Goethe Trail – from Weimarto Grosskochberg

The Goethe Trail leads walkersthrough 28km of charming country-side from Weimar to Grosskochbergand its castle. From 1775 to 1788

the young poet often hiked to the castle 'beyondthe mountains' to visit his fiancée, Charlotte vonStein. The trail starts at Wielandplatz in Weimar. The well-signposted trail, with letterboxes andstamps at various wayside points, leads ramblersthrough richly varied scenery, charming villagesand magnificent beech and conifer woods. Themany places of interest along the route includeBuchfart's historical mill and unique hilltop castle,Neckeroda (the village of dyes), Luisenturm towerand Kochberg Castle – one of the jewels inThuringia's crown. Goethe noted that it took himtwo and a half hours to make the journey onhorseback. Walkers should allow themselves six toeight hours. Benches, picnic areas and traditionaltaverns invite you to take a breather along theway. Every year on the May Day weekend, there isa traditional procession along the Goethe Trail, starting at Weimar, Bad Berka or Blankenhain andending up at Grosskochberg.

Ilm Valley Cycle Route

Nature, history and culture –a veritable feast of things to seeand do on the 125km Ilm ValleyCycle Route, which goes through

small villages with enchanting churches and pastcaptivating manor houses, castles, museums andmills. Many of the route's attractions in Weimar, home of classicism, are listed as UNESCO WorldHeritage sites. The scenery on offer is just as var-ied: forests, meadows and pastureland float pastas the route winds its way along the rivermeadow. The Ilm Valley Cycle Route follows theblue ribbon of the Ilm from its source in theThuringian Forest, through Stützerbach, right upto its confluence with the river Saale near

Kaatschen-Weichau. Nearly every village andtown has its own sights or distinctive features tooffer. A piece of advice: give yourself enoughtime to be able to discover all these gems foryourself and to appreciate the Thuringian hospi-tality – as well as the local food and wine ofcourse! Maybe the best reason to try out thiscycle route is Goethe, who explored this country-side intensively, drawing both scientific and po-etic inspiration from it. His traces are everywhereyou go. Each section of the route has its own par-ticular charms – and the Ilm even has its ownmicroclimate.

Feininger Cycle Trail

This route of around 30km givesyou the chance to trace LyonelFeininger's progress around theWeimarer Land region, whilst get-

ting to know some of the artist's influences andadmiring a host of cultural landmarks. Feiningerhimself was a keen cyclist and always took hispencil and sketchpad whenever he ventured out.Explore at your leisure the charming villages to thesouth of Weimar within the Middle Ilm Valley con-servation area – a favourite haunt of Feininger'son foot or by bike between 1906 and 1937. You are, after all, in Feininger country. The well-signposted cycle trail begins in Weimar, at 8Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse, the main building ofthe Bauhaus University, where Feininger taughtfrom 1919 to 1925. There are large glass displaypanels at each stopping point, which for the mostpart show a Feininger painting of a particularchurch, with a grandstand view of the radiantoriginal.
