PERCHE CRIDAST TÜ VADRET ?WARUM WEINST DU, GLETSCHER?
Riese» vergessen Sie deshalb lieber gleich. Denn ein Gletscher ist ein durchaus
dynamischer Ort.
pure «un gigante muto», queste espressioni potete dimenticarvele all’istante.
Scrocchia, canta, scricchiola, gargo
glia, gracchia, fa calare talune lacrime … è costantemente in movimento!
Perché sei costantemente in cammino?
Lontano dal freddo luogo che ti nutre.
Impassibile in discesa, dove ti trasformi.
Fritz Gillinger, 2014
WHY ARE YOU CRYING, GLACIER?
Anyone who thinks that a glacier would be immobile might say the same about the
minute hand of a clock. So it is best to forget terms such as ‘eternal ice’, ‘frozen
in place’ or ‘silent giant’ – for a glacier is quite a dynamic place. It cracks, it sings, it
creaks, gurgles, moans. Weeping many a ‘tear’, it is constantly on the move!
The glacier foreland of Morteratsch, where you are standing, was completely covered
by glacial ice over 160 years ago. The ice began to melt, creating new land and new
habitats: the first groves, a glacial stream, side arms, a tarn. The plants multiplied,
becoming lusher, more colourful and growing higher.
Many years later: the rocks are increasingly covered with plants, an alpenrose shrub
flowering in the most beautiful pink here, the first larch providing a soft shade there.
The newly exposed land is being transformed and you are a witness to this trans
formation. Make your way through this powerful landscape, towards the glacier, and
discover a fascinating world on the edge of the ice.
Why are you crying, glacier?
Is it the sadness of a farewell that overwhelms you?
For you are constantly in motion.
Away from the cold place that feeds you.
Unflinchingly downward to where you will transform.
Or are those glacial tears of joy over the new life that you create?

IN PRINCIPIO ERA IL GHIACCIO
Abbastanza scomoda, la Svizzera!
Accidenti, siete arrivati troppo in anticipo sul Morteratsch! 20 000 anni d’anticipo.
All’apice della glaciazione.
Ginevra, Zurigo, Costanza, Como, Garda e tanti altri.
IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS ICE
A quite uncomfortable Switzerland!
Oops, now you are here too early on Morteratsch! 20,000 years too early – during an ice
age. You are under 1,000 metres of a thick glacial ice shield covering the entire Alps.
In Italy, the glacier snout is nuzzling at Varese, in the north the ice edge extends from
Solothurn to Schaffhausen. The rest: a barren, treeless tundra landscape. Frankly,
Switzerland is barely habitable. But climate change is not a modern phenomenon.
10,000 years ago: temperatures start to rise, the ice age glaciers retreat after having
shaped the Alpine valleys. Huge boulders remain as well as wondrous ‘giant’s kettles’,
which can be seen at the Glacier Garden Cavaglia-Poschiavo, and – let’s take this op-
portunity for a big thank you – Lake Geneva, Lake Zurich, Lake Constance, Lake Como,
Lake Garda and many more.

(1857), «Gasthaus Garni Saratz» 2 (1865), «Hotel Roseg» 3 (1870), «Hotel Languard» 4
(1875) und viele mehr. Berühmte Gäste kommen. «Jeder Aufenthalt in Pontresina
verbringt 43 Sommerurlaube in Pontresina.

Altre seguono: «Zum weissen Kreuz» (1857), «Gasthaus Garni Saratz» 2
(1865), «Hotel Roseg» 3 (1870), «Hotel Languard» 4 (1875) e tanti altri. Spuntano
personaggi famosi.

ALL BEGINNINGS ARE CHILLY
It is beautiful here!
Such are also the thoughts of the first summer visitors travelling to Pontresina. After
initially receiving a chilly glacial welcome, the ice is soon broken. The first ascent of
Piz Bernina by Johann Coaz in 1850 encouraged summer tourism. In the same year,
Gasthaus Rössli1 opened its doors, followed by Zum weissen Kreuz (1857), Gasthaus
Garni Saratz2 (1865), Hotel Roseg 3 (1870), Hotel Languard4 (1875) and many more.
Famous guests arrived. “Each stay in Pontresina extends my life by one year!” physi-
cist Wilhelm Röntgen was convinced, spending 43 summer holidays in Pontresina.
Alexander Flury, who founded a company for high-altitude photography here in 1863,
captured the scenery that inspired the X-ray inventor’s vision.

