Administrator’s Message Can you believe it is the end of the year already? Every year seems to go by faster and

faster! The kids are growing and we are aging!

I am happy to welcome new staff members to our school next year.

Mme Mandy Knapp will be replacing Mme Jègues. Mme. Knapp has been teaching music

with SRSD for the last five years mainly at École Lorette Immersion and École Ile-des-

Chênes School. She loves musical theatre, band, dance and students creatively express-

ing themselves through music. Previous to her employment with SRSD, Mme Knapp spent

many summers working in the Sea Cadet music program. Outside of school, you’ll usually

find Mme Knapp reading a book or playing with her sweet baby girl.

Next year we will have 3 Grade 7/8 classes. M. Richard Berard will be a welcome addi-

tion to our 7/8 team. M. Berard has been teaching in our Division for the past eleven

years; eight years at Collège St. Norbert Collegiate and the past three years at the

Middle Years level at École Ile des Chênes School. He has always been heavily involved in

school athletics and activities. He enjoys spending time with his family and in all athletic

activities. His children attended ESNI and he looks forward to contributing to the

school and community.

Unfortunately (for us!), some ESNI staff members are moving on. As previously an-

nounced in the May Newsletter, Mme Jègues is continuing on to a different division.

Mme Reuter has accepted a position at École Ile-des-Chênes School as a Kindergarten

and Reading Recovery Teacher. Mme Reuter has been at ESNI for 3 years. She provid-

ed important leadership in the implementation of current and relevant teaching practic-

es. We wish her all the best in her new role.

It is with bittersweet feelings that I also announce my departure from ESNI. I will be

heading to Seine River School Division’s board office as the new Coordinator of French

Immersion Programming K-12. I am excited to start this new position, as French lan-

guage learning has long been a passion of mine. With our growing French Immersion pop-

ulation, I will be able to enable the advancement of new opportunities in the French Im-

mersion program.

Please join me in welcoming M. François Remillard as the new Principal at our school. M.

Remillard is coming to us from right next door as the Vice-Principal at Collège St. Norb-

ert Collegiate. We have such a great community and I am confident that under his lead-

ership our school will continue to excel and grow.

I have been at ESNI for 22 years, six of which as Principal. Although times were not

always easy, I have learned so much and I will always hold a special place in my heart for

this school, its’ staff, students and community. I am honored to have worked at ESNI!

Thank you for all the work you have put into ensuring quality education for your children

and for your continuous support and dedication to École St. Norbert Immersion. I will

miss all of you!

I hope you have a most enjoyable and relaxing summer!

send an email to [email protected]

This is greatly appreciated.

Communication with Transportation

Please call the Transportation Department if your

child/children do not require the school bus.

(Answering service on 24/7; Press 0 to leave a message)

Calls for the afternoon need to be placed by 2:30 PM.

Bussing changes for daycare purposes for children under the age of 12 may require up to 3

days to process.

1-204-422-6222

Please read… Should your child/children be going home with another stu-dent/parent, a phone call must be made to the school to let us

know of that change. Students will not be allowed to leave the school premises until such time that we have received a call.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Lunch Time All students, Kindergarten to Grade 8, are to remain on the school grounds during the school day unless they have permission on occasion from parents or a teacher to leave the grounds. At lunch time, K – 4 students residing less than 0.6 KMs from

school, and Grades 5 to 8 students residing less than 1.6 KMs from school, may go home for lunch. Transported students need a note from their parents to leave the school grounds and if they do have permission to leave the school grounds, they

must be accompanied by an adult. Regularly transported students who come to school by bicycle in the Fall and Spring are

still considered transported students. They, therefore, require notes to leave at lunch time as above. We want to ensure stu-dents are safe and back to school on time.

Some students in our school have allergies. In any

classroom there are occasions where food may be

present (ie: class parties, science experiments,

TUSC, etc.) Please be mindful that allergens (tree

nuts, strawberries, eggs, gluten) may cause severe

reactions and may be life-threatening to some.

Please check at the office or with your child’s home-

room teacher if you have any doubts or questions

regarding food that is brought to school. Thank you

for your consideration in this matter.

making this decision due to the reactions of

Roots of Empathy

May 25, 2017

Noah weighs 17 pounds and is 28

inches. Noah has 2 middle names named after his grandpas. His

names are Joseph and Albert. His favorite blanket has a head

of a stuffy on it. He has a toy that helps him stand up. His fa-

vorite fruit is bananas. He likes his mom more than he likes his

daddy. He follows his sister around. He doesn’t watch TV. In-

stead, he’s active. He can walk on his hands and knees. He likes

eating macaroni and cheese. He cries when he is hungry. Noah

speaks French normally.

CREATIVE YOUNG MINDS AWARD

The Seine River School Board of Trustees established the SRSD Creative

Young Minds award in 2011. This award recognizes students who demon-

strate perseverance, creativity, and a desire to improve and learn about the

Arts. This year’s recipient for Ward 1 is Kaiden C. in Grade 8. As a result,

Kaiden will be heading off to The International Music Camp Summer School

of Fine Arts this summer. Kaiden, we are so very proud of you and we are

certain that you will make ESNI and SRSD proud! Congratulations and have

fun!

CITIZENSHIP AWARD

The Seine River School Division Board of Trustees recognizes individual students and student groups

that support citizenship within their schools and community. The recipients of this award receive a

certificate of recognition and a financial award that is shared between the charity of their choice and

their school. I am proud to announce that Michaela, Brooklyn and Kasey have been chosen as this year’s

recipients for the Middle Year’s group.

