JAPANS FESTIVAL SEASON

Japan is known for its colorful traditional festivals, and many of our itineraries were planned to coincide with some of the most popular celebrations.

AOMORI NEBUTA FESTIVAL

Among Japan’s summer festivals, Nebuta - named for the large “nebuta” warrior float that is the centerpiece of the parade - is among the most celebrated. This fabled festival takes place in the northern city of Aomori, and in addition to the namesake float also features in its colorful procession dancers, festival music and a fireworks display. A late-night departure from Aomori lets you experience all the wonder of the Aomori Nebuta Festival.

AKITA KANTŌ

This festival is celebrated in hope for a good harvest. A kanto is a bamboo pole with a number of cross poles attached which have 46 paper lanterns shaped like rice bales hanging from them, and is decorated at the very top with thin shreds of paper between wooden sticks. It is a special moment when everything stands still and then, with a certain signal, all poles are risen at the same time and the parade takes its start.

HIROSAKI CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Imagine a clear blue sky, majestic mountains, a castle and 2.600 cherry trees blooming in full pink glory – this is Cherry Blossom Fetival at Hirosaki Park. An experience you will never forget.

KAKUNODATE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Another great cherry blossom spot in Japan. Brought to Kakunodate by samurai families from Kyoto in the 17th century, the fascinating trees can be seen in the samurai district, where the trees line the street. In addition, you can find hundreds of cherry trees along the Hinokinai River. Join the locals with a picnic under the blossoms.

TONAMI TULIP FAIR

You will feel like in Tulip heaven. An impressive collection of three million tulips of different varieties from around the world is on display at Japan’s largest tulip fair.