Liebe Sportfreunde!
was passiert jetzt, vor 150 Millionen Jahren? Unglaublich, der Urkontinent Pangäa
bricht auseinander!
Cari amici dello sport!
NO SUMMITEERS WITHOUT SUMMIT
Dear friends of sport,
I am reporting from the Morteratsch Glacier with the sport report for Earth’s history.
It is 300 million years ago, volcanoes are cooling off, lava and magma solidifying, the
region’s first mountain ranges are developing! 200 million years ago: before me a
tropical sea, whose marine animal remains will make up the limestone rocks of Piz Alv.
And what is happening 150 million years ago? Incredibly, the supercontinent Pangaea
is breaking apart! An ocean opens up and on its bed basalt is formed, greenschist de-
velops. 100 million years ago another crucial situation: Africa drifts towards Europe,
creating the Mediterranean, its plate sliding over Europe’s, rock masses are folded, the
earth is shaking. What a spectacle, ladies and gentlemen! This is nothing more or less
than the creation of our Alps!

PIONIERS E CONQUISTEDERSPIONIERE UND GIPFELSTÜRMER
Inspirierend!
nina. Jetzt, in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, in sehr eindrucksvoller Weise.
Svizzero (CAS).
PIONEERS AND SUMMITEERS
Inspirational!
Alpinists and mountain guides are writing decisive and impressive chapters in
Bernina’s history during the second half of the 19th century. A time of remarkable
individuals becomes inspiration to generations of alpinists and mountain guides.
Pioneers such as the hotel owner and naturalist Gian Saratz (first ascent of Piz Julier
in 1859), the great mountaineer, physician and writer Dr. Johann Melchior Ludwig,
or Elizabeth Main, who climbs Piz Morteratsch in 1898 wearing a skirt. A revolutionary
act for an English lady at this time! Also worth mentioning are Claudio Saratz, who
ushers in winter sports here in 1880, and the local mountain guide pioneers, who found
the ‘Guide association Pontresina to safeguard the interests of mountain guides’ in
1871. Twenty years later the Bernina Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) is founded.

CUNTREDGIA FLURAINTABLÜHENDE LANDSCHAFT
Alles stabil!
Achten Sie dabei
auf Veränderungen. Wo steht die erste Lärche? Ab wann dominieren Steine über die
Vegetation?
PAESAGGIO FIORENTE Massima stabilità!
La natura non conosce stati definitivi. Figuriamoci i ghiacciai.
dro ferrugineo (Rhododendron ferrugineum) e Mirtillo (Vaccinium myrtillus).
menti. Dov’è il primo larice? Da quando le rocce dominano la vegetazione?
EVOLVING LANDSCAPE Everything rock-solid!
In nature there is no static state, especially not on a glacier. And yet botany knows the
term ‘climax vegetation’, a plant community that remains relatively stable and
unchanging. Let us introduce you to the honourable society on the foreland of the
Morteratsch Glacier: Swiss pine (Pinus cembra), larch (Larix decidua), alpenrose
(Rhododendron ferrugineum) and blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). They have had more
than a 100 years to develop, which is how long the ground here has been ice-free.
This ‘society’ needs good conditions – hard work that others have performed for them:
pioneer plants that grow on the barren grounds at the edge of the glacier. Our path
leads from the climax community to these pioneers. Pay attention to any changes.
Where is the first larch? From what point on do rocks dominate the vegetation?

