Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Vergnügen beim Blättern und Entdecken.Unseren Skiservice können Sie neu in zwei zusätzlichen Filialen in Anspruch nehmen. Einmal an der Talstation Celerina, wo Sie eine moderne Ski- und Snowboardvermietung, ein umfangreiches Angebot an Accessoires sowie einen Auszug aus unserem neuen Bekleidungs- und Skisortiment vorfinden. Eine weitere Filiale befindet sich direkt im Skigebiet auf Marguns. Dort erhalten Sie „erste Hilfe“ für alle Skischuhprobleme.Gewachsen ist auch die Familie Conrad. Letzten Frühling wurden meine Eltern Grosseltern und ich Onkel. Am 19.4.2010 ist Vanessa Li, die Tochter von Li und Gregor Conrad, in Shanghai zur Welt gekommen.Wir freuen uns über das Neue, nehmen Anteil an Veränderungen und gehen mit der Zeit. You will be able to utilise our ski-service from now on in two additional branch shops: one at the base terminal Celerina where you will find a modern ski and snowboard rental service, an extensive choice of accessories, as well as a selection from our new range of clothes and skis. Another branch shop is located in the centre of the skiing area of Marguns. This is where you can receive ‘first aid’ for all skiing boot problems.There has been an addition to the Conrad family. Last spring my parents became grandparents and I became an uncle. Vanessa Li, the daughter of Li and Gregor Conrad, was born on 19th April 2010 in Shanghai. We enjoy everything new, take an interest in change, and keep up with the times. We only hope that our aims and desires will help you to experience a captivating stay in the Engadine. Einmal Königin sein – das ist nicht absurdes Wunschdenken eines verwöhnten Mädchens, sondern realistisches Ziel von Valeria Holinger: Die 19-Jährige will sich beim legendären White Turf auf dem St. Moritzersee in der einzigartigen Disziplin Skikjöring zur „Königin des Engadins“ krönen lassen. Als erste Frau in der 103-jährigen Geschichte dieses Pferderennens. Dass sie dabei auf Widerstand seitens der Engadiner Platzhirsche stösst, ist so klar wie ihre stahlblauen Augen. Umso mehr Respekt hat sie sich mit dem dritten Platz in ihrem ersten Rennen eingefahren. Ihre Ausstrahlung ist raumfüllend, Augen und Lächeln verzaubern sofort. Eine Prinzessin? Durchaus denkbar … dass diesem Mädchen allerdings der Schalk im Nacken sitzt, zeigt sich bei genauerem Hinsehen. Verschmitzt und keck trifft es da schon deutlich besser und entspricht dem Naturell der begeisterten Pferdesportlerin weitaus mehr. Stallgeruch und der Umgang mit der Pferdebürste gehören für Valeria Holinger im Sommer ebenso zum Lieblingszeitvertreib wie der rasante Carvingschwung auf frischverschneiten Hängen in den Wintermonaten.

Der zierlichen Hotelfachschülerin aus St. Moritz ist 2009 gelungen, was bis dahin zum letzten Mal vor 27 Jahren von einer Frau versucht wurde – beim Skikjöring ins Ziel zu kommen. Als einzige Frau unter elf Männern. Platz drei. Das hat eingeschlagen wie ein Vorschlaghammer.

Wie kommt man als zierliches Mädchen eigentlich dazu, sich in die Männerdomäne Skikjöring „einzumischen“?Mein Vater hat viele Male teilgenommen und ich war als Kind immer dabei, habe zugeschaut. Mit zwei stand ich zum ersten Mal auf Skiern, mit sieben hab ich angefangen zu reiten. Mit 15, 16 Jahren wollte ich schon dabei sein. „Du darfst noch nicht, erst mit 18“, bekam ich immer als Antwort zu hören. Vorletztes Jahr war ich endlich alt genug.

Und für dich wurde extra ein altbekannter Skikjöring-Willkommensgruss abgewandelt.„Hast du auch wirklich nichts gegessen?“ Diesen Spruch hört jeder vor dem ersten Rennen. Bei mir wurde noch „Hast du dich geschminkt?“ davorgesetzt. Das hat ganz einfach damit zu tun, dass man für eine Operation nach einer Verletzung nüchtern sein sollte.

Womit wir wieder beim typisch männlichen Geplänkel wären … Wie wird in einem Dorf wie St. Moritz

aufgenommen, dass plötzlich auch Frauen diesen Sport ausüben?Ganz zu Beginn waren es ausschliesslich Einheimische, die diesem Sport gefrönt haben. Die sind von St. Moritz Dorf nach Champfèr die Strasse entlang. Ein Jahr später wurde das Rennen bereits auf dem See ausgetragen. Dann kamen die Unterländer aus Zürich und Bern dazu. Da hiess es schon: „Was machen die hier?“, kurze Zeit später sorgten Engländer und Deutsche für Aufsehen. Dass jetzt eine Frau kommt, ist wieder etwas komplett Anderes.

Wirst du von den Leuten auf das Eindringen in eine Männerbastion angesprochen?Bei uns gibt es zwei verschiedene Arten von Einheimischen. Jene, die das Gefühl haben, sie gehören zu den Schickimickis, die im Winter hier sind. Mit denen haben wir eigentlich wenig zu tun. Wir gehören eher zu den normalen Menschen hier. Ich werde schon von Freunden, meiner Familie oder auch Bekannten angesprochen, die finden das toll. Manche sagen, ich hätte einen Knall, das ist doch gefährlich, aber finden es trotzdem gut; auch wenn sie es selbst nie machen würden. Direkt werde ich kaum angesprochen, das passiert alles hinterrücks. In meinem bisher letzten Rennen bin ich nicht ins Ziel gekommen und als ich anschliessend in Privatkleidung durch die Zelte lief, habe ich viel gehört wie: „Die Frau hat es nicht geschafft“ oder „Wenn man sieht, dass sie es nicht kann, soll man sie rausnehmen“. Aber wie gesagt, auf so etwas darf ich nicht hören. Es war mein drittes Rennen. Es gibt Männer, die fahren schlimmer als ich im dritten Rennen. Vielmehr sage ich mir, ich fahre wenigstens und ihr habt nur ein grosses Maul.

