M 5 St Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec
Find out how people celebrate midsummer in Quebec.
A national day for the province
Quebec is the French speaking province of Canada. There St Johns Day on 24 June
is a public holiday. Many shops are closed on that day. St Johns Day is also called
St Jean Baptiste Day or the National Holiday of Quebec.
The holiday has been a French-
Canadian patriotic celebration
since the 19th century. Many peo-
ple wear white and blue clothes,
the colours of Quebecs lag. At
a concert in 2009 in Quebec
City two bands wanted to sing
in English instead of French and
were taken off the programme.
But when both English and French speaking Quebecers complained1, the bands
were allowed to perform.
You can hear music and see folk dances on
St Johns Day. People build bonires and light
ireworks. There are also picnics, barbecues
and sports tournaments. On that day it is a
custom to take the irst swim of the year in
the St Lawrence River. Also many swimming
pools open for the season.
Although the holiday is political, it has still
got religious elements. Some people make
bread for the priests. The bread is in the
shape2 of a star (to symbolise Jesus birth) or
in the shape of a heart (to symbolise Jesus
love). Many church bells ring to celebrate.
