Das Estrel Berlin soll mit dem Estrel Tower erweitertwerden. Neben der geplanten Erweiterung der Hotel-nutzung um 814 Hotelzimmer ist auch der Bauweiterer Ausstellungs- und Eventhallen sdlich derSonnenallee geplant. Der Gewinnerentwurf wurdeEnde Februar nach zwlfwchiger Bearbeitungszeitim Rahmen eines stdtebaulichen und hochbaulichenRealisierungswettbewerbs vorgestellt. Nach dem voneiner neunkpfigen Fachjury prmierten Vorschlag,unter Vorsitz von Professor Zvonko Turkali, soll derEstrel Tower 175 Meter hoch und somit Berlins hchs-tes nicht-technisches Gebude werden. tion of the Estrel Tower, which will house 814 hotelrooms. The winning design was presented late thispast February following a twelve-week urban planningand architectural design competition. On the recom-mendation of a nine-member expert jury chaired byProfessor Zvonko Turkali, the Estrel Tower will reach aheight of 175 metres, making it Berlins tallest buildingused for a non-technical purpose. The tower will beroughly two-and-a-half times as high as the Estrelcomplex at present. Jury member and Berlin SenateBuilding Director Regula Lscher believes that conceptslike these are crucial for the development of the city.She explains, Mr. Streletzki demonstrated greatcourage and entrepreneurial talent 20 years agowhen he opened the Estrel Hotel. Now, hes made theexcellent decision to hold a competition for thedesign of another landmark for both Berlin and thehotel, here where the inner and the outer city meet.

The tower completes an ensemble already formedby the existing buildings, and provides a beautifullyproportioned forecourt for the Sonnenallee as well asa spacious public promenade along the water. Theconstruction of this elegant tower will create acomposite reminiscent of some of Scharouns archi-tectural masterpieces in the city.

Als Siegerentwurf krte die Jury, in der neben Fachjurorenauch der Bauherr Ekkehard Streletzki sowie Vertreterdes Senats und des Bezirksamtes saen, das Konzeptdes deutsch-amerikanischen Architekturbros BarkowLeibinger. Regine Leibinger und Frank Barkow habenmit ihrem Entwurf einen sehr eleganten Turm mit einerGlas-Metall-Fassade geschaffen, der mit seinem abge-schrgten Bereich die Spitze betont. Eine Skybar mit einerAuenterrasse in der obersten Etage soll zuknftig einenbeeindruckenden Blick in Richtung City ermglichen.

The jury that selected the winning design included apanel of architectural experts joined by Mr. Streletzkiand representatives from the Berlin Senate andNeukllns district administrative offices. Winner ofthe competition was the German-American archi-tectural firm Barkow Leibinger. The design submit-ted by Regine Leibinger and Frank Barkow featuresa wonderfully elegant tower with a glass and metal

facade that tapers up to highlight its tip. The upper-most floor will house a Skybar with an outdoorterrace offering a breathtaking view of the city.

Galas und Medienevents umfasst, genutzt werden. Beider Planung des Hallenneubaus wurde Wert auf grt-mgliche Energieeffizienz gelegt. Der Neubau gengtdeshalb hohen energetischen Standards, sowohl bei derDmmung als auch bei der Wrme- und Kltetechnik.Das geplante Investitionsvolumen fr den neuen

Veranstaltungskomplex liegt bei ca. 25 Millionen Euro.Die Fertigstellung ist fr Herbst 2015 geplant.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON A NEW CONFERENCEAND EXHIBITION CENTRE

The paperwork is done, and construction is readyto begin on the expansion of the Estrels eventcomplex along Ziegrastrasse 15-19 in Berlin.Built directly behind the existing Estrel ConventionCenter, Convention Hall II will house two eventspaces with an overall capacity for 5,400 visitors.

Occupying net floor space just short of 10,000square metres, Convention Hall II will increasethe Estrel Convention Centers total event spacecapacity to 25,000 square metres.

Estrel Berlin owner Ekkehard Streletzki explains,This new hall is part of our plan to further expand

our range of event services and strengthen our overalllocation. The new facility also represents our responseto the increasing demand from visitors around theworld for more space. This additional event spaceenables the Estrel to continue hosting events withoutinterruption even when resettings are underway in other

parts of the Convention Center. During conventionsand conferences, the new addition can better accom-modate exhibitions and trade fairs in their increasingneed for space.

Convention Hall II will consist of two multifunctionalevent spaces covering 1,124 and 4,566 square metres,

respectively. Neither room has columns, andfeatures 9- and 11-metre-high ceilings. Thesmaller space will hold up to 900 persons, whilethe larger space will have capacity for up to4,500 guests. A direct connection will allow thenew annex to be used separately or in conjunc-tion with the existing Estrel Convention Centerand 70 event spaces for conventions, congresses,galas and media events. Energy efficiency is a toppriority for the new building, and its constructionmeets the highest energy standards for insulationas well as heating and cooling technology. Plan-ned investment for the new event complex totalsaround 25 million euros, and construction isscheduled to finish in the Autumn of 2015.

Aber eigentlich bemerkt niemand, dass die hoch-kartigen Mens von jungen Nachwuchskchen amHerd zubereitet und anschlieend von angehendenHotel- und Restaurantfachleuten serviert werden.Was daran liegt, dass die Auszubildenden rundumperfekte Arbeit leisten. Diesen Mrz feierte das bun-desweit einzigartige Konzept seinen fnften Geburts-tag. Seit die Geschftsleitung des Estrel gemeinsammit dem Bezirksamt Neuklln, vertreten durch

den Bezirksbrgermeister Heinz Buschkowsky, 2009das Projekt ins Leben gerufen hat, konnten 148 Azubisaus dem Estrel Hotel ihren Arbeitsplatz fr mehrereMonate nach Britz verlegen, um dort das Restaurantund Hotel selbststndig zu betreuen. Die Azubis sinddie Zukunft unseres Unternehmens. Wir mchten sie