Was fasziniert dich an diesem Sport?Pferde, Skifahren und Geschwindigkeit. Mit den Skiern spüre ich den Boden, mit den Zügeln die Kraft des eigenen Pferdes und ganz nah die sich heftig bewegenden Nüstern der Konkurrenten. In einem Pulk von schnellen Pferden vor dieser Kulisse ein Rennen zu fahren, das ist einmalig. Für mich Adrenalin pur!

Gibt es eine Grundvoraussetzung für Skikjöring? Alle, die Skikjöring fahren, müssen sehr gut Ski fahren können. Das ist die einzige Voraussetzung. Um als Fahrer zugelassen zu werden, müssen wir eine Prüfung ablegen. Skifahrerisches Können, Regelkenntnis und der Umgang mit dem Pferd werden dabei getestet. Es gibt zwei, drei ehemalige Jockeys oder Leute, die Pferde zuhause haben. Aber es gibt auch welche, die haben wenig bis keine Ahnung von Pferden, und das merkt man. Man sieht das im Handling, wie sie mit dem Pferd umgehen. Ich finde es wichtig, dass mein

Pferd mich kennt. Baileys Best – jenes Pferd, mit dem ich bisher gelaufen bin – hört sehr gut auf meine Stimme. Beim Training verwende ich immer die gleichen Wörter in derselben Stimmlage; ich versuche auch im Sommer Zeit mit ihm zu verbringen und bin mehrere Wochen im Gestüt in Deutschland. Er weiss einfach, wer ich bin.

Blaue Flecken, Prellungen und Sehnenverletzungen gehören quasi zum Geschäft. Gab es ein Highlight, wo du sagen würdest, das war’s wert?In meinem ersten Rennen hatte ich einen schlechten Start. Das Pferd ist mir rechts ausgebrochen. Hinter mir war noch jemand, dem war das Gleiche passiert. Zuerst dachte ich, das Rennen ist vorbei. Aber ich konnte mich auf mein Pferd verlassen und habe mit dem Fahrer hinter mir zusammengearbeitet. Ich wusste nämlich, mein Pferd läuft nicht alleine, es läuft nur im Pulk. Also habe ich ihm gesagt, wir müssen zusammenhalten, zusammen gehen, sonst sind wir beide weg. Wir sind losgefahren, haben aufgeholt und ich hatte sehr viel Zeit während des Rennens und konnte das Fahren richtig geniessen. Ich habe gar nicht gemerkt, dass ich plötzlich Dritte war. Ich war absolut überrascht. Ich konnte das Skikjöringfahren richtiggehend geniessen.

Wie lange dauert ein Rennen?Für uns dauern diese 2’000 Meter eine ganz kurze Minute, für die Zuschauer sind es hingegen etwa zweieinhalb Minuten.

Skikjöring | Definition

Aus Norwegen – der Wiege des Skifahrens – stammt diese Wintersportart und leitet sich von snørekjøring (Schnurfahren) ab. Auf Skiern und einer Skilaufbahn lässt sich eine Person von einem reiterlosen Vollblutpferd ziehen. Erlaubt sind alle Gangarten und bei Höchstgeschwindigkeiten von 55 km/h besteht die Schwierigkeit dieser Sportart besonders darin, das Gleichgewicht zu halten. Denn kleinste Unebenheiten können bereits ein vorzeitiges Aus bedeuten. Um sich gegen die von den Pferdehufen aufgewirbelten Schnee- und Eisbrocken zu schützen, werden die Fahrer/-innen mit speziellen Ausrüstungen ausgestattet.Bereits seit mehr als 100 Jahren werden Pferderennen nach dem Skikjöring-Prinzip ausschliesslich in St. Moritz, im Rahmen des bekannten „White Turf“, ausgetragen.

This snow sport originally came from Norway, the cradle of skiing, and is derived from ‘snørekjøring’ (cord skiing). A person on skis is pulled by a riderless thoroughbred across a snow-covered track. All pacing styles are allowed and with a maximum speed of 55 km/h the driver’s main difficulty is keeping balance. The slightest unevenness increases the risk of a premature elimination. The drivers (ladies and men) are provided with special equipment to protect them against the snow and ice lumps kicked up by the horses’ hooves. For more than a hundred years horse races according to the Skikjöring principles have been held exclusively in St. Moritz as part of the famous ‘White Turf‘.

White Turf – hier treffen PS-Sport in seiner ureigensten Form und feinste Gesellschaft aufeinander. Seit 1907 zählen die Pferderennen am St. Moritzersee für die Einheimischen zum Fixpunkt im Winter. Die internationale Society nützt schon beinahe ebenso lange das weisse Parkett, um ihre pelzigen Lieblinge auszuführen. Diese faszinierende Mixtur aus Pferdesport und Gesellschaftsereignis hautnah mitzuerleben ist spannend und aufregend zugleich. Eine knappe Million Schweizer Franken an Wetteinsätzen, 30’000 Gäste und knappe 4’000 Tonnen Gewicht auf der 80 cm dicken Eisschicht – als eine von 150 offiziellen Veranstaltungen im Winterkalender von St. Moritz sticht der White Turf mit Zahlenspielen dieser Art eindeutig hervor. Auf einer Gesamtfläche von 130’000 m2 finden neben der Pferderennbahn Tribünen mit 2’000 Sitzplätzen und eine Zeltstadt mit zahlreichen Verkaufs- und Verköstigungsständen in allen Preisklassen, Live-Musik-Acts und Wettbuden Platz. Der Champagner fliesst an allen drei

