Alongside its large exhibitions, Kunsthalle seitenlichtsaal is presen-

Die Kunsthalle Düsseldorf und das Museum für Moderne Kunst in

Warschau zeigen ein gemeinsames, zeitgleich stattfindendes Ausstel

lungsprojekt als Teil der Kultursaison NordrheinWestfalen in Polen

2011/2012: eine Ausstellung, die in zwei Orte geteilt ist und im Dialog

der beiden Räume einen imaginären „Dritten Raum“ entstehen lässt.

Das Projekt beleuchtet parallele historische Phänomene der künst

lerischen Traditionen an den Kunstakademien in Düsseldorf und

Warschau. Beide Akademien spielten eine wichtige Rolle bei der

Entstehung alternativer pädagogischer Modelle in den 1960er und

1970er Jahren, repräsentiert einerseits durch Joseph Beuys mit der

Sozialen Plastik und dem erweiterten Kunstbegriff und andererseits

durch Oskar Hansen mit seiner Theorie und Praxis der Open Form.

Die zwei parallel bespielten Räume in Düsseldorf und Warschau

lehnen sich an räumliche Situationen des jeweils anderen Ortes

an, indem sie architektonische Elemente von Hansens bzw. Beuys’

Klassenräumen an den Akademien aufgreifen. Sie fungieren so als

reale und metaphorische Ausstellungs und Produktionsorte für die

ausgewählten Künstler, die in der Nachfolge oder Abgrenzung von

bestimmten Traditionslinien stehen.

Die Ausstellung versteht sich als Laboratorium oder – mit einem

Begriff aus Oskar Hansens Lehrpraxis – „exercise“, die den Blick

in verschiedene Richtungen öffnet und sich im Laufe der Zeit ver

ändert. Mit Kowalski, KwieKulik und anderen zeigt Düsseldorf ein

in Deutschland wenig bekanntes Kapitel polnischer künstlerischer

Avantgarde der Nachkriegszeit, deren Erbe sich bis zu jüngeren, in

ternational tätigen Künstlern wie Paweł Althamer und Anna Mols

ka verfolgen lässt. Das Museum in Warschau präsentiert, ausgehend

von Joseph Beuys und der Düsseldorfer Akademie, mit zentralen

Positionen wie Imi Knoebel, Palermo, Katharina Sieverding oder

Franz Erhard Walther ein zeitgleiches Kapitel Düsseldorfer Kunst

geschichte, das zentrale Fragen aufwirft nach „learning“ und „un

learning“. Zu den noch nie gezeigten Werken in der Ausstellung

gehört unter anderem historisches Material von KwieKulik, die An

fang der 1980er Jahre eine Reise zu Joseph Beuys nach Düsseldorf

unternahmen, die sie filmisch dokumentierten – und die so auch als

ideeller Ausgangspunkt für die hier unternommene Verbindung der

beiden Orte dienen kann.

The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and the Museum of Modern Art in War-

saw are collaborating on a joint exhibition to be held as part of the

2011/2012 North Rhine-Westphalia Cultural Season in Poland: an

exhibition divided in two venues, that aims to create a “third space”

arising from the dialogue between the two spaces.

The project will shed light on parallels in the historical traditions of

the two art academies in Düsseldorf and Warsaw. Both academies

played a pioneering role in the development of alternative forms

of teaching in the 1960s and 1970s – in Düsseldorf through Joseph

Beuys with his Social Sculpture concept and extended definition

of art, and in Warsaw thanks to Oskar Hansen and his theory and

practice of Open Form. The two site-specific installations reference

certain architectural features in Düsseldorf and Warsaw, creating

specific situations typical of Hansen’s and Beuys’ classrooms at the

academies. Both venues will thus serve as real and metaphorical ex-

hibition and production spaces for the selected artists, who are car-

rying on or breaking with certain traditions.

The initiators see the project as a kind of laboratory or, to use a

term from Oskar Hansen’s teaching, as an “exercise”, which opens

up perspectives in various directions and changes during the exhibi-

tion period. In exhibiting the work of artists such as Kowalski and

KwieKulik, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is presenting a chapter in the hi-

story of the Polish post-war avant-garde, which was little known in

Germany until now and yet whose influences are evident in the work

of internationally successful young Polish artists like Paweł Alth-

amer and Anna Molska. Starting with Joseph Beuys and the Düs-

seldorf Kunstakademie and following on with key figures like Imi

Knoebel, Palermo, Katharina Sieverding and Franz Erhard Walther,

the museum in Warsaw is showing a contemporaneous chapter of

Düsseldorf art history, that raises central questions on “learning”

and “unlearning”. The works in the exhibition that have never been

shown before include historical material by KwieKulik, who tra-

velled to Düsseldorf in the early 1980s to visit Joseph Beuys. In the

context of this exhibition, the film they made of their trip provides a

conceptual starting point for the connection between the two cities.
