DIE ERFOLGSSTORY DER ORIGINAL SACHER-TORTE BEGANN REIN ZUFÄLLIGAls 1832 am Hof des Fürsten Metternich der Kocheleve Franz Sacher in Vertretung des erkrankten Küchenchefs ein Dessert für besonders anspruchsvolle Gäste kreieren sollte, war die Original Sacher-Torte geboren. Bereits einige Jahre später erfreute sie sich internationaler Beliebtheit. Auch Kaiserin Elisabeth schätzte die Torte des k. u. k. Hoflieferanten Eduard Sacher sehr. Nur die im Hause Sacher produzierte Torte darf durch ein seit 1962 verbrieftes Recht als „Original“ bezeichnet werden.

Für das Gelingen einer Original Sacher-Torte sind jedoch nicht nur die perfekte Mischung der Zutaten, deren richtige Temperatur und die Luftfeuchtigkeit in der Backstube, sondern auch die exakte Abfolge der 34 Arbeitsschritte bis zur Verpackung der Torte in den edlen Holzkistchen entscheidend. Seit 2009 wird auch eine limitierte „Artists’ Collection“ heraus-gegeben. Bekannte österreichische Künstler wie Hermann Nitsch, Gustav Peichl alias „Ironimus“, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Xenia Hausner, Herbert Brandl, Arnulf Rainer, Hans

Staudacher, Erwin Wurm, Heimo Zobernig, Gottfried Helnwein und Friedrich von Amerling haben exklusiv für die Sacher „Artists’ Collection“ das Holzkistchen künstlerisch veredelt. Die Original Sacher-Torten werden somit in einer streng limitierten Stückanzahl zu echten, österreichischen Kunstwerken, deren Reinerlös jedes Jahr einem anderen wohltätigen Zweck zugutekommt.

EIN STÜCK ZEITGESCHICHTE – MIT SCHLAGOBERS SERVIERT …Die Original Sacher-Torte ist auf der ganzen Welt beliebt und bekannt. Rund 360.000 Stück verlassen jedes Jahr unsere Original Sacher-Torten-Manufaktur und gehen in die ganze Welt. Das Rezept der Original Sacher-Torte wird seit 1832 von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben und in einem Tresor verwahrt. Nur so viel sei verraten: Ein wesentliches Geheimnis liegt in der Auswahl verschiedener hochwertiger Schokoladen, die eigens für uns hergestellt werden. Wie vor mehr als 180 Jahren wird die Original Sacher-Torte auch heute noch in 34 Arbeitsschritten manuell hergestellt.

THE SUCCESS STORY OF THE ORIGINAL SACHER-TORTE BEGAN PURELY BY CHANCE: One day in 1832, the chef de cuisine at the court of Prince Metternich had fallen ill just when high-ranking guests were expected. And so, it was up to the young apprentice cook, Franz Sacher, to create a dessert that would satisfy discerning palates – the Original Sacher-Torte was born. Within a few years it had conquered the world. Pastry lovers from the countries of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the rest of Europe and across the ocean in America treated themselves to the sweet delight from Austria. Even Empress Elisabeth could not resist the torte of Eduard Sacher, supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court. Following a legal dispute with competitors, a court ruling in 1962 stated that only the cake produced at Sacher may be called “Original”.

It is not only the perfect mixture of ingredients and the right temperature and humidity in the bakehouse but also the exact sequence of the 34 individual steps, right up to the packaging of the cake, that accounts for its success. Each cake is packaged in an exclusive wooden box, which makes an important contribution to the image of an Original Sacher-Torte. In 2009, „The Artist’s Collection” project was initiated.

Since then we have commissioned a limited edition Original Sacher-Torte with special packaging designed by a different renowned Austrian artist, such as Hermann Nitsch, Gustav Peichl alias “Ironimus”, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Xenia Hausner, Herbert Brandl, Arnulf Rainer, Hans Staudacher, Erwin Wurm, Heimo Zobernig, Gottfried Helnwein and Friedrich von Amerling, each year.

A PIECE OF CULINARY HISTORY … ORIGINAL SACHER-TORTEThe Original Sacher-Torte is the world’s most famous chocolate cake, with a recipe that has remained a well-kept secret since 1832. More than 360,000 Original Sacher-Tortes are produced by hand every year at our Original Sacher-Torte bakery. For more than 180 years they have been prepared with apricot jam, iced, and packaged in exactly the same way. The secret recipe, which only a few people have ever seen, is stored in a safe. A key secret to the torte´s success is the different chocolates used. They are specially produced for us. The Original Sacher-Torte tastes best with a portion of unsweetened whipped cream and a cup of Original Sacher Coffee or tea.