Rennsonntagen in Strömen und der Duft von typisch schweizerischer Bratwurst hängt in der Luft. Man gibt sich weltmännisch und zeigt, was man hat oder hat machen lassen. Zur Schau getragen werden Pelze in unterschiedlichsten Farbschattierungen und Designs, mal mit passendem Kopfschmuck oder Schuhwerk, mal trottet auch der obligate Vierbeiner im edlen Nerzumhang Herrchen und Frauchen hinterher. Über den Ausgang des eben gesehenen Pferderennens wird dann am ordinären Stehtisch und bei Gerstensuppe und Grillwürstchen debattiert. Bodenständig mit einem Tick Extravaganz.Alle 30 Minuten kommt Bewegung in die Menge. Noch schnell ein Abstecher ins Wettbüro – immerhin rund 600’000 Euro wurden 2010 über die französische PMU an drei Tagen eingesetzt –, dann ist es Zeit für einen sonnigen Platz auf der Tribüne mit perfektem Blick über die gesamte Rennstrecke. Trab, Galopp oder das einmalige Skikjöring – Pferderennen, deswegen kommt zumindest die Hälfte der White-Turf-Besucher jedes Jahr im Februar ins Engadin. Die edlen Vollblüter kommen

von überall her, ihr Wert lässt sich irgendwo zwischen Mittelklasseauto und Villa mit Meerblick ansiedeln und sie schaffen es, die volle Aufmerksamkeit der feinen Gesellschaft auf sich zu ziehen.Dass man sich auf Eis bewegt, ist nicht bewusst wahrnehmbar. Alles ist in eine dicke Schneeschicht eingehüllt, minus 20 Grad und strahlender Sonnenschein verzaubern die Bergwelt rund um St. Moritz in eine schon fast kitschig anmutende Romantik. Gänzlich wie im Märchen fühlt man sich bei der Kutschenfahrt über den See. Der Kutscher ist ein Schweizer Urgestein, plaudert beherzt aus dem Nähkästchen, hütet die ihm anvertrauten Geheimnisse seiner Gäste aber wie einen Schatz. PS: Sie möchten bei Ihrem kommenden White-Turf-Besuch auffallen? Dann tragen Sie keinen Pelz! HEIDI, HEIDI, DEINE WELT SIND DIE BERGE...! Die Geschichte Heidi wird mit fünf Jahren von ihrer Tante Dete zum Grossvater auf die Alp gebracht. Sie hatte sich seit dem Tod von Heidis Mutter um das Kind gekümmert und möchte dem Angebot einer vornehmen Frankfurter Familie folgen. Der Grossvater nimmt sich liebevoll des Kindes an. Fortan zieht Heidi täglich mit dem Geissenpeter auf die Weiden und begeistert sich an der Schönheit der Natur – Heidi ist zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben glücklich. Nach zwei Jahren erscheint ein Pfarrer auf der Alp und mahnt den Grossvater das Kind in die Schule zu schicken. Noch am selben Tag erscheint auch Tante Dete und will Heidi mit nach Frankfurt nehmen. Sie soll dort der gelähmten Klara Freude bereiten, könne aber jederzeit auf die Alp zurück. Der Grossvater willigt ein.

Klara erweist sich bald als liebevolle Freundin. Die Gouvernante Fräulein Rottenmeier hingegen als hysterische, kinder- und tierfeindliche Tyrannin und Diener Sebastian als ihr heimlicher Helfer und schadenfreudiger Kollege. Doch glücklicherweise gibt es die Grossmama, die Heidi mit viel Liebe und Geduld das Lesen und Beten lehrt und Herrn Sesemann, der schnell bemerkt, dass Heidis Gegenwart für seine Tochter ein Segen ist, sowie den Herrn Doktor, der kurz entschlossen aufgrund Heidis schrecklichen Heimwehs ihre Heimreise anordnet.

Des einen Leid – des andern Freud: Klara vermisst ihre kleine Freundin sehr,

Heidi hingegen ist glücklich wieder beim Grossvater auf der Alp zu sein. Vor Wintereinbruch zieht der Grossvater mit Heidi und den Geissen ins Dorf, wo Heidi die Schule besucht. Sie bringt Peter das Lesen bei und auch er sitzt fortan täglich in der Schulklasse. Im Frühling ziehen sie mit den Geissen wieder auf die Alp.

Gelegentlich kommen Briefe von Klara. Der Herr Doktor habe ihr eine Kur in Bad Ragaz verordnet und sie hofft, Heidi im Sommer jeden Tag auf der Alp besuchen zu können. Statt der Familie Sesemann kommt im Spätherbst jedoch nur der Herr Doktor. Seine einzige Tochter war vor wenigen Monaten gestorben und seitdem könne er nicht mehr fröhlich sein. Doch Heidi schafft es, den alten Freund aufzumuntern. Sie zitiert ihm das Lied: „Befiehl du deine Wege und was dein Herz kränkt, der aller treusten Pflege, des, der den Himmel lenkt, der Wolken, Luft und Winden, gibt Wege, Lauf und Bahn, der wird auch Wege finden, da dein Fuss gehen kann.“ Gestärkt verlässt er die Alp. Im nächsten Sommer kommen die Sesemanns. Heidi ist erfreut, der Geissenpeter allerdings weniger. Er befürchtet, dass Heidi nun keine Zeit mehr für ihn hat. Voller Wut stösst er Klaras Rollstuhl den Berg hinunter. Dank der Pflege des Grossvaters, der Alpenluft und der Geissenmilch wird Klara von Tag zu Tag kräftiger und lernt sogar zu gehen. Als Herr Sesemann ankommt, traut er seinen Augen nicht. Er fragt den Alpöhi, wie er ihm die gute Pflege seiner Tochter Klara vergelten könne, meint dieser, er hätte nur den einen Wunsch,

dass Heidi nie in ihrem Leben bei fremden Leuten ihr Brot verdienen müsse.

