Aroma protection guaranteed

It takes sophisticated technical solutions to protect food products, espe-cially those that remain active in their packaging. In this domain, our pro-prietary WICOVALVE® has become the widely adopted standard.

A wide variety of foods, including coffee and raw sauerkraut, generate gases inside their packaging. This is where our WICOVALVE® one-way valve, developed in-house by Wipf, literally provides relief. It lets the gases es-cape but prevents oxygen to get into the packaging. This functionality makes a decis-ive contribution to the optimized protection of the product.

Our proprietary WICOVALVE® aroma-protec-tion/pressure-relief was originally designed for coffee. During the past years, this valve

technology has been refined and modified for many new applications. It allows fresh foods such as doughs, soy products, cheeses, mushrooms or microwavable meals to be marketed in consumer-friendly packaging yet in full compliance with the requirements of modern logistics.

WICOVALVE® pressure-relief valves are available with different material combinations, opening pressure levels, flow rates, and filters to meet the needs of the application.

CoffeePackaged roasted coffee needs to be protected against the loss of aroma as well as exposure to oxygen, water vapour, and light. These protective functions are handled by our specially designed POLIVEL® and POLIALUVEL® barrier layers. On the other hand, the CO2 generated by freshly roasted coffee beans must be allowed to escape from the packaging without letting oxygen or water vapour enter. This function is handled by the WICOVALVE®.

Sauerkraut and other raw productsUnless thermally treated, raw sauerkraut will ferment in the packaging. The gases generated in this process are reliably evacuated with the WICOVALVE®. Stand-up pouches are ideal for raw sauerkraut and other raw foods. The valve is sealed in the upper zone of the packaging. It is important to minimize the exposure of the valve to liquids. With a special note, consu-mers should be cautioned not to store the pouch horizontally. In bulk packages, for ex-ample sauerkraut buckets, the WICOVALVE® is sealed into the cover film.

Leavened doughFresh leavened dough remains active inside the packaging. The yeast fungi contained in the dough generate gases and thus cause the dough to rise. Depending on the storage temperature, the increase in volume can be considerable. The WICOVALVE® that was developed explicitly for this application also allows the gases to escape, safeguarding the integrity of the packaging.

The steamer for the microwave ovenMore and more restaurants, caterers, and private households are discovering the ad-vantages of the patented Dream Steam System as a pressure cooker for the microwave oven. It allows complete meals in portion trays or pouches to be prepared quickly and conven-iently. The WICOVALVE® integrated in the system assures freshness protection. It also regulates the pressure that builds up while the food is being microwaved, keeping the steam overpressure constant until the food is ready for serving. After microwaving, the valve remains open to prevent a vacuum in the tray or pouch as the food cools.

Pasteurization without counterpressurePasteurization prolongs the shelf of life of pre-cooked foods. A pressure equalization method is needed to assure that the pasteurization process can take place directly in the pouch or tray without any counterpressure. Our special valve type makes a key contribution to simplified handling in the convenience foods sector.

Dry pourablesA certain amount of air is usually trapped after products are packaged in large size bags. The air results in a loss of stability and potential slippage of the pouches stacked on the pallet. The use of our WICOVALVE® vent valves en-hances on-pallet stability and optimizes the storability of the pouches.

The WICOVALVE® W606E was developed especially for the coffee industry and can be composted pursuant to industrial standard EN 13432 in combination with biodegradable laminates.

How the valves are integrated

Depending on the packaging process, de-gassing valves are applied with thermal or ultrasonic sealing. To assure optimized valve functionality, the WICOVALVE® overpressure valve is sealed on the inside of the laminate. The valve body will adhere to the sealing me-dium of the film, either on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or Ecovio® (bio compos-table material). The choice of valve has also an impact on the design of the production equipment. All deflection rollers as well as the forming shoulder and the filling tube must be

recessed at the valve position to prevent the valves from being torn off. Additionally, the parallelism of the seal tooling must be adjust-able on the machine. To guarantee optimized degassing, we recommend punching a hole or a cross slot in the film.

WICOVALVE® valves are applied with heat or ultrasonic sealing. Automatic sealing takes place during the packaging process on form, fill, and seal equipment. However, we also supply prefabricated stand-up pouches and gusset bags with integrated valves.

The sealant and the membrane prevent air from entering the packaging.

The membrane opens as soon as the product generates internal pressure. Depending on the valve type and the packaging content, this may occur at very low overpressure levels. In coffee pouches, for example, the membrane will lift off the seal flange at a pressure level of 3.5 ± 1.5 mbar, allowing the gas to vent.

The membrane remains open until the overpressure has dropped to below 0.5 mbar. Then, the sealant blocks oxygen ingress (back diffusion) into the packaging, making it airtight again.