Last year, these students had a bake sale to raise funds for New Directions. New Directions is an or-

ganization that supports children, youth, adults and families who may be struggling, to make their way

within their community. Michaela, Brooklyn and Kasey organized the event and were successful in rais-

ing $159.25.

This year, Michaela, Brooklyn and Kasey wanted to coordinate another bake sale. This time, they raised

$158.00 for the Winnipeg Humane Society.

They have decided to give back their financial award to the same 2 charities. Congratulations

Michaela, Brooklyn and Kasey! I am so proud of you for having demonstrated empathy, resourcefulness

Looking for a babysitter this summer? Ms. Sara Martel has been the language monitor at St. Norbert Immersion School this past year. She is a dynam-

ic, responsible and joyful person who speaks both English and French. Ms. Sara loves our province and its’ people

so much that she has decided to stay! She will be moving on from ESNI and will be pursuing her studies. As a stu-

dent, she is looking for opportunities to supplement her income. If during the summer or the upcoming school

year, you are looking for a babysitter, please contact the office and we will put you in touch with her. We would

like to wish Ms. Sara all the best in her new endeavors and thank her for all the work and activities she did with

our students.

Career Trek by Jacob G.

Hello! My name is Jacob and I will talk to you about Career Trek, what I thought

of it and my favorite subject/class. I will start with my favorite subject/class. I

think my favorite was Engineering or Criminal Justice because of the interactivi-

ty and almost every time we did it or made something, it was enjoyable (Not like

it wasn’t in other classes!) Now, I will talk about what I

thought of Career Trek. I thought of it as a fun, loving

community that knows how to make you laugh. Thanks for

reading what I thought of it!

Career Trek by Sara B.

Hello! My name is Sara and for the last few months, I

went to Career Trek. It was every Saturday and it was re-

ally fun. I’m going to talk about it and all of the fun stuff

that happened. The first term we went to the U of M. It

was really fun. My favorite was Gemology. We made rings with rocks. Mine was

pretty. Term 2 we went to the U of W. Everything was amazing. We did Criminal

Justice, Geography, Acting and Education. Three of the four instructors were

named Katelyn! Term 3 we went to U of M again. For one of the activities, we did

rock climbing. It was fun but I hurt my hands. We learned how to make clean wa-

ter too. Term 4 was at Red River. We made a birdhouse and wrote a biography.

It was fun. My sister, my mom and I went to the first family day in term one and

we made slime. Mine didn’t turn out so good. I missed the second and third fami-

ly day but for term 4, my friends came and we painted a birdhouse and made a

collage. We also went to the Stevenson Campus and looked at planes. I liked the

tiny ones. I loved Career Trek and I hope to be a senior instructor in high school.

To All Parents and Guardians,

In regard to student bussing for the 2017/18 school year.

To provide the best service to parents we will be asking the school bus drivers to contact

parents directly for those students on their bus route. The school bus driver will contact parents

with the pick up time and location between August 28th-30th using the parent contact information

on file.

Please ensure that we have your updated contact information. If this information changes

please inform the school first and then the transportation office at 204-422-6222. It is important

to communicate any and all changes with the school as well as the transportation office. These

changes can include: address, bussing location, daycare schedule, phone #, emergency contacts, vaca-

tion or time away, and last minute changes such as sick days.

New transportation requests are required for: New Students, Changing Schools, Changing

Pick Up or Drop Off Locations. If the student is classified as “School of Choice” or “Program Not

Offered” because their school is not their regular catchment school, then a transportation request

is required each year to renew bussing.

When filling out new transportation requests please ensure that you use your legal land de-

scription and not your P.O. box #. Also please include the Rural Road # along with the 911#

(driveway marker #). Example 12345 Road 49E

If you have not received a call from your school bus driver before August 31st or require

further information please contact the transportation office.

The transportation office has a 24hr answering machine at 1-204-422-6222 or email

[email protected]. The transportation office operates 12 months of the year.

Best Regards,

Wade Weimer

Tabs for Wheelchairs

Dear Friends of Tabs for Wheelchairs,

Another year has gone by and our Tabs for Wheelchairs program has continued to grow stronger! We

now have 98 schools and 91 companies/groups participating, as well as hundreds of individuals. Thank

you so much for continuing to be such faithful collectors! I know I say this every year, but we are so

very grateful for your continued support and dedication to this program!

We are proud to say that this is our 19th year and we will be presenting our 188h specialized wheel-

chair to Delaney Kolowca on Thursday, June 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross School Gymnasium.

Delaney is a grade 11 student at St. Boniface Diocesan High School. She was born with Gorlin syn-

drome, which is a genetic condition that can affect many areas of the body and is known by many other

names, with the most common being Basal Cell Carcinoma syndrome (BCCNS). She was also born with

scoliosis, which is a spinal curvature, but it never slowed her down! She danced, played soccer, volley-

ball, and rode her bike, until a surgery, which was to improve her condition, went terribly wrong and

left her paralyzed from the mid chest down. Throughout all of this, Delaney has always remained posi-

tive with a happy spirit and a remarkable attitude that she was going to make the best of it. It is going

to be our privilege to present her with a specialized wheelchair that will make her daily life much easi-

er.

Next year is a very special year as it is our 20th Anniversary and we will be presenting two wheel-

chairs. If anyone would like to help our cause and give a monetary donation, it will be gratefully accept-

ed .

Our next year’s recipients are Marlon Calakhan, who will be a Grade 9 student at Steinbach Regional

Secondary School this fall, and the Manitoba Sport Wheelchair Association of Manitoba.

Sincerely,

Gwen Buccini