Am anderen Morgen fliessen Tränen, als Klara abreist. Doch Heidi erhält das Versprechen, dass sie nun jeden Sommer zu ihr in die Ferien kommt. Kurz danach kommt der Herr Doktor ins Dorf, kauft das alte Gebäude des Alpöhi, welches ihm als Winterquartier dient und ordnet eine Restaurierung und einen Umbau an. Er möchte fortan im gleichen Haus wohnen wie Heidi. Er wünscht sich, dass Heidi ihn an seinen alten Tagen pflegt, dafür solle sie seine alleinige Erbin sein. Diese Worte erfreuen den Grossvater, denn nun weiss er Heidi für alle Zeiten gut versorgt.

Heidi-Hütte Ursprünglich aus dem Jahr 1792 und im Bergell gebaut, wurde das Blockhaus 1977 auf der Alp Albana ob Champfèr aufgestellt und für die Dreharbeiten des Heidi-Films als Alpöhi-Hütte eingesetzt. Seit 1977 steht das Original auf Salastrains, oberhalb von St. Moritz Dorf und steht seinen kleinen und grossen Besuchern das ganze Jahr über offen.

Die Autorin Johanna Spyri (* Hirzel ZH 12.6.1827, † Zürich 7.7.1901) Heidi-Geschichte – in 50 Sprachen übersetzt und in ebenso vielen Millionen Exemplaren gedruckt, visuell umgesetzt in Spiel-, Trick- und Dokumentarfilm – ist ein „Longseller“. Das bekannteste Werk der Schweizer Literatur macht Heidi bis heute zur berühmtesten Schweizerin.

Eine der schönsten Routen, um die Alpen mit der Bahn oder per Auto zu überqueren, führt über den Berninapass (2.328 m). Er verbindet das Engadin im Norden mit dem Puschlav und im Süden mit dem italienischen Veltlin. Die Passhöhe mit ihren beiden Seen Lej Nair und Lago Bianco markiert ebenso die Hauptwasserscheide zwischen dem Schwarzen Meer und der Adria wie den Übergang vom rätoromanischen zum italienischen Sprach- und Kulturraum.

Die Geschichte des Alpenpasses reicht bis in die Bronzezeit zurück. Zahlreiche Funde im Engadin und im Veltlin aus dieser Zeit lassen darauf schliessen, dass der Berninapass bereits in vorhistorischer Zeit überquert wurde. Kaiserlichen Besuch erhielt er vor etwa 200 Jahren von Napoleon Bonaparte, der ebenfalls diese Nord-Süd-Verbindung nutzte. Die beliebte Strecke ist nach wie vor ein Anziehungspunkt für viele Reisende. Sie ist Anreiz für Auto- und Motorradfahrer, die hier ihren Gefährten und vor allem sich selbst auf kurvenreicher und steiler Strecke ein Fahrerlebnis der Extraklasse gönnen möchten, aber auch

für die weniger rasanten Besucher, die sich für eine Bahnfahrt entlang der urigen und höchstgelegenen Alpentransversale – der Berninalinie – entscheiden.

Der langsamste Schnellzug der WeltMit 30 km/h schlängelt sich die elektrisch betriebene meterspurige Berninabahn den Berg hinauf, vorbei an den Gletschern und wieder hinunter zu den Palmen. Mit einer Steigung von 7 % gehört sie zu den steilsten Adhäsionsbahnen der Welt. Auf ihrer Strecke zwischen St. Moritz und Tirano wird 61 km lang spektakuläre Baukunst geboten: 13 Tunnel und Galerien sowie 52 Brücken – all dies vor einer Naturkulisse, die bunter und abwechslungsreicher nicht sein könnte.

Mehr als ein AutorennenIn den Jahren 1929 und 1930 lieferten sich legendäre Autorennfahrer wie Hans Stuck und Louis Chiron am Berninapass auf einer 16,5 km langen Strecke ein Autorennen der Extraklasse. Seitdem reist er durch die Welt, macht in Videofilmen mit und schaffte es letzte Saison sogar ins Schweizer Olympiateam. Obwohl er sich zur Qualifikationsteilnahme verpflichtet hat, trainiert „Hitsch“ jedoch nicht nur auf der Pipe: Sein Board begleitet ihn auch auf Slopestyle- und Big-Air-Events und ab und an hat er sogar Zeit für ein bisschen Pulverschnee.

Christian has been part of the snowboarding world for a while now. He’s just 20 but he won his first big junior title seven years ago. Since then he has traveled the world, made videos, and he even qualified for the Olympic team for Switzerland last season. Although committed to the Olympic qualifying circus, ‘Hitsch’ didn’t stick strictly with the training pipe. He kept doing slope style and big air events, and even found time for some powder.

To be a queen just once – that is not just a spoilt girl’s absurd wishful thinking but the realistic aim of 19-year-old Valeria Holinger: she would like to become the first lady in the 103-year history of the unique Skikjöring discipline to be crowned ‘Queen of the Engadine’ at the legendary White Turf on the frozen lake of St. Moritz. The fact that she will encounter resistance from the Engadine alpha males is as clear as her steel-blue eyes. Coming third in her first race has engendered all the more respect for her. Her charisma is space-filling, her eyes and smile charm immediately. A princess? Quite likely… but at second glance one realises that the girl is a real teaser. The twinkle in her eyes and cheeky smile characterise her far better and underline the temper of this enthusiastic equestrian. Working with horses surrounded by farmyard smells and handling a horse brush are as much Valeria Holinger’s favourite pastimes in summer as dynamically carving her way down snowy slopes during the winter months.

In 2009, the dainty student of the hotel management school from St. Moritz succeeded in what was attempted for the last time some 27 years ago, i.e. to pass the finishing line of a Skikjöring race as the only lady among eleven men. She came third. The effect was like a sledge hammer.

