska. Carefully staged within the intimate spaces of their bed-rooms and surrounded by small details reflect-ing their teenage or even childish reality, they are styled in the latest collections of Poland’s best designers to resemble the models they themselves dream to become. Early contracts with professional model agencies for when they turn 16, create hope and drive expecta-tions. But not all will develop into the stan-dards of today’s fashion world. What impact does this create to these individuals? Prominska (b. 1985) approaches the subject matter for very personal reasons. The artist herself is a former model and knows only too well of the exploration in the fashion industry and how the pressures of fitting into specific criteria can influence the life of a teenager.

Kenji Aoki (b. 1968 in Tokyo) spent his forma-tive years studying various design disciplines at Kuwasa Design School. It was photo graphy and its ability to capture beauty in »a normal coffee cup at home« that changed Aoki’s world. Since then he has pursued the art of still life photography.»After a process similar to that of Zen dia-logues, I realized that what I was seeking was to be found in everyday life, the life that was right before my eyes. Our eyes see a reality shaped by our emotions. Not Vital (*1948 in Sent, Schweiz) gilt als Künstler-Nomade, dessen anthropologische Wissbegierde ihn scheinbar rastlos die Welt bereisen lässt, um die Eindrücke verschie-denster Kulturen in seinen Skulpturen zu ver-arbeiten. Tatsächlich ist er aber auch eng ver-bunden mit dem Ort seiner Herkunft, dem Schweizer Engadin, in das er regelmäßig zurück-kehrt. Aus diesem Ort und seinen Traditionen, den eigenen Kindheits- und Jugenderinnerun-gen, schöpft er ebenso Inspiration für seine Werke wie aus Bildern, Formen und Hand-werkstechniken fremder Kulturen. Vitals Arbei-ten zeichnen sich dabei formal durch eine bestechende Klarheit und Präzision aus und vermitteln gleichzeitig durch ihre nicht ein-deutig benennbare, archaisch anmutende Iko-nografie eine rätselhafte Zeitlosigkeit. Not Vital (b. 1948 in Sent, Switzerland) is re - garded as a nomadic artist, whose anthropo-logical thirst for knowledge makes him seem-ingly restlessly travel the world to process the impressions of different cultures in his sculp-tures. In fact, he is also closely linked to the place of his origin, the Swiss Engadin, to which he regularly returns. From this place and its traditions, his own memories of childhood and youth, he draws inspiration for his works, as well as images, forms and craft techniques of foreign cultures. Vital’s work is formally dis-tinguished by its striking clarity and precision, and at the same time conveys a mysterious timelessness through its not clearly nameable, archaic-looking iconography. The Museum der Moderne Salzburg presents a selection of sculptures with corresponding drawings by the artist.

Seit mehr als vier Jahrzehnten beschäftigt sich der Kölner Maler Oliver Jordan (*1958) mit dem Thema des Porträts. Das Ergebnis dieses Schaffens wird nun in einer umfassen-den dreibändigen Publikation gewürdigt. Der erste hier vorgestellte Band widmet sich Porträts namhafter Persönlichkeiten aus den Bereichen Kunst und Kultur und zeigt unter anderem bildende Künstler, Malerkollegen, Literaten, Musiker und Philosophen. Eine inten-sive, teilweise über Jahrzehnte betriebene Aus-einandersetzung mit der jeweiligen Person und ihrem Werk dient dabei der eigenen male-rischen wie persönlichen Identitätsfindung des Künstlers und ist darüber hinaus ein wich-tiges künstlerisches Bekenntnis. Die Publikation wird ergänzt durch Texte aus-gesuchter Experten, Sammler, Freunde und Weggefährten, die die Vielschichtigkeit von Jordans Werk verdeutlichen.

Since more than four decades, the Cologne-based painter Oliver Jordan (b. 1958) has been preoccupied with the theme of portraiture. The result of this work is now being honored in a comprehensive three-volume publication.The first volume presented here is devoted to portraits of well-known personalities from the fields of art and culture, including visual art-ists, fellow painters, writers, musicians, and philosophers. An intensive examination of the respective person and his or her work, in some cases over decades, serves at the same time to help the artist find his own painterly and personal identity and is also an important artistic commitment. The publication is accompanied by texts by selected experts, collectors, friends, and com-panions, which illustrate the complexity of Jordan’s work.

Die erste Monografie des in London lebenden kurdisch-irakischen Künstlers Walid Siti (*1954) zeigt Arbeiten aus 40 Jahren zu komplexen Themen wie Erinnerung und Verlust, Land-schaft und Architektur, Identität und Zugehö-rigkeit. In seinen ortsbezogenen Installationen, Gemälden, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen setzt Siti seine eigene Herkunft zur aktuellen poli-tischen Lage im Nahen Osten in Bezug. Seine poetischen und gleichzeitig eindringlichen Arbeiten schöpfen aus Metaphern und Asso-ziationen, die sich auf die ständigen Verände-rungen und Herausforderungen in dieser Region beziehen. Sitis Arbeiten wurden weltweit aus-gestellt, darunter im Martin Gropius Bau, Ber-lin, im L’Institut des Cultures d’Islam, Paris, und dreimal auf der Biennale Venedig. Sie sind Teil der Sammlungen des Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, des British Museum und des Victoria & Albert Museum, London, der Welt-bank, Washington DC, und anderen.

London-based Kurdish-Iraqi artist Walid Siti’s (b. 1954) first monograph presents an œuvre that spans over forty years and traverses the complex terrains of memory and loss, land-scape and architecture, as well as issues of identity and belonging. In his site-specific installations, paintings, sculptures, and draw-ings Siti draws on his heritage in relation to current politics in the Middle East. In his work he evokes a set of metaphors and associations that poetically, yet forcefully, address the ongo-ing changes and challenges in the Middle East.Siti’s work was exhibited internationally, for example at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, at L’Institut des Cultures d’Islam, Paris, at the Sharjah Biennial, and three times at the Ven-ice Biennale. It is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the World Bank, Washing-ton DC, among others.

Frauen in leitenden Positionen in der Archi-tektur sind weltweit in der Minderheit. Anders jedoch in Havanna, dessen Stadterneuerung beispielhaft ist und ihr Können beweist. Das vorliegende Projekt will Frauen im Bauwesen zu mehr Öffentlichkeit verhelfen und sie am Beispiel von Kuba zum Engagement in leiten-den Positionen ermutigen. Es werden die Leis-tungen von Architektinnen und Ingenieurin-nen in Havannas Altstadt gewürdigt. Zwölf kubanische Planerinnen und ihre Werke wer-den in Interviews und Fotografien vorgestellt, ergänzt durch Architekturpläne der Gebäude. Weitere Textbeiträge liefern Informationen zur Rolle der Frau in der kubanischen Architektur seit der Revolution. Neben wenigen kubanischen Zeitschriftenar-tikeln ist dies die erste Publikation zu Archi-tektinnen in Havanna.

Women in leading positions in architecture are in the minority worldwide. But this is not the case in Havana, the urban renewal of which is exemplary and proves their skills. This proj-ect aims to introduce women in the building industry to a wider public and, using Cuba as an example, to encourage them to become involved in leading positions. The achieve-ments of female architects and engineers in the historic old town of Havana are being hon-ored. Twelve female urban planners and their works are presented in interviews and photo-graphs, and further text contributions provide information on the role of women in Cuban architecture before and after the revolution. Aside from a few Cuban magazine articles, this is the first publication on female archi-tects in Havana.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Havana, this publication features twelve women architects and engineers from Cuba.
