Alexander Nagel/ Rachael Cristine Woody, Washington DCExcavations in the Archive – An Update on the Ernst HerzfeldOnline Resources at the Freer|Sackler in Washington, DCIn 1946, Ernst Herzfeld donated the largest share of his papers to theFreer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Despitetheir crucial importance to the study of the art history, archaeology, andearly exploration of the Near East, the Herzfeld materials have onlyrecently been completely explored and catalogued at a detailed level. With help of major grants from the Leon Levy Foundation, and theSmithsonian Institution Collections Care and Preservation Fund, theFreer|Sackler Archives was able to undertake an ambitious project topreserve, digitise, and catalogue the contents of the Ernst Herzfeldpapers. As the cataloguing project nears completion, the Archives havestarted producing web products to package the Herzfeld materials foreasy use and promotion. In this presentation we will give a briefoverview of the F|S Herzfeld Archives contents, an update on currentresearch on the Herzfeld papers F|S staff members are involved in,present the cataloguing project and introduce the various web productsthat have been created or are in the planning stages.
