    Prologue by Michael Ringier

    Our 2011 annual report is being published in the orm o a roll o lavatory paper.Reactions to this are likely to prove somewhat mixed. Theyve now denitelyreached the end o the roll at Ringier will, I suspect, possibly be one o the mildercriticisms we will have to endure. That is why I beg your indulgence or a ew lines,so that I can explain why no-one is better placed to describe a media companyscurrent situation than the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, the designer o this report.

    The proo o his eminent suitability or this task was provided by the major retro-

    spective exhibition o his work held a ew months ago at the Guggenheim Museumin New York. The Guggenheim was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the orm o arotunda. The visitor walks up or down a spiral structure. In ront o him stand thewalls with their art exhibits. Behind him there is huge void.     digital apprenticeship, it is that the winner takes all. Unless you are playing at thevery top o your digital market, you will soon be out o the game.

    Although the next ew years will probably also prove dicult, I am extremelycondent. In the last ve years I have experienced more change in this companythan in the nearly 25 years I had the privilege o working here beore that.Ringier employees do not see change as a threat, but as a challenge.     Ringier in 2011 Christian Unger, CEO2011 was an eventul and demanding year, marked by transormation, expansionand challenging business conditions or Ringier. Ater the setbacks the economiccrisis brought in its wake in 2009, and the positive, i measured, progress achievedin 2010, 2011 was another year marked by economic uncertainty in world markets.This was particularly noticeable in the second hal o the year, as conditions in allRingiers national markets proved considerably tougher than expected, putting ourbusinesses under pressure. The company nevertheless achieved signicant urtherprogress in implementing its corporate strategy, with substantial growth in itsdigital business and urther important diversication initiatives.

    Encouragingly, we also succeeded in strengthening our core publishing business.Following the successul launch o the BlickGroups Zurich newsroom, we establishedsimilar newsrooms in B elgrade (Serbia), Bucharest (Romania) and Prague (CzechRepublic), so that there, too, we were able to make the most o the synergies thatthese acilities create between individual channels and titles.     Thanks to our tradition o pioneering media work and the experience we have gainedrom several decades o successully developing and implementing new businessmodels, we are well placed to complement our activities in established, tried andtested businesses by breaking ground in new areas. Such ventures require a healthyappetite or risk and a willingness to experiment. Right now, or example, we arerunning a number o small-scale pilots in Arica, as well as looking into variouspotential business models or the apps market. The insights gained will help us tocontinue successully tapping new markets, both geographically and thematically.

    Building on the resounding success already achieved by its Beijing cooschool, opened back in 2 007, Ringier China opened another two such scin 2011, in Shanghai and Guangzhou. November 2011 also saw a comprelaunch o the Bettys Kitchenwebsite. This, combined with its popular iPand iPad e-magazines, online shop and appe aling social media presenchas resulted in Bettys Kitchennow reaching more readers through its dchannels than in its printed editions.

    Business PerormanceIn challenging market conditions, the Ringier Group turned in a sound, though reduced,operating prot perormance in 2011. EBITDA came in at CHF 64 million, versus CHF115 million a year earlier. This overall result refects both the extent o the changessweeping media markets worldwide and the renewed uncertainties plaguingEuropes economies. While 2011 started on a positive note, this optimism proved short-lived. The economic climate turned noticeably cooler rom mid-year onwards, with theresult that our revenues suered a decline which we were not ully able to osetthrough cost-cutting measures. The Ringier Groups total revenue in 2011 was CHF1,147 million, 9 percent lower than in 2010.

    The individual components o our overall revenue provide clear evidence that ourstrategic emphasis on developing our digital media businesses is correct. Turnoverhere was a substantial 19 percent up on its 2010 level. In our core newspaper andmagazine publishing business, conversely, contracting advertising volumes resulted indeclining turnover. Our newspaper and magazine businesses suered an averagedecline in advertising revenue o 15 percent. Fierce European competition signicantly

    ranc. The Swissprinters Group responded to the situation by decisively restructuringits capacity. These measures will result in the closure o the St. Gallen and Zurich sites.

