Sergei Rachmaninoff

Cinque Canzoni Italiane

Those 5 Italian songs are simple in their nature and tonal character. Nevertheless, their beauty and profound emotions make them some of the most beautiful pieces in the Italian repertoire. Of the 3 composers, only Bellini wrote operas, yet, his vast musical output does not overshadow the stylistic abilities of Donaudy and Tosti. As a matter of fact, it makes them rare gems among the great Italian composers.

Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827

The six songs of An die ferne Geliebte go beyond a chronological narrative. Beethoven called it Liederkreis an die ferne Geliebte (a ring of song for a distant beloved). It is so written that the theme of the first song reappears as the conclusion of the last, forming a ring in the figurative sense as a token of love and eternity. This thematic revolution is also woven in the emotion and conceit of the words chosen by the poet Carl Loewe.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, 1770-1827

Rachmaninoff found his most profound inspiration at tranquility of his estate in Ivanovka. It was there, in June 1912, where the composer employed less than two weeks to set music to 13 poems and a song without words. He bound them together as Opus 34 entitled 14 Romances. The composer’s luck and interest in the field of Art Songs was extinguished in 1917 and never again resumed after his escape from Russia due to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Artwork

Austin K Brown is an artist of extraordinary talent which he displays through the iconic brush work in his playfully energetic watercolor paintings. His energy and curiosity for life is a theme throughout his watercolors and extended body of work in various mediums.

Please take a minute to watch it and leave a comment or a message. Finally, another part of the gallery does function as a visual aid to parallel the songs of the recital. You can find some more descriptions in the brochures at the Lobby.
