Part 3 – Questions 11-17: eBay typo

Read the text and then tick (ü) the correct statement. There is only one correct solution per statement.

eBay loophole: how you can make use of spelling mistakes

Many people who try to sell products on eBay make mistakes

spelling the names of their items. A great chance for smart people

looking for a cheap purchase.

Bargain hunters use eBay to find good deals on absolutely anything.

People often sell new, or almost-new items for very low prices.

What most people don’t know is that there is a loophole that could save you even more money – based

on the fact that you could find items other online shoppers have overlooked. The reason? Typos, or

spelling mistakes, made by the seller.

“Other people’s typos save you money” states FatFingers.com, a website created to find thousands of

misspelled product names on eBay. Created ten years ago, Mike Sheard set up FatFingers after having

discovered someone on eBay selling a very high number of bikes.

“I noticed a seller that was selling lots of bikes. He said he found them in his garage but he was selling

far too many for that to be true,” Mr Sheard said. “A little bit of research and I discovered he was finding

misspelled product names such as 'montain bike’ and 'mountin bike’.

"Because no other buyers were finding these sales, thanks to the typo, he was able to buy them cheaply,

because no one else was competing. He would then sell the cheaply bought product with the correct

spelling, making a good profit.”

Following that discovery, Mr Sheard went on to build a program that could find thousands of items listed

on eBay with spelling mistakes. The website and app (available for Android and iPhone) gives users the

chance to search for any item, and finds its incorrectly-spelled product names.

As a result, shoppers can find the product names that most people won’t. For instance, a silver necklace

was misspelled as “Jewelery” and was on offer for £0.01 with free shipping to the UK. It had no bids with

just one day until the end of the auction.

Other commonly misspelled words that eBay shoppers could profit from are brand names like 'Addidas',

'Samsun', and 'Kindel'.

Jonah Hill was born on December 20, 1983 in Los Angeles. Hill moved to New York to study drama at The New School. While writing and performing plays in college, he was given his first film role in ‘I Heart Huckabees’. He then started a TV and film career including his first starring role in the comedy hit 'Superbad' (2007). Jonah Hill Feldstein is the son of Richard Feldstein, a tour manager for Guns N' Roses, and Sharon Lyn, a costume designer and fashion stylist. Raised in a creative atmosphere, Hill had dreams of becoming a writer, wanting to join the writing teams of The Simpsons and 'Saturday Night Live'. Hoffman asked Hill to audition for a role in 'I Heart Huckabees', which Hill landed, making his film debut in 2004. A number of high-profile film and TV parts followed, including a brief appearance in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and a supporting role in 'Knocked Up'. In 2010, Hill tackled his first dramatic role in the film 'Cyrus', and in 2011, he co-starred alongside Brad Pitt in 'Moneyball', for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

You (1): ______________________________________________________________________

Rami: We have all the clothes we need, but my father and my sister need bicycles so they can

get into town.

You (3): ______________________________________________________________________

Rami: Yes, we have, but it’s not for my younger sisters and brothers. Are there any activities

they can do?

You (4): ______________________________________________________________________
