221. Seoliiidae (Hymenoptera) (Results of the Zoological Expeditions oî Dr. Z. Kaszab in Mongolia)

By C. G. N A G Y , Agigea, Rumania 1

The Scoliidae ol' Central Asia have been known, since S T E I N B E R G (1962) , as a group of solitary aculeate wasps, more or less evidentiated taconomically. Their biology, though of considerable economic importance in view of their parasitic behavior on coleopterous larvae (Scarabeidae), is still relatively poorly known.

The Specimens collected by Dr. Z. K A S Z A B in his Mongolian expeditions constitute an important contribution to our knowledge of the Scoliid fauna of Central Asia, The number of collected specimens is 106, representing 5 known and 2 new species. The material is deposited in the Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural Historv Museum, Budapest. The terminology used for localities is chieflv that given by P A P P (1967) .

The author wishes to extend his sincere thanks to Dr. Z. K A S Z A B and to Dr. L . M Ó C Z Á R (Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest) for the loan of the material presented here.

Pronotum very coarsely and rather sparsely punctate, also mesoscutum, excepting a central shining area; scutellum and postscutellum more sparsely and deeply punctate; area horizontalis medialis of dorsal surface of propodeum coarsely but rather uniformly punctate, interspaces broad and shining; lateral shining area half as broad as the area horizontalis lateralis of dorsal surface of propodeum; mesopleurum wi th scattered deep punctures, less evident above impunctate area of lateral tubercle. First tergum more densely and superficially punctate except median area wi th a few scattered punctures; dorsum of second tergum much more densely punctate than that of first one; th i rd tergum punctate like first one; first tergum without median groove or tubercle. Wing membrane glabrous, dorsal aspect of basal half covered wi th sparse black setae; ventral aspect without pubescence.

cf — Unknown.

Holotype $ labelled: "Mongolia, Bajancliongor aimak, Echin gol, cca 90 km NO von Grenzposten Caganbulag, 950 m, Exp. Dr. Z. K A S Z A B , 1967. (Nr. 856), 27-29. V I . 1967" ; type deposited in the Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum Budapest.

Remarks. — This species differs from concolor in the vestiture of the body and the sculpture of the propodeum, in concolor wi th confluent, rather dense punctures and rugose interspaces on the anterior half of the area horizontalis medialis of the dorsal surface of the propodeum.

tergites sparsely punctate but not more on sides than in middle. Genitalia not studied.

Holotype 9 labelled: Mongolia, Bulgan aimak, 4 km S von Somon Daschincilen, 1200 m. Exp. Dr. Z. K A S Z A B , ' 1 0 6 6 . (Nr. 734), 23. V I I . 1966. V I I . 1968; types deposited in the Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest.

Remarks. — This is apparently a very rare and local species, resembling schrenckii and hirta in many ways, including the colour of the abdomen. Similar yellow spots on the second tergum occur in these two species, but mongolina may be separated from them by the following characteristics:

1. Femnles 2 — Males \ . . 4

2. Spatium frontale and posterior margin of mesoscutum punctate; second tergum with transverse yellow band hirta

— Spatium frontale and posterior margin of mesoscutum inpunctate; second tergum at most with two separate yellow spots 3

3. First tergum with an acute median tubercle at base of dorsal surface; only third tergum with a yellow transverse band schrenckii

— First tergum wi th a blunt median tubercle situated on anterior declivity of first tergum; second tergum with two yellow spots, third with a transverse yellow band mongolina

4. Second tergum more densely punctate on sides than in middle; only third tergum with a transverse yellow band, more or less interrupted medially . . . . schrenckii

— Second tergum uniformly punctate; second and third terga with yellow markings 5

5. Spatium frontale separated from the front by a shining deep furrow, punctures on spatium frontale small and rather dense," clearly differentiated from shining front mongolina

— Spatium frontale not separated from front, punctures of different size, confluent and without separate line between front and spatium frontale hirta
