Text In English

Tour of the castle

We went to visit the castle of Cheverny on

Sunday. It’s really magnificent, and well

preserved as well. It has a true classical style,

and it is painted in an immaculate white.

There was an exhibit on Tintin, the comic

book hero. You know that this is the castle

that Tintin’s author, Hergé used as the model

for his castle , Moulinsart. Next month’s

exhibit will be on “riding coats” throughout

the ages. At noon, we went to see the

castle’s pack of hunting dogs feed. Rather

disgusting, but hey, interesting anyway. You

should see the King’s bedroom. It is

incomparably luxurious, full of really

sumptuous paintings. Did you know that it

has always been inhabited by its owners?

That’s why you can see pieces of furniture of

all styles. It has been furnished by all of the

owners, throughout the eras. And there are

huge gardens to visit as well. What I really

enjoy is the love story behind all of that. The

castle was given as a present from a king to

his mistress. She didn’t want it, but

nevertheless. Isn’t it romantic?

Clin d’Œil Culturel – Loire Valley Castles https://frenchhour.com/blog/loire-valley-castles/ Azay-le-Rideau Castle: The Azay-le-Rideau castle, built in the Italian

Renaissance style, sits above still water, where its image can is

reflected as in a mirror.

Chambord Castle: The Chambord castle is a huge Renaissance castle

with as many chimneys as there are days in a year: 365. It is famous for

its double helix majestic white staircase. The staircase is said to have

been designed by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Villandry Castle: The Villandry castle seems to be the last Renaissance

castle to have been built on the banks of the Loire River. It is most

famous for its three gardens. There is a decorative vegetable garden, a

formal French garden and a water garden.

Amboise Castle: The construction of the Amboise castle began in the

13th century with the erection of a chapel that now holds Leonardo Da

Vinci’s tomb.

Chenonceau Castle: The Chenonceau castle is probably the most

visited of all Loire Valley castles because it holds many rare and

gorgeous pieces of furniture and paintings. King Henry II had given it as

a present to Diane de Poitiers, his mistress.

There are also many smaller scale castles that are still privately owned.

Most of them are open to the public in order to raise the revenue to

keep up with the high maintenance costs.

Many of them have bed and breakfasts, and display regular exhibits or

host plays and performances.

If you are in France, and are interested, the way to know what is going

on in your area is to go to the town’s tourist office.

Grammaire – Grammar This lesson is the sequel to 'Agreement of the Past participle - Part 1' at https://frenchhour.com/blog/agreement-of-the-past-participle/. Expert Corner - Le Coin des Curieux “Elle n’en a pas voulu.” Agreement of Past Participle with EN EN means SOME. The rule states that the past participle agrees with the object if the object is before the verb.

• J’ai mangé les pommes. -- Je les ai mangées. -- I ate the apples. -- I ate them.

However, if the object happens to be EN, there is no agreement.

• J’ai mangé des pommes. -- Je les ai mangées. -- J’EN ai mangé. -- I ate apples. -- I ate them. --I ate some.

• J’ai vu tous les musées. -- Je les ai tous vus. -- J’EN ai vu. -- I saw all the museums. -- I saw them all. --I saw some.

“On est allés visiter le château de Cheverny.” Agreement of Past Participle with ON ON means ONE or WE and THEY, indicating a general statement. The rule states that ON is generally conjugated as IL – 3rd person singular. In the passé composé, the past participle remains masculine and singular.

• On a parlé français dans ce magasin. – They spoke French in that store. Remember that, in everyday French, with verbs with ÊTRE and reflexive verbs, the past participle agrees in gender and number – it may become feminine and/or plural.

• On est allés au cinéma. (talking about 2 men going to the movies) -- We went to the movies.

• On s’est assises au cinéma. (talking about 2 women sitting down at the movies) -- We sat down at the movies.

Finicky agreements And last, there are these super finicky points. When you are speaking - rather than writing - is really doesn't make much difference. The good news is that even French native speakers don't always follow these rules. So, no worries, your French is goooood :-)

1. There is no agreement with impersonal verbs: il y a eu, il a fallu, il a fait+temps (chaud, beau…)

o Les pluies qu’il y a eu. -- The rains there were. o Les efforts qu’il a fallu pour bien parler français. -- The necessary

efforts in order to speak French well. 2. There is no agreement when fait is followed by an infinitive verb.

o Nous nous sommes fait couper les cheveux. o La maison ? On l’a fait repeindre l’année dernière.

3. When a verb is followed by another infinitive verb, there is no agreement unless it is the second verb that carries the direct object.

• o Les peintures que j’ai vu faire. J’ai vu-faire … les peintures. o Les livres que j’ai laissé lire. J’ai laissé-lire ... les livres. o Les sculpteurs que j’ai vus sculpter le marbre. J’ai vu les sculpteurs

… sculpter le marbre. o Les copains que j’ai laissés manger l’apéro. J’ai laissé les copains …

manger l’apéro.
