THE KATONA TWINS

The Hungarian born Katona Twins, Peter andZoltán, have given recitals throughout theworld including performances at the CarnegieHall in New York; the Purcell Room of the RoyalFestival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London; theConcertgebouw in Amsterdam; the Konzerthausin Vienna ,the Suntory Hall in Tokyo; the

Forbidden City in Beijing; the Alte Oper inFrankfurt; the Philharmonie in Cologne andTchaikovsky Hall in Moscow. Currently they areArtists in Residence in San Franscisco. In 2009The Katona Twins will tour The Netherlands,Germany and Belgium as soloists in the ‘Nightof the Proms’ series.The twins have won numerous prizes, bothindividually and together. In 2004 they wereawarded, with the prestigious Borletti-Buitoniprize, the first guitarist in the trust’s history. In1998 they won the Concert Artists GuildCompetition held in New York thereby securingmanagement throughout the USA; tours soonfollowed as did their Carnegie Hall debut. In1997 they were winners at the Young ConcertArtist Trust auditions in London and thatbrought with it London based worldwidemanagement; in the same year they success-fully auditioned for the Park Lane contemporarymusic group. Earlier in their careers the twinswon the S.T. Johnson Foundation prize in 1995and The Laura Ashley prize in 1996. In 1993they won first prize at the most prestigiousguitar duo competition in Montelimar, France.In the same year Peter & Zoltán won first prizeat the international guitar duo competition heldin Bubenreuth, Germany and were awarded theCultural Prize of the City of Kassel, Germany.The wide repertoire of the duo spans from

Scarlatti to Piazzolla’s tango music. Theirprogrammes also include concertos for twoguitars and orchestra by Rodrigo, Vivaldi,Piazzolla and Tedesco. Michael Berkeley, JudithBingham, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and severalother contemporary composers have written forand dedicated works to the Katona Twins.From the age of ten the twins have studiedboth individually and as a guitar duo in Buda-pest, Frankfurt and at the Royal Academy ofMusic in London. During their studies theybenefitted from classes with Julian Bream andJohn Williams.The Katona Twins have been invited onnumerous occasions to record for the BBC andother international television and radio stations.Their CD releases include music by Scarlatti andHandel; Rodrigo; Albéniz and pieces byPiazzolla, Granados, de Falla and Mozart.

DAVID GARCIA MIR

David García was born in Palma de Mallorca in1975. After finishing his studies in 1998 at theConservatoire of Palma de Mallorca, he went toMadrid to complete his postgraduate studies incontemporary, world music and flamenco alsobeginning his career as a freelancepercussionist and kit player. In the orchestralworld he has worked a.o. The Spanish NationalOrchestra, The Madrid Symphony Orchestra, The

Spanish Radio and Television Orchestra, TheRoyal Spanish Theatre (Teatro Real), The Balea-res Symphony Orchestra, National ZarzuelaTheatre Madrid (Spanish Opera). In Contem-porary groups he has worked with ProyectoGerard, The Gounod Ensemble, Camera 21,Neopercusión Percussion Ensemble.On television he worked for three years as a

percussionist with the Philharmonic Orchestrain ‘El Conciertazo’, an educational programabout classical music aired on TVE. He has alsorecorded the music for several film soundtracksas a session musician. In the world of theatrehe was the kit player for ‘Jekill and Hyde’staring Raphael, and the percussionist for ‘HelloDolly’. He has taught in various music schoolsand courses in Spain like NeopercusiónPercussion School and Manuel de FallaConvention in Granada. He is currently and has been for the last threeyears the touring drummer for the recordingartist ‘Raphael’.

JUANITA LASCARRO

Colombian born Juanita Lascarro began herstudies in biology in Bogotá, before moving toCologne to pursue her singing career at theCologne Musikhochschule and the Opera Studioof the Cologne Opera.Notable operatic roles to date include Lulu,Manon, Donna Elvira, Violetta, Fiordiligi andAgrippina for Oper Frankfurt where she is aprincipal soloist. Elsewhere she has performedJuliette (Roméo et Juliette) at Wiener Staatsoperand Bayerische Staatsopera, Poppea atOpernhaus Zürich, Daphne for Deutsche OperBerlin and Netherlands Opera, Manon(Boulevard Solitude) at the Gran Teatre del

Liceu, and Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) forOpéra National de Paris. At Welsh NationalOpera she has performed Liù (Turandot), Mimì(La boheme) and The Cunning Little Vixen, andshe took the title role in Pelléas et Mélisandeat La Monnaie. She is a regular guest at theTeatro Colón, Bogotá, where her roles haveincluded Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Michaela