Alles einsteigen!
in Betrieb.
AFFARI FIORENTI In carrozza!
«vecchie guerre», quelle d’avvenire dovevano ancora scoppiare.
FLOURISHING BUSINESSES
All aboard!
“Next stop Belle Époque!” – and how it truly was enjoyed in the Engadin in the 1900s!
The ‘old wars’ were over, the World Wars not yet here. A time perfect for developing
and transforming a fascinating, yet difficult to access natural landscape into a stun-
ning stage for tourist experiences in terms of nature, sport and health. An incompar-
able mix of Engadin alpine tradition and luxury that still accounts for a large part
of the region’s charm today. Dozens of glamorous hotels emerged, many of which are
still in operation today. The international clientele was enchanted and arrived
in droves. In the beginning, guests were picked up by horse-drawn carriage from
Samedan and taken to their hotel. After the Rhaetian Railway extension in 1908,
however, the route led directly to Pontresina.

Achtung, Baustelle!
BORN AGAIN OUT OF DESTRUCTION
Caution, construction site!
Of course, the glacier foreland is an impressive natural spectacle with gripping drama-
turgy, distinctive protagonists and great images. Yet, the glacier foreland is also a big
construction site with several concurrent architects. The main designer is the glacier
itself. The glacial shapes are its trademark: a beautifully smoothed valley shape here,
also moraines rich in scree, the glacier’s striae on the rock wall and a streamlined
mound of rock there. Tirelessly, the glacier is pushing and grinding, eroding and
accumulating, until others take over: such as water, pulling ditches, forming flood-
plains, triggering mudslides. Eventually, gravity lets rocks rumble into the valley.
Quite chaotic but the result is impressive, right?

DEVASTAZIUN E RENASCHENTSCHAZERSTÖRUNG UND WIEDERGEBURT
Hilf dir selbst!
ner weiter. Bauen Schanzen, veranstalten Skirennen – 1928 sogar Olympische Winter-
spiele in St.Moritz – machen Skisport zum Volkssport. Setzen frische Impulse: 1932
I turi-
Allora …
bisogna averla vista … infondo!
DESTRUCTION AND REBIRTH
Helping oneself!
Needless to say, people should not fight wars. But tell that to war enthusiasts in 1914!
When the shock of World War I and the subsequent global economic crisis hit the area,
tourists stayed away and, inevitably, hotels closed. But the people in the Upper
Engadin preferred to rely on themselves and carried on: they built jumps, organised
ski races and, in 1928, even brought the Winter Olympics to St Moritz, making skiing
a popular sport. They started a fresh impetus – in 1932, for example, when Simon
Rähmi founded the Ski School Pontresina. A historic ski collection can be admired in
the Alpine Museum – a must-see, needless to say!

angesagt.
CALA E CRESCE Tanti presi tanti spesi!
nulla in lunghezza. Cala e cresce. Complessivamente il ghiacciaio Morteratsch si è
accorciato.
RETREATS AND ADVANCES
You win some, you lose some!
Nothing in nature is a better indicator of climate change than a glacier’s length
development. In Switzerland, glaciers have been measured since 1878 and in large
numbers – currently 120. Here, patience is often called for: colder periods or a few
years rich in snow might let a small glacier grow, but not a giant like the Morteratsch
Glacier with its 6.4 km length. It reacts much more slowly, giving insight into the last
30 years. The mass balance measurements of the Morteratsch reveal that the glacier
has seen turbulent times: years with significant ablation as well as some in which it
hardly melted. Every so often there even was some accumulation (10 metres, for ex-
ample, in 2004). Back and forth. Overall, however, the Morteratsch Glacier has shrunk
in length – an average of 18 metres per year since 1880!

a salire!
Regione.
SETBACKS AND ADVANCES
Onward and upward!
The war has the world in a stranglehold, including neutral Switzerland and the Upper
Engadin. Vacation destinations become sanctuaries. Hotels are turned into shelters.
Green spaces become home to grain and potato fields. Food is rationed and each family
receives a piece of land to supply themselves. There is not much left of the area’s
former splendour, but the will to carry on is unbroken: in 1941, the first Swiss Youth
Ski Camp is held in Pontresina, the Chantatsch ski lift is constructed in 1937, and the
chairlift to Alp Languard is completed in 1945. ‘Ascent support’ both literally and
figuratively – onward and upward – not only for skiers, but also the confidence of an
entire region.