How is it possible for a pretty girl to dare to ‘intervene’ in the male domain of Skikjöring?My father participated many times and when I was small I always came along to watch him. At the age of two I was on skis for the first time and I started horse-riding at the age of seven. I wanted to participate at 15 and 16, but every time the answer was, ‘You are not allowed yet, you must be 18’. The year before last I was finally old enough.

And specially for you they changed the long-known Skikjöring pre-race questions?‘Are you sure you didn’t eat anything?’ Everybody hears this before the first race. For me they added ‘You didn’t put on any make-up?’. In fact, it is simply that one has to have an empty stomach in case of injury requiring an operation.

Which takes us back to typically masculine banter... how is it possible in a village like St. Moritz for a woman to take part in this sport all of a sudden?At the very beginning only locals used to

participate in this sport that they practised along the road leading from St. Moritz Village to Champfèr. A year later the races began to be held on the frozen lake. Soon competitors from the lowlands, from Zurich and Berne, joined them, causing comments like ‘What do they want up here?’ A little later, Englishmen and Germans caused quite a stir. But that a woman enters the scene is something totally new.

Do people reproach you for penetrating a male bastion? In fact there are two kinds of locals. Those who feel they belong to the in-crowd and come mainly in winter. We don’t really have anything to do with them. And those who are more normal like us. Of course, friends, my family, or acquaintances have talked to me about it, but only to encourage me. There are some who say that I am crazy and that it is too dangerous, but they still approve even though they would never dare participate. Hardly anybody reproaches me directly; only behind my back. In my last race I didn’t pass the finishing line and when I went normally dressed through the tents afterwards, I heard comments like ‘The lady didn’t make it’ or ‘She shouldn’t participate if she can’t succeed’. But as I said, I just don’t listen to that sort of thing. It was my third race and there were men worse than I. Finally I just say to myself that at least I participate and these people only talk big.

What fascinates you most in this sport?Horses, skiing and speed. I feel the ground with the skis, the force of my horse with the reins, and close by the loudly snorting nostrils of the other competitors’ horses. To participate in a race with a bunch of fast horses and surrounded by the magnificent setting is just unique. It’s a true rush of adrenaline for me!

Are there basic requirements for Skikjöring? Everybody participating in Skikjöring must be an excellent skier. That is the main requirement. In order to be accepted as a driver, one has to pass an exam testing skiing skills, knowledge of the rules, and handling horses. There are jockeys or participants who have their own horses but there are also those who have no idea about horses, and you can tell by looking at them and the way they handle the horses. I think it is very important that my horse knows me. Baileys Best – the horse I have used up to now – knows my voice very well. During the training I always use the same words with the same pitch. I try to spend a lot of time with him in summer and I stay for

several weeks at the stud farm in Germany. He simply knows who I am.

Bruises, contusions, and pulled tendons are practically part of the business. Is there a highlight that makes you say ‘it was worth it’?I had a bad start in my first race. The horse bolted to the right side and behind me was someone with the same experience. First of all I thought the race was over but luckily I could rely on my horse and continue together with the driver behind me. I knew my horse would not run on its own but only together with other horses. So I told the other competitor to stick and race together as otherwise we would both be out. We took off, caught up, and I had enough time to thoroughly enjoy the race. I didn’t even realize that I had come third straight away and was very surprised.

How long does a race last?For us the distance of 2,000m lasts less than a minute, but for the spectators from the preparations to the finishing line it lasts two-and-a-half minutes.

You could become the first ‘Queen of the Engadine’. Is that what you are aiming at?I will certainly be on the starting line and would like to show that I can win. That’s my objective for the next three or four years.

Did your father ever win?His best result was third place.

So you have already caught up with him?Exactly… in my first race!

Per una volta nella vita essere una regina – non è l’assurdo desiderio di una ragazzina viziata, ma l’obiettivo reale di Valeria Holinger: la diciannovenne ha infatti tutta l’intenzione di farsi incoronare “regina dell’Engadina” per la disciplina Skikjöring nell’ambito del leggendario White Turf sul lago di St. Moritz. E sarebbe la prima regina in 103 anni di storia di questa corsa ippica. Che incontri una certa resistenza da parte dei suoi avversari maschi è assolutamente chiaro, proprio come i suoi occhi blu acciaio: il terzo posto ottenuto nella sua prima gara le ha infatti assicurato già un certo rispetto.

Il suo fascino è tangibile, occhi e sorriso conquistano immediatamente. Una principessa? Possibile… ma guardando con attenzione si scorge anche il suo lato burlone. Aggettivi come birichina e sbarazzina sono più adeguati e rispecchiano meglio il carattere di quest’appassionata dello sport ippico. Il profumo della scuderia e la brusca sono per Valeria Holinger in estate il passatempo prediletto, così come in inverno il carving a velocità mozzafiato sui pendii innevati di fresco.

La snella studentessa di St. Moritz, che frequenta un istituto professionale alberghiero, è riuscita nel 2009 a raggiungere il traguardo durante una gara di Skikjöring – l’ultimo tentativo di una donna risaliva a 27 anni prima – conquistando per di più la terza posizione: l’unica donna tra undici uomini. Un vero colpo.

Come mai una ragazza delicata come te decide di “immischiarsi” nel dominio prettamente maschile delle gare di Skikjöring?Mio padre ha partecipato spesso e fin da bambina ho sempre seguito con entusiasmo le gare: a due anni ho provato per la prima volta a sciare, a sette ho iniziato a cavalcare. A 15, 16 anni volevo assolutamente partecipare alle gare, ma la risposta era sempre la stessa: “Non ancora, devi prima compiere i 18 anni”. Due anni fa ho finalmente raggiunto l’età richiesta.

