Here is some parent feedback from our recent learning conversations :
We loved seeing your prototypes and playing the spelling game. Thank you for sharing your learning with us!! Proud, really growing up - big improvement in self confidence and believing in herself. Very proud of how excited he gets about learning new things. Great to know areas we can help him with at home. She is doing very well in class and working hard in all her subjects. Great work, thanks for sharing with me. So proud of you!! It has been wonderful to see her love of learning blossom in your room. She is obviously engaged and progressing really well. He is enjoying his learning and is engaged in the activities. He enjoys school and his school work is going well. Thank you so much for providing this engag-ing and supportive learning environment. He is doing a great job with his learning and bringing home lots of news to share with his family about his day. It’s great to see him so happy and settled. I’m so proud of you! You’re my star. Keep it up! Lovely environment. I like the multiple ways we are teaching maths and giving kids different tools, so if they get stuck they have a fallback. We thought it was great how our child led the session. She is growing in confi-dence which is great to see.
This term Rangitoto team are focusing on dragons for our writing and inquiry. On Thursday, Room 18 got together with their buddy class - Rakino 3 - to complete a collaborative piece of art. Working together they carefully coloured in the 48 pieces of paper that when combined would make up a dragons face. The next day we met up again to show all the children the finished artwork and challenged them to think up some awesome similes to describe the dragon.
Here are a few of their great ideas: My dragon is as beautiful as a flower. Johanna My dragon is a big as the school. Cooper My dragon's eyes are as a sharp as an eagle's. Denham The dragon's teeth are as sharp as a pin. Stella

Kahui Ako Logo Design Competition
Our Oneroa Kahui Ako held a competition to design a logo for our group of schools. We received a wonderful 47 entries from our students here at Torbay. Our Kahui Ako student leaders selected the top 10 entries to forward to Mr O’Brien to choose the 3 finalists. These designs will join the finalists from all the schools in our Oneroa Kahui Ako and the principals will choose the top 3. The winning designer will get to work with a graphic designer to refine their design and it will then become the logo of the Kahui Ako. Our top entries are below. Congratulations to Max G (Rangitoto) and Micah S (hands) for the winning entries.
We would like to thank all those students who submitted an entry. There was a wonder-ful diversity and originality in the design ideas and thought and care was put into the completion of all the logos entered.

WHAT NOW SAUSAGE SIZZLE
A big thank you to all the friends and family who came along and worked on or supported our sausage
sizzle during the filming of What Now at school on the 29th July. Special thanks to New World in Browns
Bay, who donated all the sausages, sauces and bread as well as Milo that kept everyone warm.
We couldn’t have done it without their support. Over $630 was raised for the Dixon family trust fund.
Competition success
In the first week of term Room 8 entered a competition run by Kakapo Re-
covery to design a t-shirt showcasing the amazing Kakapo. We had lots of
fun learning about these precious birds and were very excited to learn that
one of our students Elsie B had won a special commendation. “When Mrs
Buchanan put it up on the projector and we scrolled down I saw my name I
felt really excited and proud because nothing like that has ever happened to
me before” Elsie Rm 8.

Thank you to all those from our school and the wider Torbay com-munity that came together and joined in the fun while What Now was filming live from Torbay! There was a lot of gunge, foam and amazing games played and some awesome experiences that we are sure will be remembered for years to come! If you missed coming out on the day or want to relive it, you can watch the episode on TVNZ on demand—here is the link to our episode https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/what-now/episodes/s2018-e25

Tēnā koutou
What a fantastic weekend we had when What Now visited our school. Thank you to all those people who
contributed to what was a happy occasion that brought wonderful smiles to all those that attended. What
Now is about unadulterated fun for children and the team brought that to our school in bucket loads.
It was fascinating to watch the live television team from TV2 set up and produce the programme. I had a
number of children and parents comment about the way they worked and the career opportunities that
were on display.
On the same weekend a number of us attended the funeral of Judy Baird, wife of Torbay’s past Principal
Bob Baird. Judy was a School Principal herself and mother of our immediate past Principal Wendy Sandifer.
While I am still only new at Torbay School it is very evident the influence the Baird family has had on our
wonderful school.
Judy and Bob have played an active role at our school organising people from the Mayfair Retirement
Home to come and read with some of our children on a Friday morning. This is a tribute to their commit-
ment to education and the wellbeing of young people, a commitment that was very obvious at Judy’s fu-
neral. Our condolences go out to Wendy, Bob and their families.
The Torbay community spirit was also very evident at the Zumba fundraiser for our PTA Chair Megan Sad-
ler, the hall was full of sweaty bodies pumping out the moves for an entire hour. I got very tired watching.
Congratulations to all those that took part.
Our role growth building programme is in its early planning stages and architects have been appointed. We
have been meeting regularly with them over the last several weeks and they will be presenting a concept
design for our new 12 classroom block to the Board at our meeting next week. We are hopeful that this
design will then be approved by the ministry and we can then share it with our community.
I attended a PTA, Fun and Food Fair meeting last night, Vanessa White one of our parents is leading this
committee and is doing a fabulous job. The event on Nov 2nd is going to be very special. The team will be
looking for lots of support as the Fair gets closer. One of the things we will need help with is the collection
of tables from various venues on the 1st of November. We will need a couple of strong people and a trailer
or small truck. If you can assist please contact Vanessa on 021 641 004. We also require the use of a power
generator to power some of the events on the field. If you can help us out once again, please contact
Vanessa.
Thank you to all those parents who took the time out to come to our learning conversations. This was my
first experience of this event at Torbay and I was very impressed with the quality of the interactions be-
tween children and parents. There was a lovely atmosphere around the school and I hope you agree with
me that it was a valuable exercise.
If you were unable to attend please take the time to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to
share their learning. I would also like to thank our staff for whom learning conversation week is a long one
at work. Thank you to our staff for not only being present on the night but also for all the work that lead up
to our children being able to talk and share their work in such a creative way.
Lastly I would like to thank you all for the messages of support we have received with respect to our strug-
gle to improve pay and conditions and ultimately the educational system.
School will be closed on Wednesday next week as we join a march up Queen St to emphasise to the gov-
ernment how much of a crisis we face if steps are not taken immediately. I apologise for any inconvenience
this may cause and thank you for your support!
