PREFACE OF THE PUBLISHERS
Jazz musicians from all over the world have created this “Real Faithbook” in the tradition of “Real Books” to enable people inside and outside of churches to discover the re-newing and liberating power of faith as expressed in old hymns. This collection links the tradition of church music with the avant-garde in an exciting way and closes the in-veterate, lamentable gap felt by many. Treasures of the past, rich in both musical and theological content (both elements sometimes found lacking in contemporary Christian music), are made accessible in a new way, conveyed in the musical language of modern people. Jazz, with its immense diversity of styles and influences, subtly transforms old hymns into a more contemporary mode of expression without watering down the intriguing musical structures and spiritual content of the texts. This book is a true treasure of huge benefit for churches and Christian communities of all kinds!Pastor Beat Rink, Director CRESCENDO international
It is our great pleasure to thank all the authors of this collec- tion for their inspired contributions to this first edition of a Real Book for hymns. We called it a “Real Faithbook”, as this book is truly a collection of stories about faith on mul-tiple levels. First, the faith experiences found in the texts of these hymns are what inspired the composers to create a great legacy of music. Second, the hymn composers them-selves often had difficult lives, but have given so much joy and inspiration to others by sharing their stories of faith through their music. Third, the faith stories of the jazz musi- cians who provided the arrangements for this book—and these 21 are just a small group out of many more world- wide—brought them to share the same passion: to connect the heritage of church hymns with the musical language of jazz, and with their CDs and concerts both inside and outside of churches. All of these musicians, in our time and in their way, continue the vision of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and many others who treated jazz as a spiritual musical lan-guage. They embrace jazz’s roots in spirituals and Gospel music, and its ability to express musically and personally the essence of one’s being through inspiration in the mo-ment and on the spot, with no boundaries and no safety net.
We want to give heartfelt thanks as well to the Brunnen Ver-lag in Basel, particularly Christian Meyer and Vera Hahn, for their incredible support for and trust in this project.
We have tried to find a coherent and clearly readable musi-cal notation and chord nomenclature, but as jazz is above all a creative art form, the musical notation should be read as an invitation to treat the music with freedom for your own interpretation. The arrangements in this book have different levels of complexity; the version which includes a stanza of the lyrics and a smaller title is generally the one we consi-der best suited for congregational singing as it contains the original melody. In order to aid the Faithbook’s sustainabi-lity and development, please visit www.realfaithbook.net, where you will find access to transposed parts in Eb and Bb, detailed information on contributors, upcoming events, and a growing database of other arrangements and projects.

All over the globe, Christian jazz musi-cians are revitalizing liturgical and sacred music traditions by connecting jazz with the rich heritage of church hymns. Jazz that is inspired by biblical scriptures and hymns is played throughout the world in churches and jazz clubs alike. This book is the first international collection of this global movement, and helps to bring peo- ple together who love both jazz and the church music tradition, and makes this music accessible for a larger public. It can serve as a source of inspiration for jazz musicians and composers to create their own versions of hymns and chorales, and enrich their repertoire for perfor-mances inside and outside of churches.Jon Cowherd, Pianist, Composer and Producer, New York City
Swing, my soul! With 250 arrangements of Protestant hymns and chorales by ar-rangers and composers from Australia, the United States, Europe and India, this collection reveals the soulful heartbeat of the Reformation in resonant vitality, and pulses with the “here and now” of con-temporary improvisation found in jazz. Beginning with the melodies and texts of Martin Luther, sung and played in nu-merous arrangements around the globe, these melodies of past centuries have grown new wings—the wings of our day and time. The chorales of the German re-formation are plaintive and full of laugh-ter, exulting and full of doubt, much like the hymns and spirituals of the English-language tradition. In this book you will find “From Deep Affliction I Cry Out to You” alongside “Be Thou My Vision”, and “In Thee is Glad-ness” sings out beside “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”.
How music transforms the essence of the texts—compre-hending, opening and spelling out in new tones that make the heart beat and awaken the senses—can be felt in each of these arrangements in a new and different way. Delicate and euphoric, tentative but with a full consciousness of God’s reality, the melodies dare a dialogue with the souls of the musicians and listeners. Listening must be practiced; understanding must be risked. These songs and hymns build bridges for us and confront us in an authentic way with spi- ritual life. They trust in a sound which is at home all over the world today and finds a listening ear in any given hour. May it remain so—jazz a fortiori!Klaus-Martin Bresgott M.A. Cultural office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany, Berlin
Neben „Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir“ steht „Be Thou My Vision“, neben „In dir ist Freude“ jubelt „Hark! The Herald Angels Sing“.
Zuhören will erprobt, Verstehen will gewagt sein. „Jazz erst recht!“ Klaus-Martin Bresgott M.A.
GREETINGS GRUSSWORTE

It was with great enthusiasm that I recei-ved word of the publication of the Real Faithbook of Great Hymns, which has to rank as one of the most exciting initiatives in the field of liturgical music in recent years. At a time when many people are asking themselves searching questions as to the relevance of Christian tradition for the future of the Church, this book comes as a sign of hope and renewal. The Real Faithbook is living proof that there can be a marriage of the best of our musical and spiritual inheritance with contemporary creativity at the highest artistic level. Let us all pray that through this collection the wind of the Holy Spirit would indeed “blow wherever it pleases”, and that we would “hear its sound” (John 3:8).Peter Bannister,Composer and Organist, Paris
In the tradition of liturgy and hymns, we draw from a well of common wisdom and inspiration proclaiming the love of God and Christian life as the body of Christ. This Real Faithbook adds a new jazz tone to the old songs and helps us in various ways to revitalize the tradition.
As an art form, jazz has the pulse of mo-dern urban life. Jazz embraces the tempo, fragmentation, diversity and individua-lism in our modern reality in its rhythm, complex (dis-)harmonics and in its way of combining composition and individual improvisation. In other words, jazz is voi-cing what Dietrich Bonhoeffer calls “the polyphony of life”.
Rooted in gospel and blues, jazz has its own tradition as sa-cred music. But in my view, jazz has as an art form per se an immanent sacredness or sacramentality. In improvising, the musician has to put himself, his talent and his professiona-lism at stake in breaking down preconceived musical ideas and exploring new musical ones in an immediate context. Playing is a devotional surrender to the spiritual power of music. This vulnerable live act of “break and share” is the sacramental core of God’s creation and the transformation of life in Christ. And it is the core of living liturgy and Chris- tian ethics.
I see jazz as metaphor for worship in our modern context. It has been very inspiring to me to work with jazz and jazz musicians in revitalizing the living sacramental aspect in the readings, prayers, reflections and communion in liturgy. With a strong focus on the love of God in the tradition as a cantus firmus, jazz adds to “the polyphony of life”.
I welcome this book and strongly recommend it. Play, pray, break and share!Pastor Palle KongsgaardGrundtvigs Church, Copenhagen

«Congratulations - this book can serve as a source of inspiration for jazz musicians and composers to create their own versions of hymns and chorales, and enrich their repertoire for performances inside and outside of chur-ches.»
Jon Cowherd, Pianist, Composer and Pro-ducer, New York City www.joncowherd.com/bio.html
«I see jazz as metaphor for worship in our mo-dern context. This Real Faithbook adds a new jazz tone to the old songs and helps us in vari-ous ways to revitalize the tradition. I welcome this book and strongly recommend it.»
Pastor Palle Kongsgaard, Grundtvigs Church, Copenhagen