E per te il noto motto di benvenuto dello Skikjöring (“Non hai davvero mangiato nulla?”) è stato trasformato ad hoc.Questa battuta la si sente sempre prima di ogni prima gara: a me viene anche detto: “Ti sei truccata?”. Il motto originario vuole sottintendere che nel caso sia necessaria

un’operazione dopo una ferita si dovrebbe essere digiuni.

Questo ci riporta alla tipica schermaglia maschile… Come viene visto in un paese come St. Moritz il fatto che anche le donne pratichino questo sport?Inizialmente erano esclusivamente gli abitanti locali a dedicarsi a questo sport, lungo la strada che da St. Moritz-Dorf porta a Champfèr; un anno dopo la gara fu trasferita sul lago. Poi si sono aggiunti gli sportivi da Zurigo e Berna, e con loro i primi commenti: “Che ci fanno qui?”, ma poco dopo sono stati inglesi e tedeschi a suscitare scalpore. Il fatto che ora partecipi una donna è, ancora una volta, qualcosa di nuovo.

La gente ti chiede come ci si sente ad essersi introdotta in un bastione maschile?Da noi ci sono due generi di persone. Quelli che si sentono simili agli elegantoni che ci sono in inverno, e con loro non abbiamo un granché a che fare, in quanto facciamo parte delle persone normali; poi naturalmente gli amici, la famiglia o i conoscenti, che discutono questo fatto con me e lo trovano fantastico. Alcuni dicono che non ci sono tutta con la testa, visti i pericoli, ma comunque sono entusiasti, anche se personalmente non ci proverebbero mai. Però non mi fanno domande dirette, tutto avviene in sordina. Nella mia ultima gara, la terza, non ho raggiunto il traguardo e in seguito, camminando tra le tende in abiti normali, ho sentito commenti come “La donna non c’è l’ha fatta” oppure “Visto che non è in grado di partecipare la si dovrebbe escludere”. Ma come ho già detto, non devo dar retta a questi commenti: è stata la mia terza gara, e ci sono uomini che ottengono risultati peggiori di quello che ho raggiunto io. E vorrei far notare: io gareggio, voi siete solo delle malelingue.

Cosa ti affascina in questo sport?Cavalli, sci e velocità. Con gli sci sento il terreno, con le redini la forza del mio cavallo e, vicinissime, le narici vibranti dei cavalli avversari. Partecipare a una corsa in un tale scenario e nel mezzo di un branco di cavalli velocissimi è un’esperienza unica. Per me adrenalina pura!

Ci sono requisiti base per esercitare lo Skikjöring?Bisogna assolutamente saper sciare molto bene: questo è l’unico requisito. Inoltre per poter partecipare alla gara dobbiamo superare un esame, durante il quale si esaminano le capacità sciistiche, la conoscenza delle regole e il rapporto

con il cavallo. Ci sono due o tre ex jockey o persone che possiedono un cavallo, mentre altri conoscono poco o addirittura nulla i cavalli, e lo si nota! Si vede in ogni movimento e nel modo in cui li trattano. Per me è importante che il cavallo mi conosca: Baileys Best – il cavallo con cui finora ho partecipato – risponde perfettamente agli ordini della mia voce. Durante l’allenamento ripeto sempre le stesse parole e con lo stesso tono, cerco di passare con lui più tempo possibile anche in estate e trascorro diverse settimane nella scuderia in Germania. Il cavallo sa perfettamente chi sono.

Ematomi, contusioni e lesioni ai tendini fanno per così dire parte del gioco. Quale è stato il clou che ti ha fatto dire “Ne valeva la pena”?Durante la prima gara ho avuto una partenza difficile, il cavallo ha sbandato a destra; dietro di me c’era qualcun’altro a cui è successo lo stesso inconveniente. In un primo momento ho pensato che la gara fosse già da dimenticare, ma ho potuto fare affidamento sul mio cavallo e ho cooperato con il partecipante dietro di me: sapevo infatti che il mio cavallo non corre da solo, ha sempre bisogno del branco. Pertanto ho detto all’altro concorrente: dobbiamo fare sinergia e correre assieme, sennò usciamo tutti e due. Siamo ripartiti, abbiamo raggiunto gli altri e durante la corsa ho avuto molto tempo e mi sono davvero goduta la guida; non mi sono nemmeno accorta di essere improvvisamente terza, ero assolutamente sorpresa.

Quanto dura una gara?Per noi i 2.000 metri durano soltanto un breve attimo, per gli spettatori circa due minuti e mezzo.

Potresti diventare la prima “regina dell’Engadina”. È un obiettivo che intendi raggiungere?Sicuramente prenderò il via e cercherò di dimostrare di poter vincere; questo è il mio obiettivo per i prossimi tre, quattro anni.

Tuo padre ha già vinto una gara?Il suo miglior risultato è stato un terzo posto.

Quindi lo hai già raggiunto.Esatto… e nella prima corsa!

White Turf – this is where the most authentic form of HP-sport meets high society. Every winter since 1907, the horse races on the frozen lake of St. Moritz have been a focal point for the locals, and almost for the same length of time, members of international high society have used the white floor to take their furry favourites for a walk. Experiencing this fascinating mixture of equestrian sports and social event is captivating and exciting at the same time. The stakes are almost a million Swiss Francs, 30,000 guests attend, and the ice sheet of 80 cm has to carry a weight of almost 4,000 tons. As one of 150 official events on the winter calendar of St. Moritz, the statistics of White Turf are the most impressive. On a total surface of 130,000m², grandstands with some 2,000 seats are set up next to the racetrack, as well as a tent city with a great number of sales and catering stands in all price ranges, with live musical shows and betting stalls.

