Computer hardwareIt is almost impossible to imagine a home or a company without a computer.
Computer hardware refers to the devices and components which form the building
blocks of personal computers. Some hardware components are necessary for the
computer to function, and others are more like accessories which can optimise
performance and user-friendliness.
Look at the photos and ask your partner to describe them, to name the components
and to say what they are needed for.
What other internal computer components do you know? use your dictionary and
tell the class about their functions.

A | Internal components
Computers come in all different shapes and forms, but the main components that
make up a computer are generally the same. Each component plays a very important
part – and if just one of them fails, the whole PC may no longer work. First, there is
the chassis , also known as system unit. This is the outer encasement which houses
all the internal components, e. g. the power supply unit (PSU) which transforms
incoming power to the voltage needed by the computer and connects to the other
components. Then, there is the mainboard, a big printed circuit board (PCB) to which
most components are fitted, such as the central processing unit (CPU ) which handles
all request s and calculates all processes. Also on the mainboard you will find the
random access memory (RAM), also called primary or volatile memory, that hosts all
proccesses currently running on the computer. Sometimes you find expansion cards,
devices for additional features such as audio, graphics or internet access. Most modern
mainboards, however, have these integrated (onboard). Next, there is the hard disk
drive (HDD), the main storage device (also called secondary or permanent storage)
that holds all stored data including the operating system (OS) or other applications
installed on your machine. Finally, there is the optical disk drive . This is used to read
from or write onto external storage media such as CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray Discs.
Read the text above and match these components with their descriptions.

Module c | Telephoning
IntercUltUral Box
Intercultural awareness – telephoning in english-speaking countries
When talking on the phone in English it is important that you use suitable and
polite phrases. For example, if you know the person you are calling, it is common
to make a little small talk before getting down to business. One thing to
remember: Although it is common for English people to quickly switch to first
names, it is still important to remain polite and remember that you are talking
to a customer or a colleague, and not your best friend.
example: How are you? I haven’t spoken to you for a while.
If you have to give bad news or talk about a problem, then you should begin with
I’m afraid … or Unfortunately … .
example: I’m afraid we cannot install your wireless internet connection this week.
A request often begins with Could you possibly … or I would be grateful if you
would / could … .
example: I would be grateful if you would call me back later.
When someone thanks you for your help, or for a job well done, you can simply say You’re welcome.
And be careful! Whereas in German, just saying yes or no may be fine, this is considered to be quite
impolite in England. Instead, just say Yes, I think so, or No, I’m afraid not. If you call somebody, you
should give your name, where you are calling from, and say who you would like to speak to.
example: Hello, my name is Felix Hirschbach, calling from Crown Electronics. Could I speak to
Ms Cameron, please?
How would you say the following things more politely?