CAPRIOLAS SUR PUNTRASCHIGNAKAPRIOLEN ÜBER PONTRESINA
Regnet es?
Wirklich Pech!
eben «typisch Wetter».
conclusioni sui fenomeni climatici deve averli osservati e valutati a lungo.
CAPRICES IN PONTRESINA
Is it raining?
What bad luck! With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Pontresina almost always guar-
antees good weather. But such is life – and the weather. Not even the Alpine ibex, here
incidentally the largest colony in all of the Alps, can keep up with the weather’s leaps
and bounds. Extreme variations, which bring snow to the valley in July as well as warm
spells in December, are not exceptions but rather ‘typical’ weather. Such caprices in
weather are not related to climate change, however. In order to draw serious conclu-
sions about the climate, the weather needs to be monitored for quite some time, as
only the average of the weather conditions during the last 30 years, based on annual
measurements, can provide sound indications of the climate and its changes.

St.Moritz!

HIGH ABOVE PONTRESINA
All will be well!
The winter sports world meets in Switzerland in 1948: the Olympic Winter Games have
come to St Moritz again! Modest venues, few spectators, the athletes in dire financial
straits, yet a very symbolic moment after World War II: young individuals from 28
nations fighting for medals and not for their lives! Amidst them all is 27-year-old Edy
Reinalter from St Moritz. He wins Olympic gold in the slalom. The entire region now
only knows one direction: upwards! New hotels, guesthouses and more holiday apart-
ments are built. The needs for transport of the expanding crowds of visitors are also
satisfied: up to 30 passengers can fit into a horse-drawn omnibus and enjoy a winter
wonderland. The Diavolezza cable car lift, opened in 1956, carries up to 50 passengers
per gondola. And a skiing nation feels a little closer to the sky.

dell’anno precedente e li compatta. Gli interstizi pieni d’aria si atrofizzano. Cinque
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
Hold your breath!
… for a few hundred years. What you then exhale is interesting to science. The glacier
does just that: when it snows, millions of intricate, six-fold snow crystals fall and air
pockets form in between. The crystals change their shape, becoming round granules.
The following winter, fresh snow covers previous year’s snow granules – called firn –
and compresses them, shrinking the air pockets in between. Five years later, the firn
granules are now so close together that they form a water- and airtight layer of ice
around the air bubble: the glacier is holding its breath … until the ice melts. Or until
scientists drill a hole into the cold ice, causing the glacier to exhale. This air, trapped
for centuries, then tells researchers about the climate from that time.

Achtung Zungenbrecher!
nisch Sprechenden Tschinchtschienttschinquauntatschinch chatscheders chatschan
«Agid!». Apropos Beatles: Die nahmen 1968 «Hey Jude» auf. Exakt in diesem Jahr
Drei
Jahre vor der Gesamt-Schweiz! Übrigens: «Eis» heisst auf Rätoromanisch «glatsch».

Tschinchtschienttschinquauntatschinch chatscheders chatschan
tschinquauntatschinch chamuotschs
Attenzione allo scioglilingua!
Come quello italiano di «tigre contro tigre», eccone uno in romancio Tschincht-
schienttschinquauntatschinch chatscheders chatschan tschinquauntatschinch
chamuotschs («555 cacciatori cacciano 55 camosci.»). Ma la cosa non è proprio diver-
tente.
TALKING AND LEARNING IN THE MOUNTAINS

Tongue-twister – beware!
What “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper” is to speakers of English, Tsch-
inchtschienttschinquauntatschinch chatscheders chatschan tschinquauntatschinch
chamuotschs (“555 hunters hunt 55 chamois”) is to those speaking Romansh. As funny
as it may sound, it is not. For although Romansh is one of the four official languages
of Switzerland and the language of instruction in half of the Pontresina municipality, it
is considered endangered. Some are indifferent about this fact, others not: initiatives
are forming, rappers rapping in Romansh, and on the CD ‘Ils Beatles per rumauntsch’
the song ‘Help!’ becomes ‘Agid!’. Speaking of the Beatles: they recorded their song
‘Hey Jude’ in 1968, which was exactly the year when women in Pontresina received the
right to vote at the municipal level. Three years prior to the rest of Switzerland! By the
way: the Romansh word ‘glatsch’ means ‘ice’.