Champagne flows like water on all three racing Sundays, and the smell of typically Swiss-grilled sausages fills the air. Everybody acts in a sophisticated way and it is essential to see and be seen. Fur coats in all colours and designs are flaunted, sometimes with matching headgear or footwear, and here and there accompanied by the obligatory four-legged friend clad in a precious mink cape. Around an ordinary bar table, over barley broth and grilled sausages, people discuss the final outcome of the last race. Down-to-earth with a touch of extravagance.Every 30 minutes, the crowd is on the move. Quickly a detour to the betting stalls – after all roughly 600,000 Euro were bet on the three racing days in 2010 via the French PMU – before it’s time to take a seat on the sunny grandstand which gives a perfect view perfect across the entire race track. At least half of the White Turf visitors come to the Engadine every February for the trotting and gallop races or for the exceptional Skikjöring. The noble thoroughbreds arrive from different parts of the world. Their value

can be placed somewhere between a mid-range car and a villa overlooking the sea, and they manage to capture the attention of the high society. It is not really obvious that the event is taking place on ice. The entire venue is covered by a thick layer of snow: minus 20 degrees and brilliant sunshine turn the Alpine setting around St. Moritz into one of almost sugary romanticism. A coach tour across the lake gives the feeling of being part of a fairy tale. The coachman is an earthy Swiss original who reveals secrets but not those he has been entrusted with, like treasures, by his guests. (P.S.) Would you like to attract attention during your next White Turf visit? Then please don’t wear fur! As a slightly altered saying goes: ‘Other designers also make beautiful clothes’. Their names are Bogner, Kjus and Moncler, among others, and they will cause quite a sensation this winter with loud red and green colours, and can even guarantee to attract attention in tasteful chocolate brown or noble black.

The storyAt the age of five Heidi is brought by her aunt Dete to her grandfather in the Alps. She had cared for Heidi ever since her mother’s death and now wants to accept an offer of work with a distinguished family in Frankfurt. The grandfather takes Heidi under his wing with loving care. From now on Heidi wanders every day with Peter the goat-herd to the pastures and is enchanted by the beauty of nature. She feels happy for the first time in her life. After two years, the parish priest turns up and urges the grandfather to send the child to school. The same day, Heidi’s aunt Dete also turns up and announces that she wishes to take Heidi to Frankfurt, where she will be a companion to the family’s paralyzed girl Clara, but assures Heidi that she can come back to the mountains at any time. The grandfather consents.

Clara becomes a dear friend but the governess, Miss Rottenmeier is a hysterical tyrant who hates children and animals. The servant Sebastian is her secret helper and gloating colleague. Luckily there is the grandmother who teaches Heidi patiently to read and to pray, and Mr. Sesemann who quickly realizes that Heidi’s presence is bliss for his daughter, as well as the doctor who orders Heidi’s impromptu return journey because of her tremendous homesickness.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure: Clara misses her friend enormously while Heidi is more than happy

to be back with her grandfather. Before the winter begins the grandfather moves with Heidi and the goats to the village, where she will go to school. She teaches Peter to read and he, too, goes to school every day. In spring they move up to the high mountain pasture again with the goats.

Some letters come from Clara and this time she writes that the doctor has prescribed her a cure at Bad Ragaz and she hopes to visit Heidi every day in summer on the high mountain pasture. But instead of the Sesemann family it is only the doctor who arrives at the end of summer. He tells them that his only daughter died a few months earlier and he has been unable to find happiness ever since. Heidi, though, manages to cheer her old friend up and he leaves feeling much better.

The following summer the Sesemann family arrives. Heidi is delighted but Peter is less happy because he is afraid that Heidi will have no time for him anymore. Enraged, he pushes Clara’s wheelchair down the mountain. Thanks to the grandfather’s care, the mountain air and the goats’ milk, Clara becomes healthier every day and even learns to walk. When Mr. Sesemann comes back he can hardly believe his eyes. He asks the grandfather how he can repay him for the good care of his daughter Clara, and the grandfather replies that he only has one wish: that Heidi would never have to earn her living by serving strangers. The next morning tears flow when Clara leaves. Heidi keeps her promise and visits

her friend every summer during the holidays. A little while later the doctor comes back to the village and buys the grandfather’s old house and winter quarters. He orders it be completely renovated. In the future he wants to live in the same house as Heidi and hopes that she will care for him when he is older. In return she will become his sole heir. These words gladden the grandfather’s heart who now knows that Heidi’s future is now assured.

Heidi’s alpine hutOriginally built in 1792 at Bergell, the hut was replaced in 1977 on the Alp Albana above Champfèr and used as the grandfather’s hut for the shooting of the Heidi film. Since 1977, the original hut has been in Salastrains above St. Moritz Village. It is open to all visitors, children, and adults, all year round.

La storiaAll’età di cinque anni Heidi viene portata dalla zia Dete all’alpeggio, per essere accolta dal nonno, soprannominato il Vecchio dell’Alpe. La zia si era occupata della bimba dopo la morte della mamma, ma ora intende accettare l’offerta di una famiglia benestante di Francoforte. Il nonno accoglie amorevolmente la bimba. Heidi ogni giorno esce sui pascoli assieme all’amico Peter, ed è entusiasta della bellezza della natura. Heidi è felice per la prima volta in assoluto. Dopo due anni si presenta un parroco che rammenta al nonno l’obbligo scolastico per la bimba, e sempre nello stesso giorno arriva la zia Dete che vuole portare Heidi con sé a Francoforte, dove dovrebbe far compagnia a Clara, paralizzata, potendo però naturalmente tornare all’alpeggio quando vorrà. Il nonno acconsente.

Presto Clara si dimostra un’amica affettuosa. La governante, la Signorina Rottermayer, è invece una tiranna isterica che odia bimbi e animali, aiutata segretamente dal servitore Sebastian, il suo maligno collega. Fortunatamente però ci sono anche la nonna, che con amore e pazienza insegna ad Heidi a leggere e pregare, il Signor Seseman, che presto nota che la presenza di Heidi risulta una vera benedizione per sua figlia, e il Dottore che, vista la nostalgia di Heidi per l’alpeggio, ordina il suo ritorno dal nonno.