    All the national markets in which we operate in Central and Eastern Europeexperienced economic slowdown and mounting competition during 2011. AlthoughRingier Axel Springer Media AG saw sales and earnings decline, we succeeded inmaintaining and in some cases enhancing the strong positions we hold inthese markets.In Hungary, besides not yet securing regulatory approval or our plans to merge our

    businesses with those o our partner Axel Springer, we also saw our perormancesuer as a result o the economic diculties acing the country.In Romania, conversely, our businesses did particularly well, despite the pronouncedeconomic slump. Thanks to a combination o acquisitions, the deployment o newbusiness models, and rigorous cost management, we were able to improve signicantlyon our 2010 results.

    Ringier Switzerland and Germany2011 will be remembered as a year o anniversaries. Lillustrcelebrated its 90th birthday,LHebdoturned 30 and Schweizer Illustrierteclocked up an impressive 100 years inprint. 2011 was however also a year o new uncertainties across the world. What hadstarted as a nancial crisis in 2008 became a debt crisis beore escalating into a eurocrisis characterised by the threat o sovereign deault. Its eects were ar-reaching,and Switzerland was not spared. By year end, the strength o the Swiss ranc hadcurbed economic growth, weakening the advertising market. Ringier Switzerland wasable to contain the impact o this thanks to consistent, ongoing implementation o its3-pillar strategy - ocused on its core business, digital and entertainment activities.

    During 2011, Ringier Switzerland generated some 65 percent o its revenues rom thenewspaper, magazine, printing and online news portal activities which make up itsCore Business. Expansion o the range o content published on digital platormscontinued.     Swissprinters GroupSwissprinters was conronted by challenging market conditions in 2011. Despiteachieving average capacity utilization o close to 100 percent, the company saw itsearnings come under pressure rom thinner margins and the accelerating decline inprint market volumes. The situation was urther exacerbated by the strength o theSwiss ranc and the resulting reduction in orders rom other European countries. Thecompany responded by adapting its strategy to evolving market conditions and initiatinga number o orward-looking changes. These included a decision, announced in October2011, to close the St. Gallen plant on June 30, 2012. The company had already investedin new 72-page web oset inrastructure in 2010, thus equipping itsel or its utureocus on industrial printing work. The emphasis here is on web oset technology andproductivity gains derived rom increased automation. Swissprinters continued to pursuethese objectives during 2011. This resulted in a decision to discontinue direct executiono sheet-ed orders, which are generally used in smaller print runs, in German-speakingSwitzerland.

    Ringier Hungary had to contend with a rapidly changing market during 2011, withconditions proving highly unstable throughout the year. Declining advertising volumes,diminishing consumer spending and rising unemployment all had a negative impact onnewspaper circulation. Ringier was not alone in experiencing these adverse conditions,which have unsettled the entire media industry and present a new set o challenges.

    Controversial new media legislation, enacted in January 2 011, is giving rise toconsiderable uncertainty in Hungary. Domestic publishers are devoting substantialresources to understanding the details o the new requirements and adapting their

    editorial processes to meet them, even though some parts o the new law were modiedin late 2011 at the EU Commissions behest.     Demanding economic and market conditions continued to conront the Romanianmedia industry in 2011. It is thus all the more remarkable that Ringier was one othe very ew publishing houses to close the year in the black. While highly eectivecost-cutting measures had their part to play in this success, it was principally dueto the new businesses and business models the rm is pursuing.

    The Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was born in Padua in 1960 and has lived in NewYork since 1993. Since the late 1980s, his works have provoked, snubbed, satirizedand generally held a mirror up to the arts world, with a range o objects so arresting,so immediately appealing and yet at the same time so ridiculously oppressive thatthey could not only plausibly have originated rom a prize-winning press photo o theyear, but also seem to be ridiculing the whole idea o the press photo.