An anderer
Avanti a tutta forza!
e forme, creando argini, quindi «morene». Un fenomeno evidente del ghiacciaio e la
formazione rocciosa chiamata «roccia montonata».

Life leaves traces – and so does the glacier. It is a determined designer, digging its broad
sole into the valley. The glacier foreland also feels its power: here, it has deposited
rocks of different shapes and sizes, creating ramparts also known as moraines. An
eye-catching feature on the glacier is the ‘roche moutonnée’, otherwise known as
sheepback. It is a rock formation created by the passing glacier, giving it both a stream-
lined flat and a sharp steep edge. Tracks the glacier has left in the rock appear like
the work of a creative sculptor: the debris carried by the glacier scrapes the scratches
and grooves into the rock, leaving behind a bizarre pattern. Elsewhere, in turn, sand
and rock flour have ensured that the rock surface shines as if freshly polished.

l’inglese Sir Benjamin Johnson.
costruzioni d’architettura sacra grigionese.

Engadin historic houses, repeatedly extended and renewed, just like life itself. Fur-
thermore, the hotel buildings reflect the flourishing period of the hospitality industry
in the mountain resort. And finally there is the church of Santa Maria, with its colour-
ful frescoes and paintings, whose history goes back to the 12th century. Reformation,
amongst others, has over time blurred its traces. Since its restoration in 1977, the little

legenheit» gerne in Anspruch.
So erhalten
gen Bahnhofs.
L’IRRESISTIBILE VIAGGIO
Giù a Valle!
all’altra.
THE IRRESISTIBLE JOURNEY
Downhill!
Here, winter athletes are not the only ones who whiz down into the valley. Also the
glacier is drawn downhill. Though ‘whizzing’ might be slightly exaggerated. However,
approximately five billion tonnes of ice moves at a speed of 0.000005 km/h (40 metres
per year). And not only that: rocks from every corner of Val Morteratsch are happy to
hitch a ride, coming to meet in the moraines. The mighty walls of the glacier’s lateral
moraines can be used for a thought experiment: connect the upper edges of the
moraines from one side of the valley to the other, which gives you an idea of the
record-breaking expansion the glacier had at its maximum size in the years 1850–1860.
This was the result of the Little Ice Age. But even in colder periods, the terminus
(snout) of the Morteratsch Glacier was never far below the present site of the railway
station.

IL CLAM IRRESISTIBELDAS UNWIDERSTEHLICHE RUFEN
Mort Aratsch! 1
L’IRRESISTIBILE RICHIAMO
Mort Aratsch! 1
1 In romancio per «Aratsch è morta!»
THE IRRESISTIBLE CALL
Mort Aratsch! 1
Could you hear that? A female voice calling? Doleful and heartrending? But perhaps it
is only the wind and the awe-inspiring mountains, which remind us of the old tales,
like the one about the beautiful mountain fairy-queen that lured countless hunters
and farmers to their deaths. She is said to have lived on the Diavolezza. Knowing that
the Romansh word ‘Diavolezza’ means ‘she-devil’ can be unsettling to the imagin-
ation. A few facts as diversion: the Diavolezza (2,978 m) has a view of the Morteratsch
and Pers glaciers and is a popular ski resort with a 10-km-long glacier ski run to
Morteratsch as a highlight. The aerial cable car Bernina–Diavolezza was built in 1956,
modernised in 1980, equipped with completely new gondolas in 2011, and leads right
to the summit … but wait … could you hear that?