Gioie e dolori: Clara rimpiange terribilmente la piccola amica, mentre Heidi è felice di

essere nuovamente dal nonno nella malga. Prima dell’inverno il nonno si trasferisce con Heidi e le sue capre in paese, dove Heidi può frequentare la scuola. Heidi insegna a leggere a Peter, che inizia quindi a frequentare ogni giorno la scuola, e in primavera tornano tutti sull’alpeggio.

Di tanto in tanto arrivano lettere di Clara. Il Dottore le ha prescritto una cura a Bad Ragaz e la ragazza in estate spera di poter far visita ogni giorno ad Heidi sull’alpeggio. Ma al posto della famiglia Seseman nel tardo autunno si presenta solo il Dottore: la sua unica figlia è deceduta alcuni mesi prima e da quel momento la felicità l’ha abbandonato. Heidi riesce tuttavia a risollevare il morale del caro amico, che rincuorato lascia l’alpeggio.

L’estate successiva arrivano i Seseman. Heidi è contenta, Peter invece molto meno: teme infatti che Heidi non abbia più tempo da dedicargli. Pieno di rabbia spinge perciò la sedia a rotelle di Clara giù dalla montagna. Grazie alle cure del nonno, all’aria di montagna e al latte di capra, Clara diventa ogni giorno più forte e riesce addirittura a camminare: al suo arrivo il Signor Seseman non crede ai propri occhi. Chiede perciò al nonno cosa può fare per sdebitarsi delle cure dedicate a Clara, il quale risponde che il suo unico desiderio è che Heidi non debba mai cercare di guadagnarsi presso estranei il pane quotidiano.

Alla partenza di Clara la mattina dopo

scorre un fiume di lacrime, ma Clara promette ad Heidi di tornare ogni estate per le vacanze. In seguito arriva in paese il Dottore, che acquista il vecchio edificio che funge da residenza invernale per il nonno e lo fa ristrutturare. Desidera infatti vivere nella stessa casa di Heidi, e vorrebbe che la ragazzina si prendesse cura di lui in vecchiaia: in compenso la nomina sua unica erede. Il nonno si rallegra di queste parole, in quanto ora il futuro di Heidi è sicuro.

La baita di HeidiCostruita nel 1792 alla Val Bregaglia, la casetta di legno è stata installata nel 1977 sull’alpeggio Albana sopra Champfèr e utilizzata come baita del Vecchio dell’Alpe per le riprese della serie televisiva di Heidi. Dal 1977 la baita originale si trova a Salastrains, al di sopra di St. Moritz-Dorf, ed è aperta tutto l’anno per grandi e piccini.

One of the most beautiful routes for crossing the Alps by rail or by car leads across the Bernina Pass (alt. 2328m). It connects the Engadine in the north with the Italian-speaking region of Val Poschiavo and ends in the South in the Italian Valtellina area. The top of the pass, with its two lakes Lej Nair and Lago Bianco, is the main watershed between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea and also marks the transition from the Rhaeto-Romanic cultural and language area to the Italian one.

The history of the Alpine pass goes back to the Bronze Age. A great number of discoveries from those times in the Engadine and the Valtellina area suggest that the Bernina Pass was crossed in prehistoric times. It received an imperial visit some 200 years ago from Napoleon Bonaparte, who also used this north-south

connection. The popular route is still the centre of attraction for many travellers. It is extremely tempting for motorists and motorcyclists to treat their passengers and especially themselves to an exhilarating experience on this steep and winding road, but also for less racy visitors who decide to travel by rail on the highest and most ingenious Alpine crossing – the Bernina Express.

The slowest express train in the worldAt a speed of 30km/h the electric operated multi-track train winds up the mountain, past glaciers, and down again to palm trees. With a gradient of 7% it is one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. The stretch between St. Moritz and Tirano offers 61km of spectacular examples of the art of construction: 13 tunnels and galleries, as well as 52 bridges, and the whole trip is through a natural setting that could not be more colourful and varied.

More than a car raceBack in the years 1929 and 1930, legendary racing drivers such as Hans Stuck and Louis Chiron took part in an exciting car race along a stretch of 16.5km on the Bernina road. THE BERNINA PASS – AIMING HIGH

Uno dei più bei percorsi per passare le Alpi in ferrovia o in automobile è il Passo del Bernina (2.328 m). Il passo congiunge l’Engadina con la Valposchiavo a nord e a sud con la Valtellina, che si trova in Italia. La quota del passo, con i due laghi Lej Nair e Lago Bianco, rappresenta anche lo spartiacque principale tra il mar Nero e l’Adriatico, e il punto d’incontro tra la zona linguistica e culturale retoromanza e quella italiana.

La storia del passo alpino comincia dall’età del bronzo. Numerosi ritrovamenti in Engadina e nella Valtellina, risalenti appunto a tale epoca, lasciano dedurre che il Passo del Bernina era un punto di attraversamento già in epoca preistorica. Circa 200 anni fa anche l’imperatore Napoleone Bonaparte utilizzò questo collegamento tra nord e sud, e ancora oggi questo amato tragitto attira molti viaggiatori. Esso rappresenta infatti un vero incentivo non solo per automobilisti e motociclisti che vogliono concedere al proprio mezzo – ma soprattutto a se stessi – un’esperienza di guida molto particolare, su una tratta ricca di curve ed estremamente ripida; è

un’attrazione anche per i visitatori meno spericolati, che optano per un viaggio in treno con la linea del Bernina lungo la più alta trasversale alpina in alta quota, dotata di un fascino pittoresco.

Il treno rapido più lento del mondoLa linea ferroviaria elettrica a scartamento metrico del Bernina procede sui pendii a una velocità di 30 km/h, e affianca i ghiacciai per poi scendere nuovamente a costeggiare le palme. La pendenza del 7% la rende una delle ferrovie ad aderenza più ripide al mondo.
