The second publication is of quite a different character as it concentrates on one visual medium: the overhead projector. It is the professed aim of the editor of these "workshop"-papers to show the use, the scope, and the limits of the overhead projector. B. This specific task can be considered fulfilled if one looks at the range of the subjects discussed: - The methodological aspect - The role of the teacher - Test series for commercially produced transparencies - Hints and designs for the production of transparencies - Testing through the use of the overhead projector - The overhead projector as stimulus for speech events C. As far as its impact is concerned one can say that this publication does fill a gap. The more so as this medium can by now be found in nearly every school in the Federal Republic of Germany. The book does not aspire to start off a fierce discussion of the theoretical aspects of this medium's use. It simply states: Teacher, if you want to know what to do with the overhead projector, I will show you. - It cannot be denied that a teacher or student formerly ignorant of the qualities of this medium will be reasonably well informed on the uses of the overhead projector in traditional language teaching after reading these papers. But ... one asks: is this all that can be done with this medium? Is the continuity and support of traditional teacher-centred classroom teaching all this medium can do? I would therefore like to sub- scribe to Helm von Faber's view of the deficiencies still prevalent in this field: future research should be cen- tered around means to make the overhead projector a learning device and not only a teaching device, to show how it can be adapted to groups on different levels of proficiency.