EXPLORERS ON MORTERATSCH
Let’s get started!
The closer the glacier terminus (snout), the more inhospitable the soil appears: sand,
rubble, rocks – nothing grows here! On the contrary, there are specialists for harsh
conditions: pioneers such as the moss-like saxifraga (rockfoil). Though it might not
break rocks, it does love rock crevices and scree slopes. There it settles, providing for a
compacted ground and delighting us in summer with its white-orange-yellow-dotted
flowers. In this humus layer built by saxifrages and their likes, the next group of plants
sinks roots 10 to 15 years later, including willows, larches and green alder. The pinnacle
(level 3) of botanical settlement history on Morteratsch is climax species such as Swiss
pine, alpenrose or alpine juniper as well as the typical larch-pine forests, which spread
in areas that used to be full of ice some 100 years earlier.

visitare l’esposizione temporanea. E poi? Poi senza stress, di nuovo shopping.
THE TREASURY OF PONTRESINA
Travel back in time!
Via Maistra, the shopping street of Pontresina, offers cheeses, chocolates, sportswear,
watches, flowers, souvenirs, health and beauty products, decoration, furniture –
almost anything can be bought here. Chesa Delnon, the building at Via Maistra 199,
however, is different. The municipality purchased this 300-year-old house, along with
its precious interiors, in 1984. Then the Alpine Museum opened here in 1986 on the
initiative of the Mountain Guides Association Pontresina. When entering the building,
one steps into a different time. It is an exploration through Pontresina’s history, its
development from mountain village to mountain resort. One can discover an excep-
tional audio archive of bird calls, encounter impressive collections of minerals, learn
about flora and fauna, the history of mountaineering and winter sports in the Engadin
mountains, as well as wander through the current temporary exhibition. And after-
wards? How about more shopping!

LA SCHMUNTEDA DA LA MUNTAGNADIE ABFAHRT VOM BERG
THE DESCENT FROM THE MOUNTAIN
And it does move!
You can stand here as long as you wish – you will not notice the glacier’s movement.
But it does move! Why? Firstly, because ice crystals shift against each other, secondly
because it slides into the valley on the glacier’s bed of rock and scree, with glacial
meltwaters acting as a ‘lubricant’. Due to friction with underlying rocks, the slowest
flowing parts of the glacier are its bed and edges. It moves fastest at the glacier surface
and in the middle. On average, the Morteratsch Glacier moves at speeds of 20 to 40
metres per year. Such masses leave traces – be it scree, ice towers or the famous cre-
vasses resulting from tensions in the ice.

IL S-CHAZI ILLA MUNTAGNADER SCHATZ IM BERG Vorsicht, zerbrechlich!
2000 Einwohner hat Pontresina. Plus 5000 Gäste in der Hochsaison. Gut für’s
Geschäft, aber auch eine grosse Herausforderung. Für die Infrastruktur, das soziale
Gefüge, die Lebensqualität, die Umwelt. Die Gemeinde Pontresina ist sich dieser Tat-
sache bewusst. So setzt
abitanti, turismo, lavoro e politica.
turismo, economia e popolazione.
MOUNTAIN TREASURE Handle with care!
2,000 people live in Pontresina – plus 5,000 guests in high season. Good for business,
but also a great challenge for the infrastructure, social fabric, quality of life and the
environment. The municipality of Pontresina is aware of this fact. Knowing of the pre-
cious treasure for which it is responsible, it advocates environmental protection,
having already very early declared nature and landscape conservation areas. Traffic
concepts have been developed, parking spaces created and an understanding between
the general public and landscape agreed on. This has led to a general principle, jointly
formulated by the residents, tourism, commerce and politicians. The goal for the
future of Pontresina is the sustainable and controlled development of tourism, the
economy and population.

LA FORZA DAL BUONDERDIE KRAFT DER NEUGIER
Interessant!

stazione comodamente a piedi.

THE POWER OF CURIOSITY
Interesting!
Perhaps the prayers sent to heaven out of fear of the glacier expanding threateningly
towards the village around 1860 have been heard? Since that time, the Morteratsch
Glacier has been on the retreat! Whether it was growing or shrinking, the glacier and
its deglaciated foreland have always been the subject of scientific curiosity: firstly,
because it is conveniently accessible from the railway station by foot, but, above all,
because of its function as a climate archive, global thermometer and outdoor labora-
tory for ecosystems. Of course, it is not just about acquiring scientific knowledge, but
also about economic interests and correctly assessing the threats posed by avalanches,
land- and mudslides as well as debris flows, in order to initiate remedial measures.