(Carmen), Susanna and Juliette.In concert Juanita Lascarro’s performancesinclude appearances with the Leipzig Gewand-haus under Lothar Zagrosek, DeutschesSymphonie-Orchester Berlin under VladimirAshkenazy, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestraunder Antonio Pappano, and the GürzenichOrchestra under James Conlon. MANUEL DE FALLA

Widely regarded as the most distinguishedSpanish composer of the early twentiethcentury Manuel de Falla was born in 1876 inCádiz . After initial piano lessons he moved toMadrid to study composition with FelipePedrell. His first breakthrough came in 1905with his opera La vida breve. Between 1907 and1914 he lived in Paris and came under theinfluence of impressionist composers such asDebussy, Dukas and Ravel. Armed with theidioms of impressionism, Falla moved back toMadrid (1914) and composed works such as ElAmor Brujo or El sombrero de tres picos, whichare strongly influenced by the flamenco musicof Andalusia. In the 1920s, Falla altered hisstylistic direction, coming under the influenceof Stravinsky’s Neo-Classicism. In 1939 hemoved to Argentina where he spent his finalyears working on his cantata Atlántida. He diedin 1946.

The Spanish Dance is taken from the weddingscene of the opera La Vida Breve (Life Is Short).De Fallas first major work (and a winner of acompositions prize in Madrid) is a sort ofSpanish cavalleria rusticana. It was composedin 1905 but not premiered until 1913.

The first version of El amor brujo (Love, theMagician) a ‘gitanera’ or gypsy ballet in one act,was written and premiered in Madrid in 1915. Itis a love story about a gypsy girl Candela, whocan only be freed from the evil spirit of hermurdered past husband through the kiss ofperfect and true love.

Siete canciones populares espanoles (‘SevenSpanish Folksongs’ 1914) and Tus ojillos negros‘Your small black eyes’ (1902-1903) wereoriginally written for voice and piano.

M. De Falla’s work is strongly influenced by Spanish folk music in which the guitar is central.Although he composed only one piece for that instrument his inspiration was flamenco andearly Spanish music, including the guitar works of Gaspar Sanz. The guitar also features inFalla‘s first great success, the opera ‘ La Vida Breve‘. For this recording, we have selected andtranscribed works in which the influence of the guitar was dominant thus translating thesepieces back to their original source of inspiration. We felt that adding percussion wouldenhance the rhythmic element that is most characteristic for the music of Spain. We hope thatshowing De Falla’s work in this dynamic light will bring new audiences to his brilliant music.

When Sergei Diaghilev, leader of the BalletsRusses, saw the premiere of Falla’s El Corregidory la Molinera, (a pantomime in two acts), hedecided to commission de Falla to rewrite andexpand the score for a ballet. El Sombrero deTres Picos or, The Three-Cornered Hat was firstperformed in London in 1919. Sets andcostumes were designed by Pablo Picasso.Danza del Molinero is a farruca, which is acommon flamenco form and is traditionallydanced by men. Danza de los Vecinos is aSeguidilla a quick, triple-time Spanish dance.Danza de la Molinera is a fandango and it isclaimed by some to originate as a dance ofcourtship.

Falla’s only original composition for guitar:Homenaje (1920) was dedicated to ClaudeDebussy, who he met during his stay in Paris. Itwas premiered in Paris in 1921 strangely not onthe guitar but on the harp-lute. Miguel Lobetgave the first performance on the guitar a littlelater in Spain. The version recorded on this CDis the first edition published in La RevueMusicale.

Manuel de Falla, der vielen als derherausragendste spanische Komponist desfrühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts gilt, wurde1876 in Cádiz geboren. Manuel de Falla, né en 1876 à Cádiz, futgénéralement considéré comme le plus célèbrecompositeur espagnol du début du vingtièmesiècle. Après avoir pris des cours de piano, ils’installa à Madrid pour étudier la compositionauprès de Felipe Pedrell. Il obtint son premiervéritable succès en 1905 avec son opéra La VidaBreve. Entre 1907 et 1914, il vécut à Paris etsubit l’influence de compositeurs impression-nistes tels que Debussy, Dukas et Ravel. Armédes spécificités du langage de l’impressionnis-me, Falla retourna à Madrid (en 1914) etcomposa des œuvres telles qu’ El Amor Brujo ouEl sombrero de tres picos, fortement influencéespar la musique de flamenco d’Andalousie.
