In Switzerland, nearly one in four households has a cat. Dogs rank second on the list of favourite companions, but birds and pocket pets like guinea pigs are very popular as well. The development of pet food packaging chal-lenges us daily, because pets have a keen sense of smell and taste.

The pet food segment is a steadily growing market; the packaging requirements it impo-ses are the same as for food. In this segment, we also produce laminates and stand-up pou-ches for dry as well as wet, retorted pet foods. For ecological and logistics reasons, we place great emphasis on „as much as necessary, as little as possible“ with respect to packaging material usage.
In pouches, we have repeatedly introduced innovations that are recognized as milestone accomplishments by the packaging industry. For example, we won the prize in the „resource effi ciency“ category of the AluFoil Trophy 2010 with the Xirah Swiss Premium pouch for pet foods. Our primary objective on behalf of the customer was to create a logistics advan-tage. Thanks to the optimized geometry of the stand-up pouch, display cartons can now accommodate 24 instead of 22 pouches,
which saves space in warehousing, in transit, and on the retail shelf.

Every day, the specialists in our development department are at work to fi nd new and bet-ter packaging solutions precisely tailored to the packaging content and consumer expec-tations. To assure that our solutions interact seamlessly with all processes to which they are exposed, we tailor them to the product and to the stress profi le, for instance on the customer’s fi lling and/or pouch sealing line.
We accompany each new packaging solution until it is integrated in our customers’ pro-duction environments and thoroughly test the usually complex composites on their machi-nes. It is on the machine that application technology factors such as sliding properties or sealability are crucial.
Quality assuranceOur laboratories regularly test new materials to determine their suitability for our composi-tes and conversion products.
Our test equipment:■ Tensile testing units for determining
interlayer adhesion and sliding properties.■ O2D units for determining oxygen
permeability.■ Infrared spectrophotometer for identifying
substances.■ Microscopes for determining layer
structures.■ Gas chromatograph (GC) for determining
residual solvent concentrations. ■ And much more.