LA FORZA DA LAS MUNTAGNASDIE KRAFT DER BERGE Stark!
richiesta a casa. Nulla di virtuale: Alp-Schaukäserei Morteratsch. In estate il casaro
produce all’aperto giornalmente sul fuoco il formaggio Gletscher-Mutschli, formaggio
d’Alpe Heutaler e altro.
THE POWER OF THE MOUNTAINS
Strong!
The Culture and Congress Centre, opened in 1997, is located in the centre of Pontresina
and is a venue for conferences, concerts and banquets. It offers breathtaking
panoramic views and an impressive façade of Soglio quartzite, which was mined from
mountains near Pontresina. Rocks from the surroundings have always served as
a building material in this area, and have become symbols of the power of the moun-
tains. The Spaniola tower was also built from them in 1210. It served as a ‘customs
station’ for freight haulers transporting goods over mountain passes. The power of the
mountains can also be felt when recharging one’s batteries in the Bellavita Pool & Spa.
It can also be ‘delivered’ to one’s home in the form of the ‘glacier fondue’, which the
Pontresina Dairy ships in bags. Worth a visit is the Alpine Show Dairy Morteratsch,
where, in summer, the cheesemaker daily produces cheeses such as Glacier Mutschli,
Heutaler and more – over an open fire.

DAL CRESCHER E DAL CHALERVOM ZU- UND ABNEHMEN
Hunger!
L’equilibrio è riconoscibile in tarda
OF WAXING AND WANING
Hungry!
Even a glacier needs food. Its ‘fodder’, snow that does not melt in the summer, is
condensed over the years and then turned into ice. This occurs in the upper part,
known as the accumulation zone. While this glacial ‘dining room’ is covered with snow
all year round, the snow melts away in summer in the lower part, also known as the
ablation zone. At the dividing line between the accumulation and ablation zones, the
refreezing and melting of ice are balanced. This equilibrium line is visible in late
summer as the snow line. Towards the end of summer, you can estimate the mass
balance of the glacier yourself: it is in equilibrium when two thirds of the surface is
covered with snow. In case of less snow, the mass balance is negative, whereas more
snow means the glacier is growing.

Delizioso!
a Potresina. Quindi anche lui un espatriato …
OF WAXING AND WANING
Delicious!
When hardship becomes unbearable, one could emigrate. Today, millions do so around
the world. From the 15th to 19th century, however, the Grisons emigrated. Some as
mercenaries, the Engadins as … confectioners! Whether it was the inspiration of
snow-frosted mountains or the assertiveness of a diligent mountain people – Engadin
confectioners conquered the world! Those enjoying a piece of Engadin cake on Via
Maistra in Pontresina today will fully understand. Yet even more culinary temptations
await: Engadin beer, wine, cigars, hay truffles and, of course, excellent restaurants
serving both local specialties and international cuisine. By the way: the inventor of the
Engadin cake, Johann Friedrich Kochendörfer, came from Württemberg (GER) to
Pontresina in the 1890s. So he too was an expatriate …

dern entspricht.
PEAK PERFORMANCE ON THE GLACIER
The glacier packs a punch!
We could send 38,984 football (soccer) players onto the (ice) field at once, hide the Eiffel
Tower and make a 20-storey skyscraper disappear – if we wanted to. These numbers
prove that not only athletes are capable of ‘peak’ performances. The Morteratsch
Glacier is truly remarkable: its highest point is at 3,900 metres, the tip of the glacier
terminus reaches down to 2,060 metres above sea level. Together with the Pers Glacier,
which joins the Morteratsch Glacier below the rock formation Isla Persa, the total
area of ice is 16 km2, which corresponds to 1,772 football (soccer) fields. Its thickness
is also impressive: 70 metres on average, 300 metres at its thickest part below Piz
Morteratsch – enough space for the Eiffel Tower to disappear under the ice, except for
its antenna tip.

anderem zweimal Olympische Winterspiele in St.Moritz, Alpine Ski-WM in St.Moritz/
Pontresina (2004).
TOUR DE FORCE ON THE MOUNTAIN
«Voglio vedere le mie montagne!»
“I want to see my mountains!” were the last words of the famous landscape painter
Giovanni Segantini before he died in the cabin on Schafberg in 1899. The hut was
purchased by the municipality of Pontresina in 2004 and carries Segantini’s name. The
inspiring mountain scenery enables people to accomplish great achievements and find
new strength. Artists and winter sport enthusiasts alike appreciate this fact, especially
as sport events have a long tradition here. The Olympic Winter Games were held in
St Moritz twice, the Alpine World Ski Championships in St Moritz / Pontresina in 2003
and the Swiss cross-country championships Pontresina in 2004, among others. For
2017, St Moritz once again has been chosen as venue for the Alpine World Ski Cham-
pionships. The top winter sports region around Pontresina does not only offer excel-
lent ski runs and perfectly groomed cross-country trails, it also has a cross-country
skiing centre with a school. The Engadin Ski Marathon, the largest cross-country ski
event in Switzerland, is an annual highlight every March.

DVAINTA LA LAUNGIA MÜTTA?LOCKERE ZUNGE Faszinierend!
In ogni caso
A WET SNOUT Fascinating!
January 2009: mountain guides climb through a hole that has formed in the snout of
the Morteratsch Glacier to its bed. Down below, a huge glacier cave awaits them,
breathtakingly beautiful with smooth, shimmering blue walls. They discover two more
caves and thus probably one of Switzerland’s largest glacier cave systems. They were
formed by melt water that carved a channel into the ice. And there was support from
above. The water of small lakes that form on the glacier’s surface may become warm.
When reaching 4°C it is at its heaviest and sinks, increasing the runoff as well as
the cave size itself. This is an impressive but transitory spectacle, as glacier caves are
usually unstable. In any case, it is a sign that the glacier has lost mass in recent years.

ATMOSFERA LEGGERA Buon divertimento!
o folcloristica, spettacoli teatrali e cabaret.
I tavoli
EASY FEELING Have a good time!
Singing, dancing, celebrating – great pleasures in Pontresina. The Convention and
Event Centre can be the focal point of any event. There, one can listen to classical
orchestras, indulge in pop, jazz or folk music, and enjoy theatre plays as well as revues.
In the summer months, locals and visitors alike enjoy the vibrant Laret market,
extending from the convention centre through the Laret quarter to Schloss Hotel. The
tables are laden with delicacies such as raclette breads and Veltliner wines. Jewellery
and hand-painted toys sparkle enticingly, while the music is playing. Performances
can also be appreciated during the daily morning concerts of Camerata Pontresina –
a legendary orchestra, which celebrated its centennial in 2010. The equally legendary
Rhaetian Railway received an award in 2008, when the Albula/Bernina line was de-
clared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Schauen Sie!
A GLANCE INTO THE FUTURE
Look!
A vision for 2050: like all Alpine glaciers, the Morteratsch Glacier has also suffered
from glacier retreat. The route from the station to the glacier terminus is 5 km long. A
large lake has formed below Piz Morteratsch and new mounds of rock have emerged
at the edge of the glacier, some have even broken through the ice. In Val Morteratsch,
big changes are taking place – caused and reflected by the glacier. Looking closely, one
can see these developments and react accordingly, taking measures to preserve the
treasure that was given to us in this fascinating, exhilarating and stirring Alpine land-
scape. For the people of today as well as those of 2050 and beyond: look at the glacier
and thus into your own future!

«Senza Pontresina non so stare!» 1
dibile architettura, splendide feste e tanto altro.
riflessione.
1 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845–1923)
A GLANCE INTO THE FUTURE
“I could not live without Pontresina!” 1
Let’s be frank: the glaciers and mountains of the Upper Engadin do not need us. But we
need them: as a source of vigour, as teacher, healer and inspirer, economic factor,
work and leisure space – as lifeblood. The region draws from this source and its
impres sive traces: an unprecedented tourism success story, one of the world’s most
beautiful train journeys, celebrity guests, amazing hosts, pioneering mountaineers
and winter sport athletes, a distinctive architecture, radiant festivals and much more.
The Pontresina and Bernina glaciers have big plans and the future will show how
these projects develop. But one thing is certain: the glaciers, mountains and nature
will always be at the core of all things.
